  1. Dota Today 10: Dunkin' Bro-nuts

    DOTA (rearrange!) TODA(Y)
  2. Idle Thumbs 113: Shoot That Pizza When we're two hundred years dead and buried, we hope the kids of our kids' kids' kids are still bringing you this podcast out of some strange never-ending sense of family destiny. In the meantime, we bring you our experiences playing Rogue Legacy (which is basically that, except killing guys in castles and not podcasting), share our excitement for the new Civ V expansion, and talk about the cold war and the moon. Like we do. Things Discussed: Rogue Legacy, Civilization V: Brave New World, Hearts of Iron: East vs. West, The Last of Us, Moonbase Commander Listen on the Episode Page Listen in iTunes Subscribe to the RSS Feed
  3. We don't really know where listeners came from but last week had an 18-20% bump.
  4. Nick and Chris are housemates in the same SF apartment!
  5. Far Cry, Crysis, Crysis 2 all had this, right? (Except in Far Cry it was mutants not aliens?)
  6. Happy Dishonored Wednesday! Idle Thumbs 130: Fundamentally dangerous to the notion of culture If our dark cyber-future lets you experience life through the eyes of a chicken, then so be it. If our dark cyber-future lets a chicken experience life through the eyes of man, has science gone too far? This episode best experienced with at least one sense augmented through technology, and one sense disabled to compensate. With special guest Zack Johnson, co-creator of the Kingdom of Loathing and host of the Video Games Hot Dog podcast. Games Discussed: Oculus Rift, CastAR, Chicken Walk, Delver, Eldritch, Super Smash Bros (series), Candybox 2, Neptune's Pride Listen on the Episode Page Listen in iTunes Subscribe to the RSS Feed
  7. Anyone Remember?

Anyone remember when this thread was a useful resource?
  8. New people: Read this, say hi.

Wow so many new people. Welcome new people! Hi!
  9. I found it measurably more difficult to set up than xsplit... in that nothing actually worked. No game, no camera, no indication that streaming was working. With xsplit my experience has been: you just drag a bunch of images and games and cameras in and it just goes. Maybe I was missing something fundamental with OBS.
  10. Idle Thumbs 142: Unmasking the Brain Burglar The door to the plane opens; the crowd is deafening. Chris Remo descends the stairs onto the tarmac, the smell of Steam Dev Days still on his skin, the wave of the future shaping his every step. "What did you see?" someone asks. He continues past. "What did they tell you? What will happen to all of us?" another asks, as he pushes them aside, his gaze set. "Where are you going? What do you know!" Only as the door to his limousine swings to close does a boy see the Steam Machine and controller prototype under Chris' arm. Things Discussed: SteamOS, Steam Controller, Candy Crush Saga, The Banner Saga, Candy Land, The Great Game, DayZ, Broken Age, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 (Wii) Listen on the Episode Page Listen in iTunes Subscribe to the RSS Feed
  11. Amateur Game Making Night

It's also very easy to move up to a sub forum at basically a moments notice, but more difficult to scale down from a rarely used one with success.
  12. Amateur Game Making Night

My advice is start with a dedicated single thread to gauge interest and if it bursts at the seams move to a sub forum. This is awesome.
  13. Getting into the industry?

    That is awesome.
  14. Getting into the industry?

The existence of the Internet means you don't have to start out in real life proximity to people. Get one of the most commonly talked about free engines out there and make something basic using the tropes of a genre you love. (Eg: moving a guy around like one does in a 2d platformer, or a 3d third person game, or an fps, or a vehicle sim, or an RTS unit) and keep building out. Or do something else. Just make stuff and post about it. It's actually kind of surprising there isn't a "let's all make stupid shit in unity or game maker" thread on here. Maybe everyone's too busy.
  15. It was that joystiq ran that logo recently with the new trailer, which confused me. Chris and Sean had both seen that logo back when it was announced.
  16. No what you said seems more like real life than what I said.
  17. I read that as on a future Nintendo smart device or other future Nintendo initiative that's still in R&D. He specifically says that saying "Nintendo is putting Mario on the smartphone" would be a misinterpretation of his words. Nintendo also issued a denial of that interpretation. Maybe I'm misreading as well. It kind of sounds like Iwata basically said "fine sure, smartphones, yeah we have our top men looking into it. We've got em working in shifts," while furiously writing "ohhh fuck smartphones" on his notepad under the table.
  18. Sean said imagine Nintendo just making handhelds and I admittedly immediately disregarded it. They make Nintendo a ton of money but I think any prestige Nintendo has(which is important) comes from their games coming out of the worlds living room TV sets, regardless of where the money actually comes from. You're right that handhelds are a huge thing. I don't think Nintendo's future is in a successful smartphone though, and that's where all the pundits are telling them to go.
  19. I know the Wii Fit sold well, but I think it was emblematic of cashing in on the fad-like parts of the Wii as opposed to finding something sustainable. It's telling that the Wii Fitness Trainer is a novelty in the Wii U Smash Bros, like Mr Game & Watch.
  20. Idle Thumbs 141: "I was too busy losing it." We're joined by Will Smith of Tested.com for a manic look at the aftermath of the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show, the heat and motion detecting revenge of Robot News, and other things which when taken in aggregate generally represent the future. We then marvel at this week, which seems to feature nothing but amazing independent games crashing into one another. Things Discussed: CES 2013, Oculus Rift: Crystal Cove, Samurai Gunn, Nidhogg, Risk of Rain, Far Cry 2, Euro Truck Simulator 2 Listen on the Episode Page Listen in iTunes Subscribe to the RSS Feed
  21. Idle Thumbs 140: The Customer's Always An Asshole A message from the future arrives, delivered by hand: Idle Thumbs 140 -- a real bionic back massage of a cast -- is here, with reactions to the CES Steam Machine announcements, failed pursuit of the Nuclear Throne, and more terrible happenings in the world of DayZ. With special guest Chris Remo. Games Discussed: SteamOS, Nuclear Throne, Flywrench, DayZ Listen on the Episode Page Listen in iTunes Subscribe to the RSS Feed
  22. I think it has power even if you want to pursue it yourself. They're both incredibly good at getting something up and running incredibly quickly, which can let you know what direction you should go next, whether that's polishing the game in the tools you're using, moving on to another prototype, taking your game concept to another toolset, or using it as a pitch to find others to collaborate with.
