  1. For Janey E's sake I hope Cooper comes "back" at least an episode before the end of the season. I used to want that just so I could see Cooper again, but now I feel like Janey E will be robbed of closure if Cooper comes back (and Dougie goes away for good) with only minutes to spare before the credits. I care enoug about the Jones family at this point that I'd be happy to marinate in them having to deal with the fallout of a fully awakened Dale Cooper.

  3. Yeah. Instead the warden got played I guess.
  4. At the time I'd thought Gordon was requesting he get a call solely to trace it, but that didn't end up happening.
  5. "If there is a quote, someone in the Internet will at one point attribute it to Mark Twain." - Mark Twain
  6. That was was more or less what I thought at first when watching the scene, what I pictured was happening, but I didn't have this concrete a throughline. I haven't seen this specific point (the news show) raise much confusion or speculation, but "time is messed up and it's part of a big reveal that we can catch early if we try," is definitely happening with a subset of TP fans. Some fans really want Twin Peaks S3's timeline to be more ornate and out of order than it is. I think if Twin Peaks ever does something to majorly screw with time or whose subjective reality we're in, we'll know about it. The story is being told in a weird way and we're getting it on very slow drip, but it continues to be told in normal time and space for the most part. Like when people first first saw the license plate on Dougie's car there was a brief obsession with it having an "03" sticker and how it meant TWO TIMELINES and Dougie was in 2003 or an alternate 2003 or whatever else. Turns out Nevada plates' number sticker is the month and the color is the year, so he just needs to renew his registration in March. Or when Hastings dates the photo of Major Briggs people spun out for a minute about how he seemed to write the date as the 20th when the Twin Peaks Sheriff Dept storyline is happening on the 29th.... It turns out that actor just has bad handwriting. If you pause and zoom in he wrote "29," just very weirdly. I dont think alternate realities or timelines or realizing you were seeing a warped version of the world through one character's eyes are odd the table - they're common in Lynch's work. That may be the story we're being told, but I don't think it's going to be told to us the way it is on Westworld or something like that, with a huge plot-driven rug pull at the end that "fans should have seen coming." But, you know, who knows!
  7. I had initially thought Candie may have been describing what Mr Jackpots did the day he was in the casino, which the other guy may have seen as baffling or nonsensical. The scene didn't play out that way, but the way she was gesturing around at stuff looked like she was telling a specific story to me, not something general and nonsensical. Agreed! Related: Jim Belushi is doing great work in this show.
  8. Yes this! I understand and appreciate the Richard Horne scene in and of itself - it's a fantastic piece of cinema for all the reasons everyone here has said, and the motivations of the characters and the story it told within the scene is easy to follow as has also been said - but as to why this scene, this character, this plot thread is there to begin with, it's impossible to definitively know right now because of how the show is structured and because we haven't reached the end of the story. I understand the impulse to say "I don't care, it's so great that the big picture doesn't matter," or to chastise me and my attitude for not having enough faith that the complete picture of this "18 hour movie" will have a home for this scene, but I can't push these questions aside. That feels very similar to "just switch off your brain and enjoy it." A great scene is a great scene, but ultimately its success in isolation will be judged against what it's doing inside the show as a whole. To ignore "why am I watching this" is to ignore the big picture of what's unfolding. I understand that the way this particular story was constructed, it unfolds in a way that makes the purpose and context of most things unknowable until way down the line. I don't think that is BAD (duh) but it is undeniably unique, and I think it's completely worth recording my thought process and my reactions in real time as I experience them, even if they are critical or unclear in the moment. This week this thread has been really bad about jumping down people's throats because they had a reaction to Twin Peaks that's different from the one you had. It's a bad look! You can't revel in how different and daring the show is on one hand, and then blast someone because you think their interpretation or experience is somehow wrong!
  9. The idea that the first two seasons of Mad Men aren't very good is astounding to me. I think that show is great from start to end. Also for as well made and watchable and fun as Breaking Bad is, it's totally schlock. The opening storylines involve having to chemically dissolve a criminal in a bathtub, which crashes through the floor and splats. It's delicious fun to watch but also it is what it is.
  10. I agree on all points. I don't want him to be bad, and I don't think it fits with my understanding of who Albert is. I was most interested in it as something to put on the table to bust up the "it's definitely Diane" assumptions a little bit.
  11. Important If True 21: The Real Monkeys There are more questions, problems, and conundrums out there than can possibly be addressed in a lifetime, but we're doing our part, starting with these: Why did someone hide a room full of monkeys out in the desert, and what are the monkeys inside the room hiding from us? Would you impress your friends with a third thumb, or just sit at home wishing for a fourth one? Is that bee really lashing out because it smells your fear, or is it just put off you didn't consider its feelings? 12. Just saw someone propose that the weak link may not be Diane but might be Albert! Albert is actually the holder of a ton of information and is in a position to manipulate things. He could be lying to Gordon about sending things to Jeffries. He could be lying about Diane's text. He could be going on dates with the medical examiner to try and get info from or tamper with the Briggs investigation (or get Dougie's ring). Maybe Albert is the fake Jeffries? That is wild and unfounded speculation on my part (based on a single tweet linked below) and I hope it isn't true but he is definitely a character with a lot of defacto unquestioned agency in the story right now. https://mobile.twitter.com/anvilone/status/887555197009920000
  13. I have tasked an AI with observing this thread. Let me check on it... oh... oh no
  14. There's bewilderment because we are human beings, an emotional species that finds comfort in expectation and is confused or anxious when they are defied. It's cool to be a bastion of rationality and say "David Lynch said its structure is unusual," and end the story there, but that 1) is a more unique reaction than you may think it is (see above, re: what we are) and 2) I think that attitude has the potential to limit discussion rather than enhance it. I'm all for saying that one shouldn't draw conclusions until the end, especially given the unique-for-television structure of this show, but I think it's perfectly within bounds to feel shocked and upset by the imagery and behavior in Richard Horne's scenes even without knowing "what they mean" in the larger picture of the show. Regardless of whether he gets comeuppance, he did these things, the show chose to present them in a specific way, and we watched them. That's going to cause a reaction!
  15. Twin Peaks Rewatch 41: The Return, Part 7 Hawk and Sheriff Truman add new evidence to Laura Palmer's case file for the first time in 25 years, Major Briggs is identified as the body in the Buckhorn morgue, Doc Hayward caught some trout, and everyone—inside the show and out—starts really coming to grips with the reality that the Cooper the're watching is not the Cooper they knew. After a couple weeks of slow burn, this week's episode of Twin Peaks is packed, and we're happy to get to discuss it with you. If you have a question for us or thoughts to share on the new season of Twin Peaks, write us at twinpeaks@idlethumbs.net. Looking for a place to discuss the season with fellow viewers? We recommend the Twin Peaks Rewatch forum. Listen on the Episode Page Listen on Soundcloud Listen in iTunes -- Let's talk about part 7 before we record the podcast tomorrow! I'm still taking notes and gathering thoughts but a couple things jumped out, after the discussions we were having in the Part 6 episode and thread: The room key made it home in a non-dreamlike way (or maybe something's still weird, as evidenced by the mysterious hum)! The pages were totally from Laura's diary! Everyone was right It was Briggs' body but maybe he's been gone for 25 years? Wonder if he spent some more time in an old timely aviator costume right before he died So yeah... Approximately infinite plot/evidence/mystery questions were answered and raised this week. It was crazy and felt very different from last week's. What did you all think? What's on your mind?
  16. My understanding throughout this season is that the body we saw popping out of an electric outlet in the beginning of Season Three is the body we saw go into the lodge at the end of Season Two, and a totally different body (belonging to bad coop/mr c) is what walked out of the lodge at the end of Season Two. But I guess that's just totally an assumption.
  17. Twin Peaks Rewatch 40: The Return, Part 6 A long-awaited face makes a tantalizing appearance in the shape of Laura Dern, much to the internet's delight. Meanwhile, the swirling Dougie-related conspiracies seem to intertwine ever further, even as new threads continue to appear and bodies pile up. We aren't entirely sure what to make of it all, but we give it a shot. Listen on the Episode Page Listen on Soundcloud Listen in iTunes
  18. Fuck Actually someone's going to come in here and say it if I don't: I'm pretty sure "hoist" was already the past tense and it's been corrupted over time. So, 'oist.
  19. Ah that's interesting, I never really knew the specifics to that detail. So much old British pronunciation and ettiquite is such a Star-Bellied Sneecth situation.
  20. Pretty sure that got dropped in America because of some French influence. Americans pronounce "pasta" in a more Italian way and get mocked by Brits for it despite them saying it incorrectly. We're not trying to be snooty in weird isolated ways, we just had a different mix of immigrants than you in our formative years.
  21. I think IMDB got pre-populated by fans as speculation before the new season aired and then someone (correctly) wiped it right before the premiere and people have been filling it in as the show airs. So any pre-premiere IMDB info shouldn't be trusted.
  22. Ranking the Harry Potter Series

No matter how you personally choose to order the seven Harry Potter books and eight films, beneath that list is an infinitely deep well, at the bottom of which you can find Fantastic Beasts and the Cursed Child. I bet both of those things would have been way better if Rowling had wanted to write them as novels. :/
  23. Idle Thumbs 309: "Terrible" Jason Voorhees The game begins and this time, you are him. You look out through the holes in your mask, through the trees, and see the teens scattering across the camp. "They fear you," you think to yourself, gripping your iconic machete tighter, your extra senses already picking up their noise, their movements, their smell. "You are the only hunter in these woods and they fear you." A branch snaps behind you, and you whirl around. A small goblin-like man in a hat and overalls looks at you, bobbing slightly, his face expressionless. The goblin man removes his hat, his gaze never leaving yours, and throws it at your face. You try to scream but there is just blinding light, and then nothing. 24. Ah oh well. That's much simpler and better.
  25. I noticed this too. It looks great for what could be a simple piece of video noise.
