  1. Yeah that's probably true but this just looks much more muted and filmic than I remember the show ever looking.
  2. Wow, that is really fascinating. That first shot on the highway is so reminiscent of David Lynch, but specifically of his film work after Twin Peaks. It doesn't look like a shot that would have ever been in the show. It's weird seeing those two sensibilities collide.
  3. Julian Barnes

I was in London recently and saw a ton of ads for a new film based on The Sense of An Ending, which I have never seen advertised at all in the US and had no idea existed. Anyone seen it or heard anything positive?
  4. It seems like a big failure that we don't have a nice clean word for "rectangular prism." EDIT: Actually I just looked this up and I guess we do, it's "cuboid," but that's dorky as shit and clearly unacceptable.
  5. I'll check it out, thanks! The comparison is interesting as I think the continuity and character is a huge part of what makes Review so good. The fact that all of these insane reviews actually stack onto Forrest's increasingly fucked life is what gives the series so much horrible (and funny) gravity, I think.
  6. Idle Thumbs Streams

Oh man that's a great idea. It's been many years since my days of Halo mastery so I'm sure my skills have atrophied considerably but that'd be fun.
  7. Idle Weekend April 24, 2017: Cull Your Frustums How much do game players know? Do they know things? Let's find out! We wade into a minor kerfuffle online about how much devs like to disclose about tech, and then, we dip into some serious territory in the weekend correspondence and projects. Please note! There is some fairly heavy talk about sexual assault and rape in movies and TV in this episode. Discussed: Horizon Zero Dawn, Mass Effect: Andromeda, The Dialogue Box podcast, Idle Thumbs, Containers, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands, Eminem, Roman Polanski, Crimes and Misdemeanors, Chapelle's Show, Remember the Night, The Thing, The Fall, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Say Anything, Notting Hill, Blade Runner, Billions, Colony, Occupied Listen on the Episode Page Listen on Soundcloud Listen in iTunes
  8. I've only watched the second episode ("Cry Wilderness") but thought it was just as funny as any of the old episodes I've seen. I've seen a bunch old MST3K, mainly back when it was on TV, but definitely not anywhere close to all of it, so I'm not as well-versed as many. This one felt more rapid fire in terms of jokes than the ones I remember; not sure how accurate that is. I thought it worked well, enough, as MST jokes are always pretty hit-or-miss, so having more darts to throw at the wall seems reasonable. I was never all that crazy about the skits, but I liked them even less here. Having people whose faces I already know from things that aren't MST itself felt distracting for reasons I can't really articulate; I don't know that that's a fair criticism. I think that since the skits already delight in their kitschiness and artificiality, having an element of professional gloss in the form of "real" actors created a disconnect that was jarring for me.
  9. Hey folks! As the site continues to branch out in terms of what our podcasts cover, I realized we're long overdue for a subforum discussing film and television. But really, that's a thin justification. The "Movie/TV recommendations" thread reached its 10th anniversary last year, so really we probably should have had a place for film and TV for a while now. Enjoy it! Post stuff there!
  10. New forum: Movies & Television!

    New split-off threads:
  11. Idle Thumbs: A Patreon

Okay we added a catch-up tier for postcards!
  12. Idle Thumbs: A Patreon

I would like to figure out a way to allow people to jump on, without also making existing patrons feel like their early adoption had no point. We'll think it over!
  13. Post your face!

Goddamn, that's a hell of a suit. Looking great! Congratulations!
  14. Fake Games

To address something that seemed to go largely unchallenged in this thread, I want to note that a private company making its own decisions about its own service is not a regulated market. It can change any of those decisions at any time. You might approve of it and think it's necessary, but it's kind of the opposite of a regulated market. Valve isn't publicly accountable in any way. It's just a pure capitalistic enterprise. Their motivations and intentions are their own, and the outcome of them are not regulated in any way, at least not with respect to the specific types of choices being discussed in this thread. You can feel however you like about the right of any company to operate that way, obviously.
  15. Idle Thumbs 305: Z to the Triple-T All three Thumbs are still playing the new Zelda, and still having just as much of a blast. And some readers have a variety of Trespasser reactions to follow up Nick's recent playthrough. Plus: Jake gets confused about his own life. There's a thread about it!
  17. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011)

As a piece of film I prefer the 2011 adaptation (unsurprisingly, as it's one of my favorite movies). However, I think Alec Guinness is a significantly better Smiley. Oldman as Smiley is almost a cipher working as the engine at the heart of the dismal machinery of the film; I think it works extremely well. Guinness as Smiley, on the other hand, is actually playing the character of George Smiley, elder spymaster, and he's fantastic.
  18. New people: Read this, say hi.

    Welcome, all!
  19. Idle Thumbs 304: The Game Shack It's a week of ambition, both realized and failed. All three hosts continue their journeys through The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but Nick Breckon goes the extra mile by slogging through the entirety of the oft-maligned Trespasser: The Lost World. There, he discovers moments of brilliance years ahead of their time, and also a lot of broken dinosaur animations. @RubixsQube An invaluable resource I had when building a bar was the cocktail apps developed by Martin Doudoroff: http://mixologytech.com/ The great thing about them is they allow you to check off ingredients you have in your bar, and you can then see what drinks you can make with what you currently have on hand, what drinks you can make with what you have plus one other ingredient, and what drinks you can make with what you have plus two ingredients. It will also tell you, based on what you currently have, what the next most useful ingredient you don't already have would be, in terms of letting you make new drinks. Each ingredient has a selection of examples of specific brands of that ingredient (whether it's a spirit, a liqueur, a non-alcoholic ingredient, whatever) as well, and all the apps developed by that guy will sync their inventory across each app, so if you add a particular ingredient to one, the others will recognize it. I first got Beachbum Berry's Total Tiki, and then added Modern Classic Cocktails, Martin's Index of Cocktails, and Shaken and Stirred. Although it's the last one I've acquired, I'd probably recommend Shaken and Stirred as a good first choice, as it's the most "generic" of all—unless there's a specific cocktail angle you're interested in, such as tiki.
  23. Other podcasts

It's so good. God what an amazing creation. It feels totally at odds with what is expected from podcasts. That includes Serial, which has surprises in it but fundamentally remains about the thing it claims to be about entirely. S-Town feels novelistic; it tells a story that is what it needs to be as it unfolds, rather than sort of delivering a promised product. Ultimately it's utterly non-gimmicky; it's a beautifully told and reported portrait of a life.
  24. Real talk, I brought it up a lot during development.
  25. Idle Weekend March 30, 2017: My Gaming Renaissance Danielle would like to apologize for the tardiness of this episode. But! There is a lot of good stuff here, as we discuss games that have made us fall in love with the format all over again. It’s an all-gaming Idle Weekend!
