Yeah, I am still extremely sour about that whole business.

I try to live a life of more radical politics with less ideological purity and more just that I wish more liberal feminists cared about some of the same stuff I did, but I tend to get thrown off a cliff by being called toxic/extremist. I still dislike Whedon a lot.

This is all anecdotal but there's actually very few people I know in any circles, feminist, social justice or otherwise who actually cheer on harassment of ANYONE, versus talking about how contextually, people care about Joss far more than people with no resources and use Twitter as a means to socialize and survive off their work. Jaden Smith also got hassled off Twitter recently as well and no one is talking about it because, well, you know why. Are there absolutely callous-as-fuck people in social justice circles? Absolutely! People are jerks EVERYWHERE though and for some reason, I saw a lot of people saying that there was this widespread "not a big deal" feelings happening that everyone had to sit up and take time out of their day to refute because no, totally, it absolutely was happening a lot. I don't agree with Katherine 100% on this one, honestly. There's always this division when something happens that shakes up someone who is a favorite of more liberal ends of the feminist/sj spectrum, it suddenly becomes that there were too many "extremists"/toxic feminists gunning for someone's head, when the truth of the matter is that abusive people pop up in every community. I don't like that Joss was hassled. I don't like it when anyone is hassled. But Joss really was not long for Twitter as it was, and a lot of what I saw was actually just angry criticism, versus organized hate campaigns versus people who merely exist or have an opinion. It's just frustrating because Joss is absolutely believed from the get-go, no matter what, but a lot of other people have to fight consistently to be believed by what is seriously harmful and oftentimes escalating harassment against them.

What's being shored up here is this narrative that it's all "internet feminists" fault, despite most of the shitflinging coming from a mixture of fanpeople, trolls specifically designed to harass as well as a mixture of women telling Joss that he was being sexist. So, I am not sure how this is all fucking feminists.

Pan's Labyrinth and Amelie would both be really good. I am also thinking The Color Purple as well. THIS LIST IS GETTING REALLY LONG.

I also know that I'm going to make everyone watch Ginger Snaps, as it's one of the few female-lead horror films that centers on her experience and didn't make me feel gross inside (Like Teeth, for example. I am never watching Teeth ever again.)

Same! So much horror is really valuable from a feminist perspective, even if I am too fraidy-cat to watch any of it.

I can only handle so much xenomorph.

Here's where the confusion lies: I had no idea that the SERIES of films is Alien, Aliens, etc. I seriously thought I was just getting Alien wrong. I AM A HORRIBLE NERD. We are watching "Alien" which is the first film in the ...trilogy? Is that the one that everyone wants to see or is the second film somehow better/more relevant than the first one?

Box behind my monitor is to stop my cat from climbing behind the monitor and knocking it forward onto my face. Cats are a detriment to computer peripherals.

I was seriously crying at my desk at work. Idle Thumbs has great talks about video games but I mostly stay for the ridiculous whimsy.

Well, since I don't have a huge DVD/BluRay library, I am going with whatever cut is on streaming services for rent, unfortunately! I saw parts of the original as a KID in the 80s, it'll be interesting to sit through it now as an adult, especially now that I know I am looking for rape metaphors. Really stoked.

I can make our own thread later since I think we do have quite a few people interested in watching. And yeah, Busby, I'd be okay with also highlighting women directors and whatnot! Narratives that have some meat to chew on for discussion are just what I'm aiming for.

why don't we watch ALL of the Alien(s) movies over the course of our talks!

I barely use Youtube ever and I get those videos a bit, that one particular one that says FemFreq is bullshit. I think it's having to do ANYTHING with gaming.

Oh, okay. Well maybe if we need a free week or something, we can still watch it anyways. But I think Aliens would be a great first week film, so let's go with that. My boyfriend works from home so him not being in the house for extended periods of time is VERY odd to me. I also hate it because being in the house alone at night is scary for me. (But thankfully we have a cat now.)

Oh yeah if someone has seen some of these movies and can give the group obvious content warnings like sexual violence, etc, that would also be super appreciated.

Wetlands People interested in movie club, any other suggestions? We can start watching stuff next weekend once we get more suggestions. I've got a couple of my own I'd want to put on the list as well but I have to have a good think about it.
