  1. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

No ultra textures for ol' Two Gig Jason. Actual stab in the dark tech question: if my GPU says 4GB Total Available Graphics Memory, but 2GB Dedicated Video Memory, on which texture quality am I going to run this game?
  2. A Super Fun Quiz for everyone!

You got 'em! Number fourteen, like number nine, I knew would be instantly recognizable to anyone who played the game - but also ran the risk of not having an audience on the forum. And yeah, I've learned the hard way about including lyrics in regular music clips games, when even "diggity dog" is enough for Google to pinpoint.

    * I have no insight into the subject so I definitely don't mean to slander anyone! Just the same old story of trying to infer what one can from someone who generally stays mum on the subject - I can recount a number of trivial things Jeff has said over the years that may trouble me politically, but no, nothing super sinister.
  4. A Super Fun Quiz for everyone!

Got the right game on number two! Still looking for the song title, and eight remains anyone's guess! Does anyone have any questions about the remaining tracks that I can answer?
  5. New people: Read this, say hi.

Maybe some other jerk should stop scooping up the no-frills "Jason" username at every place I register.
  6. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Amusingly, at the moment one of the top contributors to this week's Humble Bundle, whose charitable donation is a fund which helps young women get into game development, is going by the name "#GamerGate."
  7. A Super Fun Quiz for everyone!

Excellent! Like track seventeen, six is known by a couple of names but both of these answers are acceptable. See? High school and gateway drugs doesn't mean you can't retain knowledge of game music, at the very least. All correct! And yes, it would not have felt right at all to have a music quiz on the Idle Thumbs board without some pillars of PC gaming - particularly number twelve, which is included almost as an homage to Chris Remo (and on account of being such an awesome piece of music). This is one of my personal favorite tracks on the list; not the exact title but totally acceptable! As for atte's, it's ostensibly still open, as far as I know.
  8. A Super Fun Quiz for everyone!

Well done! Very specifically caught on number one! Still looking for the track title for seven. P.S. Sorry for the double post.
  9. A Super Fun Quiz for everyone!

OK, that makes a lot more sense! Let's rewind time and aware you those half-points! We're still looking for track titles.
  10. A Super Fun Quiz for everyone!

Correct! This song goes by a bunch of names in the meta for this game for some reason, but this is certainly an acceptable one. I'm glad you specifically approve of the pictures; I was anxious about them and I thought your art was very good. I don't object to people doing a little research either, at this stage. Correct on nine and perfectly spotted on eighteen! Eleven remains unanswered, however. Unfortunately you don't have the games correct on either of those track numbers, but you're closer than you think!
  11. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

I'm not the most well-versed when it comes to modeling, so does the creator of that mod saying that, since he couldn't import anything Last of Us, he had to make Joel and Ellie from "a scratch" mean the same thing as saying he built them "from scratch"? Because, if so, this was insane at first glance but now my head is gone and there is a hole where my head was.
  12. A Super Fun Quiz for everyone!

Well done! Now I have to hope you didn't only get that because it was the longest clip!

It's things like this that helped me accept Dan in the first place, when my interest in Giant Bomb was, naturally, waning with the influx of new talent of whom I had prior knowledge. I think Dan's more innocuous ignorances were a godsend in establishing his character on the site and giving me something with which to identify him. The problems arise when, as Merus teased, Dan's benightedness touches on real issues. But, at the same time, that's par for the course with Giant Bomb - I kind of cringe whenever I sense that we're brushing up against Jeff's political views, for instance; and I can't really indict Dan for something also true of Jeff unless I'm willing to wash my hands of the entire site (which some here have done, obviously).
  14. Idle Thumbs 177: The Good Ones

La-Mulana. I haven't played it myself but it definitely has a following.
  15. A Super Fun Quiz for everyone!

Well, at the risk of genuinely undercutting Mington... As you can see, to make things slightly less arbitrary and give myself a restriction, I decided to choose games which had their North American release in the year 2000 (which I thought would be a good starting point if the first game were promising enough to continue, plus it gave me a chance to write "in the year 2000"). Twenty different titles across all major platforms. Game number twenty is an extra difficult final boss (read: dug deep from the bowels of that year's Metacritic scores). The accompanying visuals are, like atte's (although not nearly as elegantly) from each game's box art, more or less. I'll acknowledge whether or not guesses have the name of the game correct, but won't mark an answer as solved until the track title is named. Please let me know what you think of this format! If the clips are too easy, too hard; too short or too long, or balanced well! If track numbers are prominent and legible. I'm especially wondering if the images, meant to flavor the video, make the game something other than a pure music clip game, or are just ugly and distracting. Have fun! Current score: 13/20!
  16. Idle Thumbs 177: The Good Ones

Oh man, I actually went off on this topic in the Thumbs IRC chat last night. Without recounting my feelings on TotalBiscuit's extremely toxic role in GamerGate, I seriously do hope that some sort of functionality to remove the Steam Curator tab or at least (such as selecting "Not Interested" with actual games) opt out of having curators suggested for you - because it's really bringing down my user experience every time I load up the Steam storefront and have to see TotalBiscuit's shitty top hat. Theoretically, I could just go follow a half-dozen other curators in order to no longer see him as a recommendation, but with all due respect to Idle Thumbs, I know about Far Cry 2 already. By the way, not to derail this further, but the reason I started talking about TotalBiscuit last night is that, while searching for the Idle Thumbs tastemaker list, I noticed that immediately above them in follower count was this bastion of ethics and journalistic integrity.
  17. New people: Read this, say hi.

Thank you, I genuinely appreciate it. (And I like your avatar!) Jason will suit, as my dirty, shameful secret is that I'm not actually smart.
  18. New people: Read this, say hi.

So, I never really post in "new people" threads - mostly because I never join new places, but also because I'm dorky and aloof and figure nobody wants me to say hi; but as a longtime Idle Thumbs cool fan who has become increasingly seduced by the incidental talk of how good the forum is recently, I figured I'm going to make a sufficiently concerted effort at message boarding here that I might as well try to not be such a dork. I've been telling people for a while that I've wanted to post on this board for a while but feared beginning, what finally catalyzed this step was getting banned from NeoGAF last night. (Is this incriminating to admit?) According to the administrator I did not show YouTube personality Boogie due sympathy after he, as well as other alleged GamerGate proponents, had their personal information publicized by (apparently) some hostile members of SRS. I'd been arguing pretty exasperatedly in GAF's GamerGate thread for the last few weeks, and I suppose inevitably my rhetoric was bound to be seen by the wrong person as insensitive, condescending, or overbearing. I can only hope that this sad set of circumstances was what I needed to end up in an environment which might suit me better. Anyway, you can expect a lot more from ol' Smart Jason than just GAF-rejected, vindictive social justice! I have a cat (I guess you'll have to take my word on this), I have an iPhone with apps (mostly for grocery shopping), and I'm somewhat interested in that Lord of the Rings game coming out next week!
  19. Idle Thumbs 177: The Good Ones

Yeah, as a fan of the novels still compelled to follow the show, I can verify how easily Ygritte can be interpreted as an archer - to the point of thematic, vital lines of dialogue for her arc in the last season revolving around archery, arrows, and so on. An unfortunately marginalizing byproduct of the overall tonal changes to the wildlings. I hope this isn't too much of a tangent to the general discussion of the episode; obviously I find Game of Thrones talk too alluring.

Had that exact same reaction while listening to the podcast a moment ago. I like Dan as a personality but that's definitely a worldview so naïve as to be insulting - note that he wasn't just talking about the games industry in particular, he said specifically that "anyone can do anything" so long as they're persistent enough; which, I suppose, is a philosophy that goes exceedingly well with his stars and stripes pyjama bottoms.
  21. A Super Fun Quiz for everyone!

Hey, I know I'm just some jerk that only registered for this board yesterday (hello everyone, also), but I actually used to really enjoy making music clips games for my friends, so would it be cool if I had a go as well? I was inspired to make a quiz video today that I could post once a passing grade on atte's is achieved.
