  1. Movie/TV recommendations

Hey now. Antz is way better than A Bug's Life. Kung Fu Panda is pretty much a perfect movie. And How to Train Your Dragon is amazing. also UP SUCKS after the first fifteen minutes. truly bad.

  3. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I feel like that's.... a bit reductive. Gamergate is appalled at 'accessible' art due to its growing inclusivity. Pre-Raphaelites were just bummed about particular art techniques that were taking over. Also I don't think Gamergate will get in art world trouble for painting a woman not up to the period's standard of beauty any time soon. Angering people by painting Mary not beautifully seems pretty rad. GG seems like the ones who would be angered over the pre-raphaelites "Taking away our 'Mary boobs'" so to speak. And come on, this is amazing: "In particular, the group objected to the influence of Sir Joshua Reynolds, founder of the English Royal Academy of Arts, whom they called 'Sir Sloshua' "

  6. Feminism

Even riffing sometimes comes off as one-upmanship I think. As a pretty neurotic person, lately I only tweet at people who don't follow me if they're waxing about something really interesting and I think I have something actually valuable to contribute that's not an argument, and even then i usually qualify that I'm sorry if I'm butting in. Maybe this is overkill.
  7. Non-video games

Playing it with a group Thursday. Will report back. A lot of the cards call for historical figures, scientists, poets, etc. apart from more poppy things. You can answer them with characters or real people. It's fun learning about people from friends. And some interesting conversations arise in the form of disputes over adjectives, whether or not an orange card applies to someone's answer for example.
  8. Twin Peaks Discussion

Anyone else think James Hurley and Harold Smith might be the smartest characters on the show in how they are both fed up with/completely avoid the bizarre hellscape that sometimes rears its head in Twin Peaks? Just joking about James, but in all seriousness, I feel like there might be something to Harold's agoraphobia. Bummer about the hanging.
  9. Wow. That interview. The obliviousness in telling a woman to her 'face' on twitter what the ideal feminist should be, while essentially calling her a whiner. One of the most exciting games journalists in the business, no less. I was already pretty over Wardell with his offering the Zoe Quinn revenge porn artist a job interview. That being said, I'm very conflicted about OTC. The podcast would have completely sold me on it if not for the shenanigans.
  10. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

So like 4 years ago I got stuck on a single puzzle piece in Braid's shadow stage. I beat it today, after randomly deciding to give it a shot. I don't know what was wrong with me before. But yeah I dunno. That game's story kind of grosses me out. The ending is pretty great but the tone of the rest of it is kind of bizarre.

  12. Non-video games

Played Buffalo: The Name Dropping game with my gf last night after seeing Mary Flanagan's Indiecade East closing Keynote. Pretty good! I'm pretty terrible. I have a slow brain when attempting to recall famous people and characters. Excited to try it with more than 2 players, though.

  14. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I'm just going to repost what I posted on Gamerghazi just now: "I attended my first games conference thing today. It was a wonderful event full of all different kinds of people. I was really surprised by how diverse the crowd was. I played some neat New 3ds XL games, like Gunman Clive 2, which was beautiful and challenging. I played for half an hour, and got like 8 stages deep as others came and went, frustrated (there were 4 set up, at least one was always unused - I wasn't hogging! D: ). Framed, on the iPad, was fucking awesome. Mobile games are so exciting right now. I mellowed out with a wonderful exploration game called Shape of the World for a bit. I saw some great talks by merritt kopas, Cara Ellison, Liz Ryerson, Matt Albrecht, Gonzalo Frasca, etc. This is the current state of the fest's hashtag: https://twitter.com/search?f=realtime&q=%23IndieCadeEast&src=tyah People use this hashtag to post highlights from game design talks, share their opinions, share photos, etc. I can 100% guarantee spamming a bunch of techraptor articles all over it is not going to convert any 'neutral' Indiecade East attendees over to gamergate's side. That was the plan, yes? The only thing that seeing 16 blue gamergate illustrated portrait or purple and green logo tweets in a row does is annoy us a little, little bit. It's also easy to ignore. It just takes a flick of a thumb to get past the cascade of easily identifiable horse shit. If anything, this will 'convert' 'neutrals' to 'anti-gg'. So congrats on slightly tainting a good thing, and slightly annoying a bunch of people who really love games. Also worth mentioning that virtually no (maybe definitely no?) gamergate authored #IndieCadeEast tweets are in the 'top' section of the hashtag. Thank god. So gg, GG."
  15. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I didn't back the Kickstarter so I don't have an angry dog in this fight and don't really care but i just don't see the point of sticking a finger in someone's face and shouting "LIAR! THE WORD THAT BEST DESCRIBES YOU IS LIAR! LIAR. ADMIT IT. JUST SAY THE WORDS. WHY WONT YOU ADMIT IT?" Presumably people who would back a game are familiar with the history of outrageous delays in game development history and should assume a little bit of that risk.

I had an interview with Barnes and Noble today because I'm tired of relying totally on freelance gigs. I think they liked me.
  18. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

SVU has had a lot of dire, bummer, seemingly hopeless endings, but I've always read them as saying "This is fucked up and needs to change" rather than "This is how it is and how it'll always be." I can see why people would be upset. I just don't think the show is trying to send any kind of "Give up" message.
  19. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I don't know, that was complicated. The themes of that episode were kind of "The legal system/society at large fails these victims," and "There's nothing wrong with professional sex work." She read that script beforehand and made a pretty positive blog post about it afterwards. ^ I didn't hate the episode, but this is coming from my place of privilege in not being a gamergate victim.
  20. I'm sure I'm just repeating points that were discussed plenty but I feel like it might still be too early in the lifetime of games to declare whether or not they generally age worse than film. A 90 year old's 90th year is probably not much different from their 88th year, but a 16 year old's 16th year probably feels pretty different from their 13th year. Way more hair and stuff. I realize these aren't the ages of the mediums and there are other technological considerations and issues of inheriting traits from other media but yeah. Okay silly analogy over. Also were you talking about Killing Them Softly?

  22. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Sure, there's something to be said for collage internet art and riffing on memes. You can view it as working well within the boundaries 'forced' upon you, or as somewhat homogenized creativity that's an ancestor of /r/AdviceAnimals. I guess I lean towards the former, but i still find an ad highlighting ytmnd as the peak/'teacher' of creativity pretty silly.
  23. Amateur Game Making Night

Cool, man! It reminds me of some of Bracket Games's experimental games, but with snazzy art and music. this is more or less my first semi-serious attempt at a pixel art scene. It's not quite finished, but I'm pretty happy with it so far. I'm sure it's full of horrible amateur technique. may try to riff a little noir-y, murakami-y game off of it. edit: oh, and the main room lights are off, by the way. They can be flicked on by the hypothetical player.
  24. I'm so bummed Super Mega Baseball is only on Playstation :C
