  1. For those interested in Star Wars Armada, the guys at Shut Up & Sit Down did a playthrough which you can watch here. Looks like a pretty great game, but it does seem a bit too expensive for me at the moment.
  2. Esports Today 9/3/2015

Heroes of the Storm as an eSport is an interesting thing. It seems to me to be the clearest sign of the draft determining the game, with it being rare for a bit of a more unconventional draft to be successful. I'm also not sure that HotS is a particularly interesting game to watch. The aspects that make it more interesting to play - shorter games, emphasis on teamfights, less individual play and more team play - make the game less interesting to watch, in my opinion. The games usually end up being very quick and being a burst of action all in one go, rather than a longer game with spikes of action. I watched a game of LoL the other day and despite having never played it I did find it a bit more interesting to watch as the game slowly ramps towards a climax.
  3. This is the first Lords Management games I've put any time in to - nearly 300 games now, which is vastly more than the 2 games I've had in DOTA 2. I think I am now reaching the stage where the things that first attracted me to this game are now putting me off. I really liked it's simplicity but that is now reaching the point where heroes have very predictable roles. The way the game is played means that certain builds and team compositions will pretty much always win out unless there is a huge mismatch in skill level. This leads to much more predictable games, at least in quick match which I have predominantly been playing. There are occasions where seeing the hero compositions of each side you can already see that the odds are heavily stacked against you, and with most heroes there is little scope to change that. I do really enjoy playing HOTS though! I've been playing predominantly with friends and we've had such a blast. I just don't think that the way the heroes are balanced at the moment it will have the staying power for years to come. As Blizzard fine-tunes the balance this may change but I also think there aren't enough ways to play that Blizzard haven't planned, which is probably a consequence of a lack of an item shop to let certain unforeseen combinations to come up. Playing this has started to lay the groundwork for me getting into another Lords Management game though, and I'd be interested to see whether there is much crossover between this game and League of Legends or DOTA 2 as players get comfortable with the mechanics.
  4. Games you enjoyed for the "wrong" reasons

When I was about 10 my friend would come round and we would play Halo 2 together. We would mostly just play maps with loads of vehicles so we could drive round in circles and off jumps - very rarely would we actually try to kill each other. On one map we found a particular spot that if you flew at with a Banshee would instantly kill you, coming up that you were "killed by the guardians". We were quite proud about finding what we thought was a weird bug (although in hindsight it was clearly intentional on the developer's part).
  5. Broken Age - Double Fine Adventure!

I think the documentary is the best part of the whole process that created Broken Age. I enjoyed Broken Age, it was a fun adventure, but to me its the window into its creation that is fascinating and will hopefully persist for as long as the game itself does. I would pay to have a running series on games production from Double Fine that basically continued the documentary, but from Tim's comments in the last episode it seems like he wants a break from that openness, which I'm not that surprised about.
  6. For those interested, both Anno 2070 and Anno 1404 went on sale on Steam today. Anno 1404 is particularly cheap, I'm thinking of picking it up myself. I have heard it comes with some pretty horrendous DRM as well though. I loved the discussion about this series, it's made me really want to play it now!
  7. When I was playing the other day someone said I was bad and should look at heroesfire for builds. Who knows, maybe random internet person was being helpful!
  8. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate

My 3DS has problems with the triggers - they are rather temperamental, and will more often than not fail to respond when pressed. Having played the Monster Hunter demo, I feel like this is probably gonna be a big problem trying to play this game! I've just realised that getting a Circle Pad could resolve the problem, as in addition to providing an additional analog stick it also has another set of triggers. Does anyone here have any experience using the Circle Pad in general, and specifically to play Monster Hunter? I realise this is probably a pretty specific request!
  9. What's so special about pixel art?

An artist's reaction to using pixel art... Thoughts?
  10. Books, books, books...

Just finished Flowers for Algernon. An excellent book. It took me a while to get in to it, I think primarily because of the style of the early chapters, but looking back those set up the rest of the book really well. A challenging look at intelligence in a few different forms.
  11. Recently completed video games

I've just finished this game in the past few days too, and I really enjoyed it. There wasn't all that much difficulty to it but I really liked the way the world opened up and let you tackle it in any order. I din't know how much the difficulty changes on the Hero Mode option that opens up once you finish - I think I remember seeing some comments that the difficulty really steps up on that mode. I'm not sure how interested I am in replaying so soon after the first playthrough though.
  12. I liked Mass Effect's approach to lore/background details, with a really extensive encyclopedia type database that unlocked as you found things in the world. I always enjoyed reading the entries as they were interesting and provided a lot of context to details in the game, but didn't need to be read for what was going on. Caveat: I have never got further than ~15 hours in to Mass Effect, despite trying several times, so whilst I really like that game I've never even got close to finishing it. I keep meaning to do so, but the idea of tackling such a large game really puts me off as I know I don't have the attention span for it.
  13. I started playing Hearthstone just over a year ago, but I never really got into it and soon stopped playing. Yesterday I found out a few of my friends have been playing it, so whilst we were at my house we did a joint Arena run with the three of us chipping in (although I admittedly didn't contribute much, not really knowing what's good etc). It was such a blast and has now really made me want to pick it up again
  14. Homeworld Remastered

Continuing the vein of remastering old games that seems quite prevalent at the moment: http://store.steampowered.com/app/244160/ I've never actually played any of the series, but I've heard good things and I'm looking forward to trying them out. I like the move of having both the "remastered" (whatever that means in this context) and the original games in one package.

  16. How demanding is the game? Do you think it's likely to work on my crappy laptop with Intel HD 3000 graphics?
  17. Project Godus: Don't believe his lies

RPS had a pretty crazy interview with him after some of the things that have been said this week. The interview isn't an easy read by any means, and John Walker really puts him on the spot. It's hard to see him acting maliciously, but it certainly does make him look incompetent.
  18. Project Godus: Don't believe his lies

There's been a few articles about Godus' development in the past few days: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2015/02/09/oh-godus-what-the-hells-going-on/ http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2015/02/11/loss-of-faith-will-godus-ever-have-a-god-of-gods/#more-269889 http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2015-02-11-the-god-who-peter-molyneux-forgot I'm glad I'm not a backer, because this stuff varies between disappointing and infuriating. The title of this thread seems appropriate. Molyneux has consistently overpromised before, but this time he just seems like an asshole rather than merely charmingly self-deluded. The fact he's now working on another game, described in similar ways his previous games have been, would indicate some things never change. I want to believe he has good intentions, but it's difficult in this case.
  19. Other podcasts

The Infinite Monkey Cage is a good science podcast. One of the hosts is a particle physicist, but they cover a pretty broad spectrum of different sciences and most episodes are both interesting and funny.
  20. Self-imposed challenge modes

The combat in Mirror's Edge was so awful though. I did a no-gun run too, and it was always the combat sections that caused me to take ages to finish the game. I'm certainly hoping Mirror's Edge 2 sorts that stuff out because the rest of the game was so excellent.
  21. Fantasy Life (3DS)

Saw this is another thread: http://www.thegia.com/2014/12/15/fantasy-life-devaluing-violence/ This makes me really interested in playing this game now! I love games where what can appear mundane becomes engaging, such as the gameplay loop in Animal Crossing. I feel like I ought to check this game out now! What has other people's experience of the non-violent side of this game been like?
  22. Offworld is coming to Early Access: http://forums.offworldgame.com/460877 It seems like the natural next step. I really like Soren's laying out of the reasoning for Early Access: that having a wider user base playing the game means more feedback, and additional perspectives that more people can bring. Seems like a great time to get it, if only I had the money. Oh, and the game looks awesome too! I think it's the first reveal of what the game actually looks like?
  23. Recently completed video games

I've played through the Hexcells series recently, which are an absolutely delightful set of games. They are Minesweeper type puzzles, but are made in such a way that there is no requirement to guess. They begin quite simple, but certainly the later puzzles can be very difficult, especially if you are trying to do them perfectly with no mistakes. The soundtrack is also incredibly soothing, leading to a very zen-like state when playing. John Walker of RPS absolutely loves them, and has included them in the their site's GOTY for the past two years and I can see why. Definite recommendation
  24. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

A belatedly reported thought: Last summer, I was on holiday in the Canadian Rockies. One of the things that is really interesting to me as a Brit about the place was how recent the (Western) history of the area is - only 150 years ago it was almost completely untouched and undeveloped land. In many ways it still is like that, at least compared to a lot of places I've usually been to in Western Europe. But I couldn't help reflecting on what it would be like to explore a natural place like that, where there could be something completely knew. And my main reaction was "well, it'd probably be a lot like Minecraft."
  25. The DS is ten years old.

I used to play Metroid Prime Hunters on the bus to school. Those games would get pretty ugly, and I remember being extremely annoyed that a few guys would always be the sniper guy and would always be better than me. It was a fun game though. Mario Kart was also a favourite to play with friends at any opportunity. I was about to say that it sucks that my friends wouldn't be up for that any more, and then I realised they totally would. Rad.
