Mein Thumbcraft—IdleT Dedicated Minecraft Server
tabacco replied to MrHoatzin's topic in Multiplayer Networking
I made the change, but minecraft.net is down so I can't log in to test the effect. If someone makes it in before I do, let me know how it feels now. -

The new, larger, Congrats Nick sign is complete. Patters, jennoa and I had some trouble with the N, if you're interested in taking a stab. Hard to get the diagonal to look good in a 6x21 space. -

I don't have rolling backups, sorry. That's on my to-do list at some point, because I'd like to be able to provide downloads of (hourly?) snapshots for the curious. The lesson in-game as in real life is: -

I do! You can use ns1.dthosting.org and ns2.dthosting.org - I'll add the zones now. Also, in the interests of simplicity, I've made all the existing domains CNAMEs to idlemc.com. By the way, not that it matters, but minecraft.idlethumbs.net should now work, for those who kept mistyping it that way -

We have Hey0, and then as plugins within it, BucketFix, GriefAlert, and SaveReloadPlugin SaveReloadPlugin, by the way, appears to be absolutely essential. Also, be aware that the server process requires a pretty heavy amount of memory, a minimum of 1GB. -

FYI, there appears to be a bug in the new server version that causes it to only write the game state to disk until it runs out of free memory. So, because we lost about 12 hours worth of progress in a server restart, enjoy the new new Idle Thumbs world. Now with autosave plugin. -

THE SERVER RESET IS NIGH! Behold the new Idle Thumbs Server! (I have a backup of the last state of the previous world, if anyone wants it) -

Woo! Installed. -

The update is installed, but Hey0 isn't working with it yet, so many commands won't be available until it is. -

I may have exploded the house near the mausoleum that Erwin and I rebuilt with excessive vigor, damaging the adjacent arena and part of the skyway. Sorry about that. If it makes you feel better, the force of the explosion crashed the client -
Couple of notes... We got the fire/lava/water problem in that one house near thumbhenge under control. Also, the lava in the projector in the cinema set the projection booth on fire, so Erwin and I rebuilt it out of stone. Beware of lava near wood, even if they're not directly touching.

FYI: Courtesy of donations, I'm going to be moving up to a bigger instance size, which hopefully should improve server performance a little in the form of more RAM and CPU share. The server will be down for ~15 minutes while it migrates to a new host machine.
-
Also, thanks to all who've donated! I may add some sort of 'thank you' section to the donation page in recognition of your sacrifice
-
Hmm, this all sounds like extra incentive to not run it on the same box. If you put it somewhere I can rsync the files from, I'm happy to host the final result though.
-
Courtesy of Kingzjester, we have a very friendly donation page up and running! http://minecraft.idlethumbs.com - All contributions go toward helping to pay for the server. For reference, it currently costs me $30/month, but ideally I'd like ot be able to move up a tier for more CPU/RAM for $40, and donations could help make that happen

It may be a little slow, I'm compiling Python 2.7 to try and get that mapping tool working. Edit: It's probably not going to happen. The prerequisite list is a little nuts, and I don't have time to build everything it needs right now.
-
Correction: the server lives. ysbreker wasn't able to save the config for the server, so if you see a setting that needs to be changed, let me know. Also let me know if the performance seems awful or anything.
-
Nearly there. By the way, the new server will be running the old world, until we decide whether to reset or not.
-
Sorry all, I won't have this up and running by tonight. Real life calls
-
Yeah, I have Python and I can build the rest of the prereqs. I'll give it a shot when I get home Sunday (out of town for a friend's wedding right now)
-
Post-upgrade, I notice that a) the server is no longer complaining about its memory allowance on startup and performance in-game seems better. Thoughts?
-
I'm going to add more memory to the server, which should let me double the amount of memory I can dedicate to the server process (the probable cause of slowness, since it's never going over 12% CPU utilization). Let me know if that makes any difference. Also: For the curious, I picked Atlanta as a reasonably central DC for both US and EU people.

Thompson and I spent a few hours digging and generally running around, and it seems to work fine with two people. Be interesting to see how it holds up with 4 or 6.
