  1. This is kind of a silly claim, considering the three hosts of Idle Thumbs all loved it and are roughly half that age.
  2. Microsoft Surface

Having a sleek keyboard built in is definitely pretty attractive to me. I recently bought an iPad so I'm not going to out and buy a Surface, but the biggest thing I wish the iPad had was a good low-profile keyboard, because the thing I end up using the tablet for most often is writing and taking notes without the need for a full computer. All the existing iPad solutions are either pretty bulky or seen as fairly low-quality. I think there really is a midpoint between laptop and tablet that would be well-served by what the Surface is trying to do--allowing it to be essentially a laptop when you need it to be, but not locking yourself into that form factor and weight.
  3. Yeah Decameron is what popped to mind for me as well but it didn't actually sound like what Sean was describing so I didn't say anything. I wasn't familiar with the Decalogue.
  4. I think in this case it's less an issue of equipment and more of software. I need to get better compression settings going.

Is anyone else calling for this thread to be locked? What is your evidence that it may actually destroy the community? If, as you say, people simply walked away from it before, that seems like a pretty benign end. The rest of the people posting in it now seem fine with it remaining.
  6. I think there's a distinction between the reading in aggregate affecting you, and the details of a particular plot twist affecting you. I think the point is that while the revelation itself is principally of great impact to Tony, the way in which he came to understand it, and the fallout of it, and the retrospective understanding of how it has informed his relationships with others--those are the things that affect the reader.
  7. This is an incredibly concisely-put observation that I wasn't able to communicate very well.
  8. New people: Read this, say hi.

    Welcome all!
  9. Thanks, I've been working on it.
  10. Idle Thumbs pre-recorded live stream thing

Sorry this began as such a disaster! I think it turned out pretty well after that garbage was fixed.
  11. I (obviously) don't know anything about this, but it looks like you're misinterpreting one part of his post. He didn't claim Riot's servers were hosted in Mountain View. He said the company operated a server center in Mountain View which is the largest on the West Coast. That doesn't imply that Riot uses that particular center.

If people don't like this thread, they should just not come in to it and post in it. There's really no reason to lock it, so it's going to stick around as long as people want to post in it.
  13. Goodreads

I actually didn't even know the site had recommendations--I've never used it for that purpose.
  14. Goodreads

I just use it to track what I've read, what I own and plan to read, and what I'd like to own and read.
  15. Movie/TV recommendations

I haven't seen the film but what is different about the Asian guy as opposed to the black guy?
  16. Movie/TV recommendations

Yessss. The Apartment is one of my favorite movies, and Billy Wilder one of my favorite directors.
  17. Hell yeah. I haven't played this game but this episode might give me the prod I needed to do so.
  18. Maximillian Payne: Part Trois

Yeah. This is common in Rockstar games generally, and I always find it really weird for that reason. The Housers are so into (what they perceive as) elevating game fiction and worlds, and sometimes they succeed, but they often have these incredibly bizarrely arbitrary gamey collectathon things also just crammed in there. Is that only available in MP?
  19. Idle IPv6

I believe you're thinking of the switchover that occurred in broadcast, not cable. If you already had cable that changeover didn't affect you.
  20. Maximillian Payne: Part Trois

This is pretty much an exact list of the issues I have with the game. Compared to my recent gaming habits, it feels sort of odd to be playing a game that is absolutely nothing but running around and shooting, which makes it sort of odd that the mechanics the game does have are often so spotty. By volume, the majority of my frustrations with the game are related to the stream of cutscenes the game is constantly tossing up at every opportunity. In addition to the clear problems you call out (bad camera positioning in "last stand," the weapon resetting), I also simply found it really weakened the experience for me for the game so frequently to toss me a softball just so I could knock it out of the park by clicking the mouse. The game is often fairly difficult when you're doing the most routine thing (just shooting a bunch of guys), but when you're doing the most totally outrageous and ostensibly difficult thing, the game is at its easiest because it occurs either entirely in a cutscene or is so primed by a cutscene that the player's involvement is token.
  21. Movie/TV recommendations

I got my totally unnecessary UK deluxe Blu-ray edition of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy in the mail today. It has a film cell. It's pretty sweet, and totally unnecessary.
  22. Movie/TV recommendations

The Apartment by Billy Wilder was made three years later and is another of my favorite films--on some days it is my favorite film. It is similarly ahead of its time and masterfully constructed.
  23. Hitman: Absolution

    "Agent 47"
  24. Hitman: Absolution

I don't see how that's giving anyone any credit. I also think people are too quick to assume it's always calculating marketers. I'm sure that's part of it, but it's not as if the creative side of the AAA game industry at large has a broad record of nuanced, thoughtful fiction.
  25. Hitman: Absolution

Yeah, it's less akin to Tarantino so much as it is the shitty three-degrees-removed version of what a game developer shallowly thinks is cool about Tarantino. Alternatively, it is akin to what Zack Snyder legitimately thinks is cool about Zack Snyder.
