I think I explained myself badly. On the whole I am a pirating bastard. I own have tons of software and tons of MP3s that I did not pay for. That said, the ones that I really get a lot out of, I generally go and spend money on when I can afford it. They, in my mind, deserved it. That's a pretty ridiculous half-assed view of things yes, but why not? Seems that's a far better way to go about it than the people who claim they will do that someday, but are just deluding themselves.

When LucasFilm's Games division were forbidden from making Star Wars games
Jake replied to jp-30's topic in Video Gaming
It's actually the opposite of surprising. And it's sad. -
Being honest with myself, I really don't give a crap if someone downloads and plays a game that they would absolutely never have bought otherwise. If you can seriously honestly do that... whatever. Lying to yourself to rationalize ("I wouldn't have paid for Doom 3 anyway") is not allowed, that's not what I'm talking about. However, if you honestly want to download something you would have never considered paying money for just to see what on earth people were talking about when they mentioned it... do it! However, if you find you've become attached to said pirated game, you'd better go buy it. This attitude has worked pretty reliably for me and audio CD's. Over the years I've thrown out or stopped playing quite a few MP3's I downloaded, after realizing I didn't like them or give a shit about them, but I've also purchased about 3x more CD's in the past five years than I used to (not entirely because of piracy, but largely due to it).

Also notice the Advent Rising site's domain name is "adventtrilogy.com"

I think Majesco is aiming to diversify a little bit. They are apparently well funded by the owners which are an independently wealthy family (?), and then on top of that they very deliberately make a million budget games that apparently fly off the shelves at Wal-Mart, giving them the capital to fund big budget titles like BloodRayne. They're currently working on BloodRayne 2 as well as a decently interesting looking game called Advent Rising... And they make those GBA video cart games. They're clearly no Microsoft but that might not be a bad thing. The way I see it is... Microsoft: not willing to fund Psychonauts. Majesco: willing to fund Psychoonauts.

Jedi Outcast wasn't a critical darling, but it didn't do too poorly in the magazines. It also sold incredibly well. LucasArts was pleased as punch with the sales of the PC versions. Console ones, not so sure.

Stupid fact: Jedi Outcast's dialogue was written by Sam & Max's Mike Stemmle.

According to the always-suspect-but-I-read-it-anyway Aint it cool news, Shaun of the Dead has an American release date of September 17th, and will also be showing on Thursday July 22 at the San Diego Comic Con. Why is this interesting to you? Because Spaced was an extremely excellent series, and because... look at this site... watch the trailers.
-
Would be nice if a US network (eg comedy central) would pick up spaced and run through seasons 1 and 2 over the course of a regular TV season. If Shaun is at all a hit here I suspect it will happen. I think Bravo has the rights and ran it through once over a weekend sometime but I can't imagine them playing it again without a decent bit of incentive.

For the record, Marek and I discovered that Penny Arcade beat us to the penis-nailing bit by a decent while, and it was probably bubbling around in my brain because of that, though I didn't remember it. In other news, Stranger looks good. It needs to not get cancelled.

He just wants you to stop yelling.

Might as well point out that the US trailer for Shaun is now online: quicktime high res win media high res quicktime crap res win media crap res Its kind of like the UK trailer in fact, but its got the American trailer guy, and gives away more of the jokes. ¬ Probably more convincing though to the American audience which generally has no idea what the movie's about and hasnt had Spaff harass them into seeing Spaced beforehand.

I've only received one as well. I wouldn't be surprised if they slowed down the number of invites too, as a lot of people seem to have Gmail now.

I hope instead what we get is more games with Sonic snowboarding down city streets bonking cars out of the way with Green Day knockoff music playing in the background.

I feel guilty for only consciously wanting a DS more now that theres a re-design... I mean granted the other one was a bit embarassing looking but tis basically the same system just with more sexy angles. Why does the new semi-wanting-of-one make me all guilty and retarded feeling?

Keep asking, keep trying to draw the answer you want out of him Troll!

He's neither puppet nor CG, he's a guy in a suit.

I said this elsewhere but... MI1 came out in 90, that was 14 years ago now (fear!), so if he was, say, 33 now, that would put him at 19 when MI1 came out, which would be a bit odd.

Saying there's nothing there is largely false. It's definitely okay and probably advised to be wary of the movie, but the humorous use of "Don't Panic," and the celestial 42 at the end of the trailer at least show that they have some grasp of what the movie should be... or at least some grasp of how to market it. Will the script, performances, and set decor be good? That is something you can't tell until the movie comes out, but at least they're trying to send signals now that they know what's going on. The teaser says, pretty effectively, "Yes, this is the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, here are some key references that you remember from the books, it isn't transformed into a retarded Bruckheimer action drama and it hasn't been re-adapted into a live action Titan A.E." I would have less doubts if, instead of the stylized thumb logo* they had made the stars form into the smiling, tongue-sticking-out planet logo, but whatever. You don't want these things to be too reassuring, right? Okay maybe you do, whatever. I am getting the same feelings about the H2G2 teaser that I got about the initial extremely cheezy / borderline camp Pirates of the Caribbean teaser with the waves that kept obliterating the titles, and the skeleton foot, and that can't be a bad sign. * that isn't to say I'm opposed to thumb logos as a rule, obviously. i'm just talking about in terms of fan-assurance, the trailer did what little it did very right, except for that thumb.

At least the kids like the prequels... Of course, even with my rose-tinted nostalgia Star Wars glasses, I suspect that as the current generation of kids who like the prequels get older, they'll realize that the older ones are in fact better all around... sort of how it seems on average, kids my age liked Return of the Jedi a lot (due to C-3p0 and R2 mysteriously having wily goofball mode switched to overload, and the goofy ewoks), until they got a bit older and realized how much more was going on in terms of originality and ... quality... in the first two.

I'm sorry to say that yours is feared around the globe. I don't like it one bit.

During the tech boom when people had money and weren't afraid that people might not understand or accept large format ads in online media, the online "NetShow" version of You Don't Know Jack would cut to commercial break between rounds, showing full screen tv-style ads made in Flash or Director. The ads were really short and they only played one or two per break so it was actually tolerable unlike real TV ads. If you somehow actually found yourself interested in the ad, you could hit the spacebar and a little sound (possibly of a cash register) would play, and after you quit the game it would take you to that sponsor's site -- a much-delayed "click" of the ad. I don't know what most people thought of this, but I liked it a lot as an online ad format, even though they were ads for things like "whats a new show on TBS" which I didn't care about one bit. --- While I didn't much like the Noid game, I did enjoy the Cool Spot 7up NES (or was it SNES?) game alright. Those Virgin Interactive 2D sidescrollers around that time sure had nice animation and artwork. They were also kind of fun (sort of).

Christmas seems like a bad time for a game like Psychonauts... BG&E and Armed & Dangerous both came out as possibly holiday games and were promptly ignored by all the moms and grandmas who were buying Christmas gifts for their kids. It seems like Christmas is the time for huge franchise games that parents will recognize, while a few months afterwords, kids will be out looking for something new and possibly picking it out themselves. That's when you spring giant tea drinking robots, government conspiracies, pic mechanics, and psychic summer camps on them.

EA did recently pick up the new Oddworld game, however. A point towards that theory if you want to be all Stretch Armstrong about it. That said, I don't know anyone whos gut instinct tells them "EA and Psychonauts is a probable match," without some serious rationalizing. Well, except Yufster's apparently.
