Idle Thumbs 221: Meet the Kerfluffles
Jake replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Yeah I don't perceive any malice on the part of a robot that decides to destroy all humans, but I could see a computer intelligence, under some bizarre and bleak circumstance, deciding that it could be more efficient at its task if it optimized human workers out of the equation, via unpleasant but entirely unconsidered methods, morally speaking. -
Idle Thumbs 220: Life Finds a Way This week we guess at how life might begin, and are shown many ways it might end. Here, in the middle, is a podcast. Spaff evolves while showing off Gang Beasts at Evo, Chris weighs the value of a new life versus a long and celebrated one after some startling developments in his Fallout Shelter, and Jake worries about what's living inside his car's brakes. Games Discussed: The Flame in the Flood, Gang Beasts, Circa Infinity, Fallout Shelter, AlphaBear, VVVVVV, You Have To Win The Game, The Talos Principle Listen on the Episode Page Listen on Soundcloud Listen in iTunes Subscribe to the RSS Feed

Good pull! I was so bad at that game, but loved it. And had forgotten about it until now. Thanks!

Idle Thumbs 219: Idiots Laughing After years away, we found ourselves this week trapped in surreal spaces filled with otherworldly lights and sounds, dodging indistinct figures that triggered sensory responses unlike any offered in the normal world. We wore virtual reality headsets, and we went to E3. Games Discussed: Superhot, Cuphead, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, SUPERHYPERCUBE, Super Mario Maker, NYTimes Crossword, Spelunky Listen on the Episode Page Listen on Soundcloud Listen in iTunes Subscribe to the RSS Feed

Oh man here is the model of CRT display I used to have, found on some old Steam community post:
-
I had a 1920x1200 widescreen Sony/SGI CRT for years and I loved it. It was an amazing display. It's color accuracy finally degraded to the point that it was unusable for any actual design or video work so I gave it to someone on Craigslist but that was a fun display to have. It was also HUGE and caused every desk I owned to eventually sag, no matter how nice or thick the desk.

Idle Thumbs 218: Yanis' Last Move Unlike some, we live in a bountiful place. A place where the stars stretch out before you, full of life and endless, a place where soccer is played by not just Mario but glowey demons and even cars, a place where every gun is unique even if that is the last thing you want. We live there so enjoy all of it. Games Discussed: Super Mario Strikers, Dota Strikers, Splatoon, Team Fortress 2, Into The Stars, No Man's Sky Listen on the Episode Page Listen on Soundcloud Listen in iTunes Subscribe to the RSS Feed

Well that's disappointing! I have been enjoying the early chambers as they've reminded me a lot of the final few chambers in Portal 1, but with the gels. They've walked the line of being obtuse but it so far has felt like its my fault for not understanding something. It's a bummer to hear it might slip over the edge later though.

That makes me feel a little better about things, but it's not remotely raised in the first hour or so of the game so it just comes across as "bad," instead. I'm glad they tried any of the humor content, though. Had it been silent and devoid of voice it would have felt like that beautiful but tone deaf Portal fan film that was just leaping around and sentry action sequences, kind of missing the point.

Oh man I didn't know it was so deliberate!

Comic con footage is pretty good/clever: https://twitter.com/starwars/status/619684902762516480

Yeah there was no incredulity, more polite curiosity.

This also came up in the Jake Solomon episode of Tone Control. He said Sid Meier would ask his designers "who's having fun?" and that is just so succinct and devastating to me, I love it.

True Detective Weekly 2: Night Finds You After the second episode of True Detective Season 2, we're bought in. Despite some lingering misgivings from the season premiere, the show has firmly staked its claim in pulpy conspiratorial Southern California noir fiction, and the character relationships are starting to take form. Join us as we discuss "Night Finds You" and speculate about what's to come. (Some cliffhanger, huh?) Idle Thumbs 213: Build the Nublar Terraforming is complete. The fences are placed. Administrative staff is happy, buzzing away in their newly-zoned facility. This is it. This one will be perfect. But no, work halts: An error message. The face on your screen is not one you recognize. It's definitely not Dr. Wright. "Ah ahh ahh." You dismiss it. "Ah ahh ahh. Ah ahh ahh." Your clicks are drowned out by a barrage of dick picks and photos of cartoon cat butts. The wording was from Sony but they settled on "console debut on PS4," which is wording I like because it's accurate. The blog post was written weeks ago and we didn't think to change that wording there, sorry about that. -
What I want: - less passive admonishment from the game if I choose to use systems other than stealth No other complaints. I'm pretty psyched for this.

Sean I hope you have visited woofmaker.com in the past. It seems perfect for someone who is sick of "woof" or who loves "woof."

Sorry if I came across like I was blaming Sarah Palmer for not being aware and reporting Leland early or something like that. I agree with your assessment (and lostinthemovies post which followed it). I hadn't read this thread when recording this weeks episode but we talked about Sarah Palmer some more, in what is a hopefully more nuanced and on point way than any inadvertent half-bemused blamey notes in the FWWM episode. -
I heard the home alone reference and respected it in my brain but I think it was so potent that it blocked any possible vocalization from happening. I doubt Ira Glass is saying "woof" as a callback to Buzz's girlfriend.
