Idle Thumbs 116: Ragnar Calls it Quits
Jake replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Yeah, and that is rad. The game of thrones board game audience is very different from the game of thrones Xbox or even steam audience (in that it is almost guaranteed to be people who have German style board game-heavy game nights and the like), so weird shit is allowed to rule supreme in that space. Is the GoT game a Fantasy Flight game? That is a company I keep feeling like I should dislike or be untrustworthy of just because of their size and flashiness, but they make a ton of pretty hardcore, high quality stuff. -

Idle Thumbs 112: The Cast Of Us The Last Of Us cast, a formidable task, is one we'll complete, completely unasked! When we bash guys' heads in with a brick, do we stop aghast, our inner demons unmasked? A game full of bombast, with much to lambaste -- but it looks world class -- will we hold fast, or will we give it a pass? Also discussed: Capsule, Letterpress. I went on one family road trip to Colorado and the southwest and my mind was blown when we stopped at a Stuckey's. Man. Pecan chocolates were bought.

Most of the places in Hit the Road are larger than life versions of roadside tourist traps Purcell and Stemmle would get dragged to as kids on family road trips, or imagined versions of them (the bungee jumping stuff for instance). My friends started planning a Hit the Road road trip at one point, right after high school, but sat on our asses and played video games instead.

Idle Thumbs 108: A Premium Price A voice cries out in Russian; you don't understand it but that's okay. A guard runs past you, trips a motion detector and lights your way. You lose two wingmen but save the day. That's the price you pay. Things Discussed: Gunpoint, Transistor, Metro: Last Light, Sid Meier's Ace Patrol, Spin Doctor, Prey Listen on the Episode Page Listen in iTunes Subscribe to the RSS Feed

If The Last Of Us is actually about the repetitive banality of life in the post-apocalyptic world actively, and not accidentally, then that's cool. Or, if that's the experience you're getting out if it, that's cool too. That's not the feeling it conveys to me from the outside, though. BUT I just bought it and am going to start a playthrough this weekend.

I don't think that is true. I think "less is more" can actually apply here and be important. I don't think the emotional impact of a journey story comes literally from the amount of time spent experiencing that story, rather it's the amount of experiences you amass along the journey which make it feel resonant. I think you want PARTS of the story to make you experience literally every footstep taken to get from one place to another, but that's not what you want ALL THE TIME... unless the game is actually a narrativeless simulation (like Day Z). But The Last Of Us is an interactive narrative experience, undeniably, and stories don't work the way you're describing. At least not exclusively. "Boards management game" - solid

Your choice to do this to your posts is one of the most simultaneously frustrating/depressing/saddening/annoying things I've ever experienced on this board, btw. Please reconsider.
-
Please don't do that (yet), for the sake of the forum. Deleting first posts from threads especially is a dangerous/gross thing.
-
Just talked to Doug -- deleting your account will turn your posts into posts created by a unregistered, unlinked guest users named Kroms, not connected to any particular user account. It is incredibly frustrating from a maintenance/organization OCD standpoint because it means there are a bunch of posts and threads not tied to a user, but it is supported by the forum. It's also way better than you manually deleting 500 posts. ("I've never deleted a non-spam user" says Doug, so this is just an educated guess as to how it will work.) Alternatively your account can be suspended, which keeps it linked up as a user, but it is officially a dead/archived account which can't be logged into or modified. (I/we'd much rather suspend the account than delete it, so it doesn't splatter the disconnected remnants all over the database, for what it's worth.)

We haven't completed it. Discussion based on 30-50% complete playthroughs, with very few specifics referenced.

Doors seem pretty simple: Open doors for whoever you want, but don't make a big deal out of it and don't act miffed if you're not thanked, because holy crap nobody owes you for holding a door open unasked-for. You're just opening a door.

Idle Thumbs 111: Cruisin' for a Word that Rhymes With Cruisin'
Jake replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
1) It's probably because we're used to it being Chris/Sean/Jake since that has been the core post-Kickstarter lineup, but we're jerks for it. 2) Congrats Nick. -
Idle Thumbs 106: Imagine the Man This week on Idle Thumbs we talk about the video games we've been playing and laugh at each other, but our A/B testing has shown that those things don't really bring in the key demos we're looking for, so we're probably going to just replace this episode with a picture of a woman in a thong, drop a sleazy tagline on it, and claim for some reason that it's rated AO. That should do the trick. Games Discussed: Tammany Hall, Thomas Was Alone, Dota 2, Spooky Sound Effects Record, Wartune, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Dark Souls & Demon's Souls, Sleeping Dogs Listen on the Episode Page Listen in iTunes Subscribe to the RSS Feed

Oh man that demo song! Yes!!! My friend had a keyboard with this demo but you could replace the main instrument with a voice sample... It was the best/most annoying thing. -

The realization that that is easy to do in Logic was one of the great realizations of our age. -
Why do I want one of these? Man. Oculus Rift might be the center of my tech-shit-lust self hatred.

Idle Thumbs 110: The Thing That You Needed To Say We're not quite at the point where E3 keynotes have exit polls, so you'll have to settle for this episode of a podcast instead. We play pundit following the heated battle that was Sony and Microsoft keynote day at E3, Jake accidentally pays attention to Nintendo for a second and can't look away, and Nick runs a lot of dudes over in his car. Things Discussed: Super Smash Bros for Wii U, Super Mario 3D World, State of Decay, Stickets Listen on the Episode Page Listen in iTunes Subscribe to the RSS Feed -

Walking Dead was deliberately avoided by me because I didn't want to go into the obligatory deep dive of untangling "is it or isn't it"/"what is transmedia," which seemed beside the point of the conversation. The Dash Rendar synergy is definitely transmedia! The Matrix sequels and how "you're only getting part of the story if you see the films!!" so you have to play the game and watch the Animatrix DVD to see it all was a pretty intense transmedia shitstorm. Seems like Skylanders is an example of 80s TV/toy tie-in turned into a transmedia thing. Anyway barf. Maek gaem.
