Mein Thumbcraft—IdleT Dedicated Minecraft Server

By the way, for those who haven't seen it yet, the new map renderer is pretty awesome, especially if you switch to the surface view. http://idlemc.com:8000 -

There are definitely a few quirks with the permissions system, but I'm hoping they're not too bad for now, because there aren't any newer versions to install yet. As soon as there's an Essentials update I'll install it. Sorry for the inconvenience in the meantime. -

On second thought, in the interest of getting this going, I've gone ahead and re-rolled and brought up the 1.8 server. If you update your clients now, you should be able to connect. If one or two people could connect in the near future for just a couple of minutes and double check that all the permissions and stuff are working properly, that would be super helpful Edit: whoops, permissions are broken. I'm working on it. Feel free to login and look around in the meantime though. Edit again: Fixed! all should be good now. Forgot to rename the permissions directory. -
Hey, I'm moving the conversation about the server back over to the multiplayer networking forum: http://www.idlethumbs.net/forums/showthread.php?t=7495&page=58

FYI, I'm playing with with getting the server up and running on 1.8 in parallel with the currently-running 1.7 server. At this point I think I've got it pretty happily up and running. I'm sure there's still some weirdness with Craftbukkit based on their commit activity, but at this point I'm comfortable saying we should pick a time for the grand reboot. I think they're always more fun when we can get lots of people on for the first few hours at least. Is there a time in the evening in the US or morning in Europe that would work well for people? -
I had planned to update, but I'm waiting for Craftbukkit to promote a stable build. Though if people are no longer interested, I'd prefer to know now before I lay out the effort and money.
-
Not from me, but if that's what people want, I'm fine with it. I like building stuff, and that's 500% more fun and relaxing with mobs off.
-
Well, assuming people jump back on idlemc.com for 1.8 and 1.9, that suits our world reset schedule anyway.
-
I'm pretty happy to see that the Bukkit team is submitting pre-release bug reports on 1.8 - those guys are pretty on the ball as far as testing goes.

I moved the Notch discussion to the more general Minecraft thread in Gaming, FYI. -
Are partying and working mutually exclusive now? I believe they traditionally happen at different times of the day.

Two things: 1. 1.7.3 isn't stable, there's still a pretty bad crash bug with Pistons. Try causing the server to load the chunk where Thompson was building and you'll find that out (don't actually do this). 2. Pushing bugfixes quickly is great. What's not great is pushing updates right before you, say, get on a plane from Sweden to San Francisco. On-the-fly updates are great, but you have to be at least a little disciplined about it. As an engineer on a popular cloud service, I can tell you the number one rule is don't push code when nobody's around to support it if something breaks. And Mojang aren't great about that.
-
I don't really have any concerns over the rate at which he puts out new stuff. Honestly, most games go way longer between content updates. What I do wish is that he'd put more effort into QA before releases. I know Mojang has the cash to make at least a small QA team happen, and honestly all of the stuff that goes into this game seems like it could be unit tested pretty thoroughly in an automated way.

In other news... playing with a dynmap update that uses textures instead of solid colors, and supports biome coloring. All the tiles are re-rendering now, but it looks pretty nice so far. -

No, it's dying because nobody uses it anymore. I didn't mind chipping in a big chunk of the server cost for a server people actually use, but paying to have a server sitting idle for days at a time is pretty pointless. -

It didn't look like there was much to see that hasn't already been revealed by Notch on Twitter. I don't think that guy can keep a secret -

Watched Notch do a demo of 1.8 today at PAX and got a little hands-on time. It's pretty cool. NPC villages look nice -

Unfortunately, the thing Minecraft is bound by is memory, which is the most valuable resource in a VPS environment. 1GB is basically the minimum amount of memory you can allocate to the JVM and still run a server. $60 gets me a VPS with 1.5GB, which is just enough for the JVM plus linux itself (usually). -

Someone just Paypal'd me $60, so that's +1 month. I don't want to name names if he wants to be anonymous, but thanks! -

The people who complain about 'cheating' never actually log on to the server to play, so it's hard for me to take those complaints seriously. My goal in running the server is to a) have people actually use it and have those people enjoy themselves. Those who actually use the server enjoy building stuff and aren't interested in hunting for materials. Even so, I've just paid my linode invoice for the month, and this will be the last month for the server. For those who don't know, I pay $60/month out of pocket to keep it running and, with one exception, I haven't received any donations in months. As I said before, between the technical headaches of keeping the game running and the actual cost, it just isn't worth it to support a server that few play on but many complain about. -

Finished the giant pyramid I was building, and also built a nice subway/El line out to a viewing platform for it -

Okay, well, your position is reset to spawn. Login again if you feel like it, I guess. On what? Another re-roll? People are barely playing on this one. To be honest, I'm starting to think it might be time to retire the server. I think most people are pretty much done with the game at this point, and it costs me a surprising amount of both money and effort to keep things running when most times it's just me on there anyway. -

Okay, looks like the server's going to break whenever Thompson820 logs in or anyone goes near whatever he was working on Thompson, would you like me to remove your data file on the server so you're returned to spawn? It'll also clear your inventory
