Academically I tend to find the most fulfillment in mathematics and physics, and I hope to work more philosophy reading into my life in the future.

Hobby wise I mostly do games of all sorts, primarily video games and a lot of board games. I kind of run the gamut in terms of video game enjoyment, but I definitely have a preference for smaller "indie" games like Kentucky Route Zero and Transistor. As for board games I tend to play a lot of Euros, but also do a fair amount of dueling games like Summoner Wars and Netrunner.

  1. Idle Thumbs Streams

Are the idle thumbs twitch emotes not working for anyone else? They aren't appearing in the emote menu for me and when I type the commands nothing happens. I'm subscribed to the Idle Thumbs channel with Twitch Prime, which seems like it should work the same as a normal subscription as far as channel specific emotes are concerned.
  2. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

Been listening to a lot of electroswing while I do homework recently. The album <|°_°|> by Caravan Palace has a lot of good stuff, notably Lone Digger which is just gold. I would also recommend checking out Parov Stelar and Caro Emerald if you're interested in electroswing.
  3. Dota 2 - Summer 2016 Roster Shuffles

The wording of the official post implies that PPD chose to transition out of the player role, so maybe he just had enough of the stress associated with being captain of a world class professional team. Doesn't matter how much talent you theoretically have if you're too emotionally/mentally drained to make use of it.
  4. Pepe Politics

I never really associated Pepe with white supremacy personally, though I'm sure it was used on /pol/, /b/ and the less savory parts of Reddit frequently. However, to Problem Machine's point, I think that the recent reporting of Pepe as a white supremacist icon may very well shift it to being a white supremacist icon, since a lot of (probably most) people's first interaction with Pepe will be with discussion of the meme through that lens.
  5. The audio-visual illusion that Chris was talking about near the beginning of the episode is known as the McGurk Effect. It occurs when you hear a spoken sound that is synced up with the mouth motions of another, similar sound (like 'bah' vs 'fah') causing your brain to interpret the sound you hear as the sound you would expect the mouth to be making. You can even close your eyes so that you hear the sound in isolation, and then open them to the video again and the sound will appear to change, even though it's actually just your brain changing what you "hear" based on what you see. The demonstration of the effect begins 30 seconds in. An inexplicable close of up the guy eating cotton candy occurs at 25 seconds.
  6. Other podcasts

Actually Purge has set up an RSS feed for the Multicast now with downloads for the episodes in .mp3 format, including the first episode. I had to add it manually on BeyondPod as I couldn't find it with the in-app podcast search. Here's the link to the RSS feed: https://purgegamers.true.io/g/podcasts/ad781abe-0fc2-4d46-b993-557152ae259d/
  7. Dota 2 - Winter Major - Shanghai for the Dota Guy

The last match between EG and Liquid was super close the whole time. There were some pretty nice plays in there, but also some avoidable team wipes on both sides at various points. Looking forward to EG vs VG for sure.
  8. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I read the first two. Couldn't read anymore. It's like walking into a weird parallel universe that I do not understand and never want to.
  9. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

Just had a super big hit of nostalgia for that game. I remember playing it with a joystick my dad had gotten for his flight sims. Increasing engine power with the thrust switch on the joystick was so satisfying. And managing boosts and engine heating. And nailing hard to land short cuts.
  10. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate

The DLC is accessed in different ways depending on what type it is. Most DLC quests are found under the event quest category from the guildmarm or the questarixes, unless they are challenge quests in which case they are found by speaking to the arena clerk or the clerk in the assembly hall. The three part quests are found by talking to the housekeeper and selecting one. The associated quest giver will then appear in the gathering hall. All of the DLC equipment is tied to an event quest, and won't be available to view at the forge until you do the associated quest and get the unique item drop from that quest. This applies to both hunter and palicoe DLC equipment. The bonus palicoes can be hired by going to the palicoe board and going to the "Hire bonus palicoes" option. All of the other DLC is guild card backgrounds and titles, or the bonus caravan points which are automatically applied. Hopefully this answered your question about DLC? It was pretty general so I figured I'd cover everything, so my apologies if I covered something you already knew. Also, relating to being broke I must say it feels like MH4U has much higher equipment costs than MHTri or MH3U did. I've found it necessary to sell extra monster parts, moreso than in the previous iteration. One of my friends I play with found that a good way to make money if you have a bunch of caravan points from doing expeditions is to farm Might Seeds using the Wycoon. A stack of 99 Might Seeds sells for almost 14K zenny. Expeditions are also a good way to make money on their own, because if you find a bunch of relics with okay but not great stats you can get upwards of 20K zenny on a good run.
  11. I have an interesting relationship with Warcraft lore. I've never played WoW beyond level 10 and played through Warcraft 3 once; my main interaction with the Warcraft universe is through Hearthstone and lately HotS, yet I spent a significant portion of time last winter break reading through a good chunk of the lore on the WoW wikia. Conversely despite my strange fascination with the lore of the Warcraft universe I can't stand Warhammer's lore, despite the nearly identical themes of generic fantasy races fighting and also there's corruption and muscle guys and massive pauldrons. Maybe Hearthstone has given me just enough sympathy for the characters that I am willing to put up with it all? I find that in general I appreciate the presence of lore in a game without actively engaging with it. Knowing that it's there does make the world feel more complete even if I don't personally know most of it.
  12. Self-imposed challenge modes

I played through Dishonored's main campaign on the hardest difficulty without killing anyone or being seen, purchasing no powers and using blink only when the game required me to in a few particular platforming sections. The moment I completed the game and all four relevant achievements appeared as unlocked at the same time was one of my most satisfying moments with any game. While I did get personal satisfaction at basically playing the game without all the cool shit in the game, it did lead to a lot of save-scumming behavior and sliiiiight exploitation of mechanics. It also gave me an appreciation of the tendency for unconscious assassins to fall forward only when they're on the edge of a rooftop.
  13. New people: Read this, say hi.

Well hullo there! Been listening to the podcast for a few months now and been lurking on the forums sans account for a few less months than that. Haven't really done a forum thing so I figured I'd give it a shot here. Looking forward to having quality discussions on games and games culture with all of you dashing and intelligent people!
