When it comes to freelancing, what I know is that you basically pitch the idea/concept to the editor and if it's your first time, your writing samples (in whatever format they want or a link to your portfolio) . If the editor accepts, then they give you additional comments about the idea, what to change, as well as word counts and agreed payment. You write up your shit, you turn it in, they edit and send corrections, you make the corrections (or fight them about it) and then it goes up at some point. Then you invoice them. Make sure to keep really good track of all of the payments you receive in a tax year because you will have to file your MISC 099 (in the US) if you made over 600 bucks. Also I know that it's incredibly hard to be in games writing professionally unless you want to perpetually hustle and write free-lance for a number of places that will underpay you and not pay you on time. It's a hard knock life, basically. -
I try to keep it real and working class for everyone. Remind me to tell you about the time I cleaned up semen.

Idle Thumbs 213: Build the Nublar

Yeah, it is. Which sucks because I like a lot of the stuff with Chloe and Max! (I'm almost done with Episode 2.) It just pulled me back a bit. -
Idle Thumbs 213: Build the Nublar

Life is Strange is at times both enjoyable and odd for different reasons - I like that there's literally ANY games where you can play a teen girl but the fact that it is dude developers and writers lurking behind all the dialogue and stuff is palpable. It's weird but it's so thoroughly transparent that it pulls me out of the story a lot. It's also like, uh, yet another story with teen girls where there's a rape subplot. -
The only Wiki edit I've ever made is to remove the word "feminist" from the description of the Femme Fatale/Strong Female Character anthology that GRRM came up with literally called Femme Fatale. I should have been a huge shitbutt and just put "citation needed."

Look, I'm firmly in the neo-endearment crowd and talking shit about Neko Atsume *inserts pic of cat asshole* -
Well before you get to pitching level, I do strongly suggest regularly updating something. Not only does it serve as a resume for when you DO pitch (trust me, they are more likely to pick people with a cadre of work up online already as samples) but it also gets you into a groove as to developing your voice and strengthening your skill. You don't run a 5k without jogging every day, you know?
-
I'm sure a few of us can talk about pitching!
-
Then I am issuing a challenge: if you can, get into a schedule and stick to it! I attempt this myself but unfortunately working full-time has worn this down some since I also produce a podcast and stuff on top of that.
-
Twig: Do it for free if it's on a personal blog. Otherwise, pitch it and get paid for it. If you write, you're a writer. Don't undervalue your labor!

Tegan: As far as Patreons go, we've liked it for our podcast. It helps to know that every month we're going to get a sum of money. However, I think Patreon is heavily structured around a particular project unless you're good at selling yourself as personality. I was thinking of suggesting to you a GoFundMe type thing first just so you can get out of your living sitch (not sure if you have one or not) but Patreon in the long run is a nice thing if you're good at producing content regularly.

It's funny that there's so much sneering about women nailing confessional styles and even being pigeonholed into writing that way because we're supposed to be emotional but a lot of it has to do because we're often pegged as outsiders or interlopers. A woman can't break through with mediocre piece writing on her own merits, confessional writing is often the way to "break in" and here we see how someone trying to ape that completely reveals how not-good they are at it. I am not sure any of this makes sense. Little loopy at the moment. Edit: Fuck you Reyturner, beat me to the punch!

Anyone is absolutely welcome to read my tweets but if they are logged in and I have blocked them, it's because I do not want them to be able to interact with ME. They can read it all they want but they shouldn't be able to talk to me. Do I wish they'd not be able to read my stuff at all? Absolutely. My stalker did this all the fucking time even if he was banned on numerous parachute accounts a day but I don't want him contacting me.

Yeah, I know there's no ethical consumption under capitalism but I'm completely okay with putting my money into people and shit that I like vs. Brad Wardell (though this is a non-issue, I still don't even know what he makes or does.) It's not a boycott if it's a personal choice you make for your own money.

Twin Peaks Rewatch 31: Fire Walk With Me
Apple Cider replied to Jake's topic in Twin Peaks Rewatch Episodes
I might write something more expansive later but this is still one of the only movies in my entire life that I've seen that has been sympathetic and centralized the narrative of someone being overtly abused. Which is so important. Edit: As far as the movie and the show treat Leland as being responsible for his own actions, what I feel is more interesting is just how much you realize that it's not isolated to JUST him. The entire town is pretty pre-occupied with corrupting or destroying innocent kids in their teen years and the movie makes that way more astoundingly clear since you get more of a sense of Jacques, Leland, One Eyed Jacks, etc. Everyone in this town feels entitled to creeping on minors, essentially. -
That's a great app, I will have to look into it.

What app do you use that lets you do all that? O_O

I block for a variety of reasons: 1.) Someone is bugging me 2.) Someone I don't know with a low post and follower count or objectionable content follows me 3.) Looks like a bot or a general business account spam-following me

It's always interesting when men who pride themselves on being critical thinkers can't understand that an article on fashion homogeneity is really about lack of diversity and double standards for non-comformity, presentation and meaning.

I've been meaning to check out Queen Bees and Wannabes mostly because I really liked Mean Girls and the actual basis behind it would be fascinating.

Idle Viewers: Feminist Film Club (Hedwig and the Angry Inch, 5/18)
Apple Cider posted a topic in Movies & Television
Hello everyone and welcome to the thread that we were discussing in the feminism thread. The purpose here is that every week we will watch one film and then have a rousing discussion about possible feminist techniques, narratives or overall points of a movie from a feminist angle. Participation is voluntary and you are definitely welcome to skip a week if a movie is not suitable for you (content or genre, we have a lot of people who don't like horror, etc). I will try to mix the movies up in terms of seriousness/humor and the like, so we're not watching a month's worth of uber-depressing films about the human condition. I believe that most films have some value from a feminist critical lens, so I am pretty sure we will have a lot of great suggestions to talk over. If you have any suggestions, pop them into the thread. Suggestions so far: Hedwig and the Angry Inch Alien Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles A Girl Walks Home At Night (horror) Babadook (horror) Gremlins 2 We Are the Best! Wetlands Since the presumption is that everyone is going to be watching the movies for discussion, spoilers will be permitted uncut but if you have spoilers about future movies for content/discussion reasons, please cut those and label what they are about. General content warnings are absolutely recommended (and don't count as spoilers) as we don't want to have people watch a movie and be surprised by something so if you've seen a movie prior to, let us know and we can put the appropriate content warnings on the movie of the week. Also welcome is any outside critical work that has been written about said film. MOVIE OF THE WEEK: HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH (5/18)
