  1. Comprised of Gamergaters and was planned out on Kotaku in Action, and somehow fasttracked into SXSW. I think the festival is excited at the prospect of profiting off the "debate" and controversy in some sort of way that makes sense if you think about how tech people adhere to the idea of real meritocracy even though it's far from reality.

  2. The only thing with Plugging One's Shit is that it doesn't seem to cover just the general work people do that doesn't have any public coverage - I post up my art a lot on Twitter and I don't post it here because it's not linked in any specific way. It's just drawings.

  3. The phenomenon male gaze was specifically meant to talk about straight men's objectification of women but I think the term could use the specificity. I would REALLY like to not pretend that this is a term that is just about a sexualized viewership and not about the power dynamics of looking. Lesbians and queer women do not look at women the same way straight men do. As a bisexual woman, I feel incredibly alienated by things that are meant specifically to appeal to how straight men look at women, as also a woman who is potentially looked at by men.

  4. I fell into the Radiotopia hole finally - 99% Invisible, Gastropod and The Theory of Everything are TOP PICKS. Also I finally got Pocketcasts web app so I can listen easily at work. I listen to SO many more podcasts now that I can just queue them up in an easy player.

  5. I will definitely update the thread with the projects myself and Tzufit are working on (though I am looking forward to a much needed break.) !

However, I do chafe at any of the podcasts listed being referred to as SJW podcasts, even jokingly. We're all feminists (of some degree) and I think all of us like being referred to as that. We're women actively participating in social justice/feminist work and I'd love if that was maintained when talking about us (NYMG, Isometric, etc.)

Isometric: I have largely given up on it other than the episodes where Wu hasn't been around because yes, she's annoying and authoritative. However, listen to the episodes from recently where they've had guests on, a huge step up in quality and actually good discussions.

  6. Heading to Chicago again this weekend for Valorcon and I'm staying at the appropriately lux Palmer House because I liked how the lobby bar looked.

Also been dealing with random anxiety due to my cat pouncing on me in bed when I try to go to bed - insomnia after kicking it for 15 years is not fun in the slightest.

  7. I genuinely couldn't believe his Zelda chat. I think he was just spoiling for a fight.

No way! Is there any specific reason? I was going to say that's a shame (and it is for listeners) but it might be exactly what you want.

My cohost wanted to recede from gaming entirely and so I decided to sunset the show vs. looking for someone to fill-in. It's a little sad but it's alright, I think. :)

  8. I had NO idea that he was almost 40, jesus! Excited to give this a listen.

Also I don't know if Thumbs forum people have heard the news, but I suspect they will tomorrow if you listen to the new episode of Justice Points but after 2.5 years, Tzufit and I are stopping the show in December, permanently. Thank you everyone on the Idle Thumbs forums for being super supportive and whatnot.

  9. Is anyone dressing up? I never go anywhere, and I'm not really on candy duty but I thought it might be fun to wear a costume in some way. My choices are someone from Steven Universe (thinking Greg or Steven) or maybe Neptune from We Know the Devil.

  10. It's incredibly unclear as the comic feels like it's addressing mainstream media but doesn't communicate that effectively enough. If they snipped the words about "feminist at the core" and "doesn't challenge the status-quo" and left it at "here's some other types of relationships that don't get enough play, if you have privilege along with a non-monogamous relationship, maybe acknowledge that!" it would be a much stronger statement. I get really edgy about identity being used as a stand-in for "radical politics."

  11. Yeah, I didn't get the sense that Nick was comfy/happy of liking a game that sexualized Quiet in that way but this week kinda nailed that feeling to the wall.

RE: Tarantino and non-overtly sexual fetishes or pursuits in auteurs

You absolutely can fetishize something on a sexual level without it being what we think of as "sexual", that's what a lot of fetishes are. Feet, for instance. This is actually how a lot of people fly their shit under the radar but there's still a very "I know it when I see it" aspect to it you can't ignore.

  12. Yeah, I watched most of the proceedings and it was very broadly about media and the internet (several speakers were talking about media images from TV and general technology use) and not about games at all. There was even a few moments of Zoe talking about anonymity as still being really crucial to protecting marginalized people as well. It makes sense because games are really not the only place where women get abuse online. Sure, it might have some of the best organization right now, but it's like how people pretend Gamergate started misogyny online when it's not even close to being the truth. The internet has merely made misogyny that already existed in our society more accessible, weaponized and convenient to enact.

  13. Bisexual week is always fun for me, lightly laid over the whole "but I'm visibly in a het relationship and what does that mean, especially because I'm a woman" feelings. On top of the bedrock of "why do I keep saying bisexual when pansexual is what people consider to be the 'better' ID" nonsense.

But still, it was nice to see so many other bisexual people on Twitter this week. :)

  14. Tolerating Tarantino: The Uma Thurman Story

I am glad that Tarantino was brought up in context of "auteurs with obvious fetishes" because it's so transparent on many levels when a particular visionary laces his creations with his own interests in women's bodies. It's hard  to put your finger on how you know, but you know it when you see it. It's a certain loving camera angle or repetitive theme to poses or clothing or body parts. It's seriously laughable at times. A friend of mine were talking about some of the more illogical parts of Quiet's outfit, like her tiny bikini being hiked up half-way on her boobs and I remembered that that's literally how they dress up gravure models in Japan.

  15. Yeah, my college didn't support on-campus frat houses either, all frats and sororities had meetings on-campus via the campus center. While there were definitely house parties, the fact that the organization had to operate under the auspices of the campus in a professional way helped a lot to keep them service/networking orgs and not sleazy.
