yeah, that's why I used all caps for my shouting professor. for what it's worth, pretty much the whole point of most of Zhou's series is to examine said contextual functions of techniques. Hopefully now that he's established a following he can explore more slightly obscure territory like in his recent Lynne Ramsay piece.

"Every frame a painting" might be silly when examined literally but it's just a catchier version of "make every shot count/actually think about every shot," which is a perfectly fine mantra to keep in the back of one's filmmaking head. Whatevs. My film 101 prof used to repeat loudly "EVERY SHOT NEEDS TO BE SOMETHING YOU'D HANG ON YOUR WALL." Also I saw Tangerine on Monday, SO GOOD.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One-way_mirror I always rationalized that in my brain with the fact that it shows the same scene regardless of which of the "two-ways" you look at it.

there's a good amount of Inside Out discussion in the Feminism thread

all else being equal, if the only MCU I've seen is iron man, iron man 2, Thor, the incredible hulk, and guardians, how many Popcorns less or more will I enjoy Ant-Man versus someone who's seen it all?

... they want to get him fired from the company he owns and is?

well isn't it more like, "you like that sausage, do ya? well you won't after you see the inner workings of how it's made." like knowledge of the gross process ruins the [strikethrough]proverbial[/strikethrough] delicious product? I could be wrong

check out The Tribe and/or Tangerine! Might see the latter tonight. The Lobster sounds great though ~*edit*~ : ended up seeing The Stanford Prison Experiment at ifc. pretty riveting and upsetting movie. though i may be biased as it's directed by a fellow UMiami film school alumnus

Man, I thought Dope was a joy. Kind of all over the place at times but very propulsive.
  11. Time is a long and bloated circle. Wasn't he doing casino things in the pilot while raven man was transporting Caspere's corpse? I reckon it could've been an accomplice or not synchronous.
  12. I feel like his brand of shame is more tied to his weird upbringing and military hypermasculinity than factors like that. I'm generally in agreement with Argobot though, it feels a little strange. we can only assume/hope there will be an enormous payoff of some kind for this. Chekhov's Giant Collection of Knives.

  14. Jurassic World: Wasting away in Margaritaville

Was anyone else confused by Claire yelling at Larry "Be a man and do something for once in your miserable life" when five minutes prior he heroically decided to 'go down with the ship' and see the conflict through?

on the spy movie note, I watched Mission: Impossible for the first time in probably a decade last night. Was pretty struck by how simple but well constructed the sequences are. I feel like I somehow missed a lot as a 16 year old, which is odd given how goofily straightforward it is sometimes.
  16. Off the top of my head there's Gus Van Sant's Psycho and Swingers.
  17. Yes, that was something. As for episode 3 and the show in general, I care so little about Frank's storyline it hurts. And that Lynchian blue stage performance opening made me feel cosmically embarrassed.

  19. Feminism

I don't think I ever had a problem with broccoli. I had a problem with mushrooms.
  20. Feminism

Maybe all toddlers hate broccoli and that's when disgust is formed

I also felt like it might've ribbed its "volcanos facing the wrong way" gag from adventure time, memories of boom boom mountain. I really dug how Sadness had a different body type and giant glasses! but I guess they still all had the round head, doe eyes, tiny nose thing going on.

does anyone else have Movie Pass? I'm on my two week free trial and used it for the first time a couple nights ago and will probably do MMXXL or Inside Out tonight. it seems like a pretty incredible deal, especially in NYC where it works at nearly every theater including ifc, bam, and nitehawk. the only bummer is you have to wait 24 hours between uses. so I saw Ex Machina on Wednesday at 10:50pm and was going to see the 7pm When Marnie Was There Thursday before I remembered this restriction. poop. edit: sorry for the ad
