  1. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Most of you will probably know that I'm not as hostile to TB as most of you guys... that bullet point list that Vainamoinen put up is very accurate minus some of really bitter stuff in between the lines and in the end. So it is basically that in a very bitter tone and more targeted lines toward Rowen. Overall I'm sad about both Rowen getting piled by trolls wanting to get an 'apology' out of him and trolls using cancer as a ground to make their trolling nastier to TB (I'm not suggesting that would excuse that audio cloud... just... still... blah). I'm going to focus my thoughts on Maddy getting good gig at Mary Sue for now, this shit is way too stressful
  2. Keiji Inafune's Mighty No.9

That is a thing that I'm most curious about. I know that it's passed off as common knowledge that higher KS limit == less people donating cause they fear KS project not succeeding (excluding the notion that KS project creator just want to see any proportion of KS, so they low ball it), but I wonder if that is true at all? Like you said, perhaps Shenmue 3 could have reached $10mil even if they set it as their initial goal? On the other hand it sounds like Suzuki just wanted to make a Shenmue game even if it wasn't going to be an open world 3d game (but what would that even mean?)... wonder what kind of game he had in mind with $2 mil cause even then it's kinda small. So true and I'm still amused by the fact that Bloodstained is on anti-Konami hype train so well that the information buried in an interview about '90% will be funded by publisher' never really caught on outside of few people, most notably in my mind the team members behind Skullgirls because they had a strong history of getting lot of shit for actually posting honest but still low ball estimate for cost of a character in a 2d fighting game (think they said it was around $50k minimum per character, backers were mad about that being wasteful).
  3. Episode 314: Massive Chalice

I would be grateful to hear the goods and shortcomings to this game. Cause it sounds like it should be right up in my alley.

  5. What's your stable of staples?

Yo Tycho, it feels like it's been a while since I've seen you~
  6. Keiji Inafune's Mighty No.9

But that's not unique to Shenmue 3. Bloodstained if anything has done far worse in that regard. But it didn't jibe well with the anti-publisher (Konami specifically but it had spilled over to more generic sense) hype that it was riding on so I guess maybe that's why people generally didn't bother to get upset on that one on Bloodstained...?
  7. Keiji Inafune's Mighty No.9

Maybe dartmonkey was referring to how Shenmue was marked for $2,000,000 but Suzuki said he would need at least $10,000,000 to make it as open ended as previous games AFTER kickstarter goals have passed? I personally thought that much was obvious because $2 mil for open ended game of that scope is laughably unrealistic (even $10 is pretty tight, guess we will see what corners they cut compared to other AAA open world games) but I guess people who really didn't think about that felt they were mislead on the budget, which is true to a point but there is lot of that going around on these kickstarters and articles surrounding it (to make up for more dramatic story).
  8. AFAIK that is practically accurate assessment. I mean there is likely to be more qualitative difference between cheapest i5 and most expensive i7 (afterall, good overclocking is never guaranteed, just likely) but the practical differences are really blurry otherwise.
  9. What's your stable of staples?

Right now two games I use as my 'go-to' game when kinda ambivalent about how to spend some free time alone is Spider Solitaire and EU4. I think I might add CiV and Endless Legend to that but not sure yet since I have to be playtesting my own little 4X-lite soon
  10. Yeah what Architecture said, i5 - i7 both overclock well, which usually ends up meaning performance difference between differently priced models mean a lot less because instead of it being difference between 3.6ghz i7 vs 2.8 i5, it usually end up being 4.2 OCed i7 vs 4.0 i5. Even if you don't overclock it, most games just don't stress the CPUs that much. That and upcoming DX12 is also going to further reduce the loads on CPU.

I second Osmosisch and Vainamoinen. Dumb use of curator (which has issues outside of this) cause at best it's a snarky joke based on his on-going hyper-implementation-critiquing-persona (as seen by the curator page description that's probably the intention), but I still appreciate him calling out threats and harassers but also he should have known better and could have done better. I mean he recently dropped a version of his video because he got lot of flak for not understanding some intricacy about game's balance. If he pulled his video to avoid flak, he should certainly pulled the list (which is primarily there to be snarky) to prevent assholes from using it to pile on others. Still, really not comfortable with asking Ninety-Three to stop because while his/her arguing points may be pedantic (I personally don't think so), I definitely don't see them as combative so it feels really uncomfortable asking someone to just stop talking. But then again, I have previously asked Deadpan and Twig to stop something because I felt they were being combative out of misunderstanding so... not passing judgement, just saying it feels very on edge : /
  12. Episode 312: Historical Accuracy

Physical tech difference is represented and is important in Hearts of Iron games. It wants the tech year level to be the qualitative difference. Like, Allies making better planes isn't built in, it's there if you get to year ahead in tech. And given how hard it is to keep up-to-date in all the techs (impossible in HoI3 (this is in very stark contrast to say, EU4)), this works out very organically and wonderfully, IMO. Edit: and to actually answer the question you proposed, I think it should... but then again it also depends? WWII is pretty tech centric war (I mean I guess so many wars are but I meant more so than others, like if one side started with the gear that it did at the end of the war, that would be a pretty huge difference) and that should be noticeable even on grand strategy level by some abstracted means. The variety among say, sherman tanks maybe doesn't warrant a notable change, but going from Panzer 3 to Panther should. And on grant strategic level in the scope of Hearts of Irons (where you get the opportunity for years of pre war development), it certainly shouldn't be a predetermined factor. So that's why I like the organic solution of HoI3 where it shows tech advantages but it's something that you have to decide to go for or not at cost of something else.

  14. The threat of Big Dog

Gah, cool news but it fumbles around for too long, worrying about theoretical problems (what if machines make moral mistakes, etc., stuff of pure fiction as of right now because there is no intelligence in these machines to speak of) instead of addressing current ones which it does, but only towards the end (responsibility of makers and users of these machines). My personal biggest gripe/worry is that automation of hardpower would funnel it even more towards the existing elite.
  15. Things to look forward to?

nice find, looking good and interesting to see a brand new TW game running at solid 60fps like that~
  16. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I would feel sympathy for due process argument (personally a big sympathizer for 'systematic justice') if it was somewhat related beyond feint similarity. The core appeal of due process is for the greater systematic good. I don't see any of that here. It was one profit motivated decision overruled by different type of profit motivated decision within a corporate environment. Nowhere does the notion of greater social good apply to whether Gawker's business entity will pull articles or not when Gawkers never really gave two shit about social goods in the first place. I mean only social good to speak of is them retracting an article that most likely caused harm to a person.

  20. Summarizing a game

That says a lot actually. Good stuff. Like you said it's rough around the edges but any people with industry experience get that prototypes are well, rough. So beyond the rough exterior, I see mobility heavy third person gameplay. Interesting stuff, maybe another gif showing another aspect as well? Like, would you have player ever shoot or is this meant to be melee focused? Also given that premise (mobility heavy third person), what's your thought on Vanquish? Is that perhaps something close to what you are going for?

Another warning about clyde's video It shows that primary victims of extremism is the locals first and foremost... very powerful stuff...
  22. anime

I have seen 3 episodes of the OVA on netflix and Kusanagi feels just lot more flawed. Some of it which I like, but like you said, it could also come off as non sensical because previous iteration of this character was so perfect (not as in characterization was perfect but I mean character was meant to be this uber commando-hacker-leader). But again, I felt strong appeal of Ghost in the Shell was that these were characters who pulled through tough situations by sheer competency so I feel your frustration with the new direction... like, I never felt that GitS relied on Deus Ex Machina (the irony given that game Deus Ex has some thematic synergy with this series lol) that so many anime does to pull the good guys out of bad situation. Instead, they do work. Work. Work. and bam case is solved by them doing tedious work very very well.
  23. Summarizing a game

I still stand by gif idea. You don't have to say anything. Make a gif of a cool moment and share that. It's today's version of elevator pitch.
  24. International Politics

Googling/wiki tells me Euro put down about $2,430,000,000 (converted) worth of aids? This is of course another curious issue, which is that information seems readily available but it's so hyper filtered through google and focused on wiki that I understand that the numbers I'm posting may be complete horseshit and the very nature of bulk of my info gathering may be as well.
  25. International Politics

Before anything, I think assisting the refugees has to come first because most part of that can be done by Syria's many neighbors all unilaterally. It looks like lot of work is being done in that area but still a whole lot more could be improved. USA could perhaps match Euro's commitment there, China could probably do way better, more nations working with neighboring host like Turkey. I agree it's still fubar given that some of those donors are supporting various factions in the conflict but still, one step at a time I suppose.
