I was really bummed out that the plot centered around a dad giving a main character complete certainty that if they succeed in their mission it will be worth it for the cause. Seems to run directly against the whole hope/faith message the film kept on about. There's no need for hope or faith or belief when you have certainty.

Idle Thumbs 293: Warmest Greetings Chris buys a cup that he thinks looks like a piece of human anatomy, and against all odds, it leads to an unexpected and completely impromptu look back at some of our favorite games of the year. Discussed: Hitman, Super Hypercube, Planet Coaster, Dark Souls, Dark Souls 2, Super Mario Run, Super Nintendo World, Catacombs of Solaris Listen on the Episode Page Listen on Soundcloud Listen in iTunes

Idle Thumbs 288: Pizza Tonight! Feeling like the world's driving you up a wall? Life's out of control, galloping over a cliff? Everything you thought you could achieve is just on the other side of the glass, out of reach? Fortunately we have video games, where all your wishes are granted. Join us as we scale the walls of Titanfall 2, rein things in and take control of Battlefield 1, and discover that no matter what you try in Hitman, maybe the game IS rigged and you just can't win. Discussed: Titanfall 2, Halo, New Super Mario Bros., Battlefield 1, Owlboy, Abuse, Trine, Hitman (2016) Listen on the Episode Page Listen on Soundcloud Listen in iTunes

Idle Thumbs 92: The Mind-Tech Contingency We come up for air from the fantastic SimCity beta to find ourselves in another place, lost in a world where firing a gun in a video game is a complex and specific act, an unfortunate world where there is cyberpunk crap everywhere. With special guest Steve "Hot Scoops" Gaynor. Games Discussed: Receiver, SimCity, SimCity: The City Simulator, Escape from the Haunted Ship, Hundreds Listen on the Episode Page Listen in iTunes Subscribe to the RSS Feed

I didn't participate in this wizard jam, and I didn't complete our game from wizard jam 3 either... BUT knowing that I could fudge the deadline a little bit if I was absolutely screwed for time was what kept me going as long as I did! I just bit off way more than I could chew on that game I think that knowledge - that if at the end you're still a tiny bit over your head, it'll be okay and you can still submit - is a positive that way out-shines any potential negative concerns, e.g. that someone will somehow exploit the looseness of the deadline rule. (I agree that it's a little cheesy to post stub entries for nonexistent games to the jam page though! Just finish late and then ask for permission to be added!)

Idle Weekend November 14, 2016: Even the Advocates We recorded this weekend's episode before the election, so there is little talk of presidential politics and despair this time around. But we do talk about games that we really love, and want to advocate for. It's a healing salve for things that ail us on this dreary week. Discussed: Even the Ocean, Grey Goo, Ruse, Presumed Innocent, Mass Effect 2, Westworld, Witcher3, Skyrim, Stardew Valley, Chrono Trigger, Dance Central, World of Warcraft, Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective, Overwatch Listen on the Episode Page Listen on Soundcloud Listen in iTunes

Idle Thumbs 290: The Sad Story of a Modern Idiot
Jake posted a topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Idle Thumbs 290: The Sad Story of a Modern Idiot Join us on a grand circle tour of massive-scale architecture, both real and imagined. In Planet Coaster we step through the mouth of Dot Gobbler himself, crossing the threshold into Thumbsland, the park that never closes, the park whose rides never end (because they are incomplete). Did you hear that? It's the sound of San Francisco, California, without a bus or train in sight. Sounds like someone needs to fire up Cities in Motion and get to work. The last leg of our journey will take us along the rim of the Grand Canyon, care of Google and Alphabet Incorporated. Please remain standing so we don't have to stream in the canyon floor at high detail. Also, Nick played Dark Souls. Happy Thanksgiving! Discussed: Planet Coaster, Cities in Motion, Dark Souls, Google Earth VR Listen on the Episode Page Listen on Soundcloud Listen in iTunes -

Idle Thumbs 289: Old Fruit and Dirty Water This week you are beset by waking nightmares and cannot continue. Giant insects pour from the sky and from the walls, hungry for blood, or maybe bones. A funny man screams out again and again for meat, for any meal, and you know he will not die because your voice says so; he is now in a state of infinite hunger, living on old fruit and dirty water. A popup window appears above your head, which reads "Everything is okay, none of it is real. You are part of an elaborate simulation built to entertain Steve Gaynor." You dismiss the popup and sleep soundly. Discussed: Dishonored 2, Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair, Hitman (2016), Transport Fever, MiniMetro, Titanfall 2 Listen on the Episode Page Listen on Soundcloud Listen in iTunes

Man I almost majorly backpedaled that on air when it left my mouth, or asked that it be edited but let it sit to see what the response was. I was trying to say "not stereotypical alpha male types," and was not thinking in terms of the modern shitty MRA/PUA context. That phrase has existed since before the 21st century, and has always been a bummer of a term but definitely was not always as weaponozed as it is now. Anyway, I did a poor job of explaining any context of that remark on air (because I also bailed out mid-thought on some of this stuff), but that word was on my mind because I think Owlboy itself might accept it as a valid label. I don't like some of the things Owlboy seems to have to say about the internalization of "being a man," in that it seems to very strongly acknowledge an "alpha/beta male" split and tells its story through that lens. Maybe that's an unforgiving read on a story that could be said to be about tolerance of everyone and about misfits of different walks finding friendship together, but I think it's telling a story about more specific things than that, and those things might not be all that healthy in their initial assumptions (even if they are well intentioned).

Our equipment is faulty somewhere along the line, and the thought of fixing it is apparently paralyzingly to us because we have known about it for weeks but have done nothing. We'll look into it. Sorry.
