  1. Dune

If you want to do a deep dive on dune and like podcasts this one is pretty good. It's in 12 parts and each one is more than an hour long. They also cover all the Tolkien books in extreme detail plus a few others. http://mythgard.org/academy/dune/
  2. Twin Peaks Discussion

I agree, the conversation will get too confusing if we are trying to talk about 4 movies at the same time. Maybe one up per week would be good, give us time to focus. I would think eraser head should be first, but it doesn't matter. Maybe reverse order would be fun.
  3. I agree that they are at finally getting to the actual investigation of the murder and surrounding conspiracy a bit late. Though, if i think back to season one the mystery always took a back seat to the characters. They didn't really break it down till the last 2 or 3 episodes. It's always been obvious that the girls and parties part was going to become the focus because they mention it in every episode. Also it is a bit to random that the missing girl from ep1 sent all the clues to us in ep4 so we can move forward. That being said ill take it over 95% of the rest of bs that is out there to watch. This has good characters and some visual style. I think it is most similar to Hannibal in terms of oddly non casual dialog and style over everything, but I love that show also so there you go.
  4. My suspicion is that the killer's goal is to bring some malfeasance out into the open. That would be why he might attack the first person to reach the crime scene but not kill them, if in fact hes still alive. The idea being that the first person there would probably try and cover something up or hide evidence, but if you disable him and call an ambulance, all will be left open. My feeling is that she was legitimately researching and trying to find the girl Casper was with, then seeing the content felt compelled to view more. It probably is connected to some past abuse, her time as a child in the commune. The other kids ending up badly. I don't know, maybe its sexist to automatically say i woman has to be abused to like porn, but i think the way it was portrayed, with the reflection in her eye, made it seem like a negative compulsion. The email about the connections to lynch forgot one. The scene of the crime had music playing on the radio when he entered, "there is always music in the air" connected to Jacques cabin in Twin Peaks. Last comment, about 10-15 years ago i use to listen to coast to coast in college, hanging out in the art dept computer lab until 1 am most nights. They used to talk a lot about some cult of super rich people in California that would wear animal masks at secret parties. A quick internet search brought back the connection Its called Bohemian Grove. If you type in bohemian grove and look at the images that come up it reminds me a lot of the occult images from season 1 of true detective. Apparently there is a giant Owl statue there and gatherings "those people who rule the world" . There is supposed to be an apparent connection to the Bushes as well which would make sense why they included the photo in the background of the mayor. I don't really buy into the truth of it but it might be some thematic connection to the series, like this seasons yellow king. Especially the owl thing, which feels like a twin peaks reference, the production company for the series is called parliament of owls, so there is that. I can't find the parliament of owls logo anywhere but they play it at the end of the show.
  5. When you were having that discussion about the tv murder mystery involving someone playing a video game to unlock the mystery. I couldn't stop thinking about the amazing 1984 Atari game spy movie cloak and dagger, which also involved a invisible friend that becomes visible at the end, and the Alamo.
  6. Twin Peaks Discussion

Sherilyn Fenn is answering questions on Facebook right now, there is a fb page - Official Twin Peaks Cast run site This campaign reminds me of when lynch frost went on tv in the 90's to save twin peaks from cancelation, oddly enough after the very episode we are on, slaves and masters.
  7. I never understood how dale managed to have an affair with the woman he was protecting, when her husband was his partner and the man he was protecting her from. Was earl going out to pick up Chinese food when they got together. All i can think about is the movie stake out but with awkward verbose men sitting in chairs and saying things like touche. What did Caroline witness if she didn't know her husband was the person she was being protected from? Could she not see through one of his stupid disguises. I read Frost's book the list of seven, about Arthur Conan Doyal having strange adventures, and I think Windom Earl is his attempt to have a Moriarty type character to vie with Coopers Holmes. He seemed to be really interested in that, considering list of seven came out in 93. The problem is that it is shoehorned into a show that didn't need another super-villain. You can't beat BOB. This was one of the episodes i started skipping when i would run the vhs tapes of twin peaks in the background while playing master of magic in the 90's. You can get the digital book of The king in yellow for free on kindle, I have been reading it lately and its a pretty good book of short stories loosely connected by people reading a book called the king in yellow and going insane. Nice 1890's meta fiction.
  8. James is terrible, but I have to admit when I was a impressionable youth in the nineties, I didn't see it. I often thought about "getting on a motorcycle and going away", though I have not, even now ever driven one. I also have to admit I had James Hair in my Senior Photo taken cira 1994. I think I was re-watching the VHS Box set back then and thinking, Man that hair rocks. It is not a proud moment for me.
  9. I totally agree with the substance of your post. Making Bob the lone actor of the crime is a weak way for the show to handle the plot. I suppose i am sort of saying that it's easy for us enlightened 2015ers to forget what kind of things people were watching in 1991, and so i am tiring to give it some credit for going as far as they did when they did. I'm not saying the shows on TV were bad, just that they were not even remotely subversive or challenging. I can see how that line, within the context of the show seems like the icing on BoB Cake. What I am tiring to say is that I feel like it has the opposite effect because it is talking about a supernatural character. Coopers response to Harry's confusion about BOB isn't to make a statement, He doesn't say Leland was innocent or that good upstanding well dressed men don't do these things. He asks a question. "Is it any easier to believe that... " Is it easier for us to believe in a Crazy ghost man than it is to accept that the guy we like molests his daughter? Yes it is, and that is what is fucked up. I felt like this line was meant to subtly point that out. Maybe I'm just reading to much into it, but that is how I have always viewed that line.
  10. I was surprised to hear the e mailer's and hosts response to the "is it any easier to believe a father would rape and murder his own daughter" line. I've always taken that as a nod in the other direction. As in, its so blatantly off that its meant to point at the true horror of the crime in the world of the people watching the show. Bob is a fairy tail that we the watchers of the show need the same way that people felt they needed fairy tales about witches eating children. We can't face the horrors we live with so we cushion it with fantasy. I know it still sucks that the felt like they had to soft sell it, and they double downed on this episode with the funeral for a murder. I wish it was the funeral episode that and no one showed up except cooper and a disgusted doc Hayward.I just want to reiterate that in 1991 most people watching TV were not able to talk about this stuff. Seriously just look at the other shows people were watching. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1990%E2%80%9391_United_States_network_television_schedule This is the mystery show that came on at 8:00 before twin peaks
  11. When I saw the preview for this episode when It aired originally, as a 13 year old, I was shocked that the show was going to continue. I had always thought it was a two part mini series. But I was ....wrong.
  12. I think that watching this now, I feel like the "solving" of the mystery is sort of a passive aggressive act. It is the anti Sherlock / Agatha / Scooby ending. Usually this is where the detective brings all the suspects together and either explains the mystery or does something to trick the killer into revealing themselves. Instead everyone is brought together and the detective remembers his dream where the victim told him who killed her. Ok CBS you want it here it is. No puzzles to piece together, and no logical path to be followed we are just solving it because someone said they like gum. Its also such a twin peaks thing to do so I can't blame them. I think I would have liked to ride the ship that took the Palmer Mystery off into the infinite sunset, but without Leland crushing Mattie's skull we wouldn't have Fire walk with me, and I don't think the show would resonate the same way if we didn't get Leland the killer. I am almost positive we wouldn't be getting a 3rd season 25 years later. So If I could watch both versions I would, but unless i can transcend the reality In which I currently reside in I am happy enough. Also I remember that European Pilot was the only twin peaks you could get in VHS for a while before the box set came out. The VHS box set of course didn't have the american pilot in it. So you had to watch the European pilot if you wanted to see it all. Which was damn confusing when trying to introduce it to someone new, and also after a while you forgot how the original pilot ended so it was all crazy.
  13. So my 5 year old daughter is turning 6 in march and I think I have convinced my wife to get her a consul system. I have been a PC gamer since the mid 90's. The last one I owned was a Super Nintendo. So It would seem like the wii u should be the obvious choice for a kid, but apparently my wife and daughter were over her friends house and were playing some dance game on the 360. This led my wife to ask if a Xbox was a better choice. Now I of course said that I would look into it. Of Course I would love to have a Xbox One in my living room. My PC is in our bedroom which means the only time I can use it is when my wife asleep or reading, which means I have to watch my noise lvl. It would be so nice to simply go into the living room and not worry about it. That being said, other than dance games and lego games, and minecraft. I don't see much in the way of great kids games. Also I think it would be awesome to play with her in things like mario cart/smash bros. It seems like most Xbox games are better played alone or online. So what should I do? What is the best thing for me? for my 5 year old? who does like minecraft and Lego games on pc/tablet. Though Im pretty sure Mario cart would blow her away. Is there anything I would get out of the Wii? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.
  14. I think my main goal is to be able to sit with my daughter and play with her. I always assumed that the Wii-u would be the best option, but I was hoping that the x box might have a cadre of kids games that would be able to cover the same ground. Then I could kill two birds. She does really like minecraft on our kindle fire, and she loves harry potter lego on PC (though I always end up figuring out the puzzles) She also loves flash games on pbs kids. I have been trying for years to work out a system where I can play PC games on my TV, and I can do it, but it means dragging three cords through the house while everyone is sleeping and pretending to be comfortable with a tv tray thats to small for a mouse and keyboard. I think the WII is going to win this. Also I would have to get the Xbox with the camera for the games we would need. which is a bit more expensive anyway. Do the older wii games work on wii u? I can probably get them cheap on ebay if they do.
  15. Twin Peaks Discussion

A couple of tid bits. 2 things I remember from the director commentaries, One is that the set directors always put a different crazy soup on the board at the double R you can look for it if you are patient. The other was that it was a running thing that the people staying at the great northern always had a different theme in each episode, some are subtle and then there is the singing barbershop quartet convention. Check out the tarot cards some one made of twin peaks on Esty, Pretty awesome. If you like David Lynch try reading some of Haruki Murakami's Novels or short stories. Pure Awesome.
  16. My Assumption is that we should be able to talk about the episode itself. If the reveal in the episode is to much to go into until the podcast comes out then maybe it should be stated at the opening post, or maybe there should just be a warning for anyone who hasn't seen the episode not to look further until they had.
  17. "Amen! what are you looking at? what are you waiting for? you make me sick! you damn hypocrites make me sick! everybody knew she was in trouble, but we didn't do anything. All you good people, you want to know who killed Laura? You DID! We all did." Bobby Brigs at Laura's funeral Why didn't we know? Laura is showing all the symptoms of someone suffering from severe sexual abuse. I'm not a psychologist but you would think it would be obvious to some one watching at home that Leland is the killer. Now my memories of watching the first run of this show are not great, I was 12/13 years old, but I don't believe too many people saw it coming. Why? Is it because Laura Palmer's actions were not really that different from any other character in a soap opera. Is it because the viewing audience was used to seeing women portrayed as manipulative sex objects on television without context? Did the TV show flip us on our heads and say hey, Laura was actually a representation of a Human not a 2 dimensional fem fatal from a Noir Film? I would think that people watching it fresh today might have a better chance at figuring it out. How many crime dramas today involve child abuse and insest vs 1990? I don't think many episodes of Matlock, Murder she wrote, or father Dowlings mysteries went there. Maybe it was Leland's portrayal. Leland was sympathetic, the music cues told us so. He showed remorse, and we all know that guilty people never show remorse (Ask Adnan Syed). But wait, it was Bob right? Leland didn't kill anybody? Did he? I think you can make your own choice about what happens inside the world of twin peaks, but what we the audience should take away from watching this is that you can not see the demons lurking in people. Whether or not they come from deep inside or from some nether world that we can't perceive, bad people don't have signs or music cues to tell you what to think.
  18. Just finished the first three chapters, Bravo! Excellent use of music and the editing is well done and effective. Voice over sounds good too. I would recommend it to anyone that wants a deeper look at twin peaks. Also good of you to hold reveals to the obvious places where a first time watcher wouldn't stumble over them. My personal favorite stuff is the analysis of the last episode and the info about Theosophy. I was unaware of a lot of the philosophical background material. Also I don't think I was as aware of how much Frost had to do with the mythology of the show, though I read his book the list of seven years ago which should have clued me in. All in all a great guide to twin peaks.
  19. Hey, lost in movies, Just found your videos today. watched your first one on my lunch break. Very well done. Look forward to seeing the rest of them soon. Thanks.
  20. I like the idea of the two heists happening simultaneously, never noticed it before, but the show is called twin peaks. Double plots are just par for the course here. Also it doesn't surprise me that this was popular in Japan, surreal film and literature is huge there.
  21. One interesting thing that no one has mentioned, is that Jose, when talking to Jonathan, completely drops her accent. It is obvious now the level of duplicity that she is capable of. It also makes you wonder what she was doing getting English lessons from Laura. Also, Truman is so oblivious. He seams totally incapable of seeing past his own obsession of Jose, which i would add seems to be based entirely on how pretty she is. Also after hearing the episode I wish I still had my season 1 set, I lent it to my wife's friend a few years ago, I wasn't worried about it since I have the gold box set. But now I would like to hear those commentaries from the directors. I've been looking around for some transcripts online but no luck yet. You can buy the set for 10-20 bucks on ebay, but ive only seen foreign editions when i looked, and there can be compatibility issues with american DVD players, i am no expert. I did come across some scripts for a few episodes in season one, I haven't had a chance to read them yet, but ill put links here if you are interested. http://leethomson.myzen.co.uk/Twin_Peaks/Season_One/Twin_Peaks_1x01_-_Traces_to_Nowhere.pdf http://twinpeaksarchive.blogspot.com/2011/12/rare-2nd-draft-script-to-twin-peaks-006_23.html
  22. First off every TV show / movie has some established level of unreality to it. Some try hard to make as close copy of our waking world as they can, others embrace the dreamscape. Even reality TV is a complete fabrication. It is my opinion that tv/movies are not a representation of our lives, but of our dreams. We sit in a dark room and become catatonic for an hour or more at a time sharing dreams. I believe David Lynch is acutely aware of this and lets intuition and emotional resonance guide him more so than his intellect. Which I believe is why the actions of the characters seem unreal. I would also argue that the characters on Days of our lives/law and order/ect... are equally strange and do things that would look completely odd in the real world. I think the reason for the reaction, is that Twin Peaks while always "dreamy" takes a step down the "dream ladder" to a deeper level of unreality in this episode. I am sympathetic for viewers that feel jarred or off put, even angry when the level of "dreaminess" shifts in a film, when they think they are watching one thing and it changes into something else. I am sure that it wakes them up to the artifice of the experience. I would also say that if you are aware that all of this is a dream then it no longer matters what genre you are watching as long as it is engaging, inventive, and fulfilling. I would agree that it is all metaphor, but it's not explicit. There is a lot of room for the viewer to fill in meaning. I think David is aware that everything in his films have meaning because they resonate to him. Which is to say his unconscious mind knows what everything that he is doing means, even if he is not completely aware in the moment that he is filming it. The act of creating gives him a window to see what those deeper truths are. For the record most of this is my own conjecture. I feel like I understand Lynch mostly from watching his work, and from some of the things I have heard him say. but i am no expert.
  23. Ok, so things i noticed on this watch of episode 8ish, I get the feel that was was some kind of change in direction during the break, several characters make directional shifts, which can be explained (real world) by them plotting out the second season, and in twin peaks by the fall out from the season one finally. Donna's character shifts from Nancy Drew to Nancy Drew pretending to be in a nior crime film. This likely comes from her first foray into crime, or maybe she is just feeling the ghost of Laura looking over her shoulder and thinks that its what James wants from her. Maddy has the glasses breaking scene, though i wonder if they should have included her visit to the optometrist's office to get contacts, otherwise she is opening the door to some Mr.Magoo type comedy scenarios. Also she is apparently picking up Psychic signals from the carpet. Bobbie seems to be thinking of a life outside the world of crime, Open love with Shelly, Respect from his father, but Hank looks like he will be a problem. Leland went from a Sobbing mess to a Dancing fool. I cant even tell you how many times over the last 20 years i hummed that merrsy dots song from watching this to much, it is just so awesome and ridiculous. Apparently Snuffing people with pillows just makes one happy.
