  1. Minibrain Organoid is undoubtedly the name of a Star Wars Extended Universe character.
  2. I'm a little late to this episode but, man, that Final Fantasy 8 save file story prompted me to chime in. I swear there's something wrong with that game's save interface, because I did something very similar... ...to myself. I got all the way to the final final boss and was finding it really difficult. I was rebounding off it time and time again and getting frustrated, so I decided to start a brand new save file. I wanted to keep playing the game, but I wanted to be making progress, not just be stuck on a boss. I planned to come back and finish off the boss another day. Anyway, I got a couple of hours into my new game and hit a save point. I open the save menu. I pop my cursor down a few slots. Muscle memory takes over. I hit save. "Are you sure you want to overwrite this slot?" Yes. Wait. No! NOOO!! And that's how I ended up playing through Final Fantasy 8 twice. :|

Thanks, pal! But you can DEFINITELY do better.
  4. [Game Release] Switch 'N' Shoot

Right! That's exactly what I was going for! Actually I always cite Flappy Bird as an influence because I feel Dong Nguyen really got that right too. 1) Ahh yeah that makes sense. I also lock my phone to portrait but the game will override that. It's a Unity thing and unfortunately my coding skills are fairly limited (I actually use uScript, a visual scripting tool). 2) OK. I'll have a poke around if I get some free time and try out an arrow style icon. The reason for the plus icon was to indicate that it adds to your weapon power, but I get that at first glance it has a strong association with med pack iconography! Re: Google Play Games... I don't do any data tracking or anything like that. It just means you're able to upload scores to the GPG leaderboards and unlock achievements. It's totally cool to stay offline if that's what you prefer.
  5. [Game Release] Switch 'N' Shoot

I'm glad you liked it despite feeling like you were bad at it. That was actually a goal of mine! Regarding your feedback: 1) The game should default to your device's current orientation. If you turn it, the game should rotate to reflect that. Was this not working? There is also a 'screen lock' setting in the Options menu (the cog icon). 2) Any suggestions for that? Perhaps a bullet or an 'up' arrow? Those icons have actually gone through a tonne of iteration... I thought I'd hit on something that worked! There is a shield-dropper enemy type which is evasive, and also a boss. I'll say no more than that as I'd love for you to discover these things yourself.
  6. [Game Release] Switch 'N' Shoot

Thanks! I appreciate it. The laser was too enjoyable to remove! So that's why I added the big red hazard strips at the sides when you get it. It becomes particularly challenging when you face the boss... Also if you miss the next powerup you lose the laser but the hazard strips stay up, so the stakes are raised at that point. The music was actually from the Unity Asset Store, by MoppySound. I created all the other sound effects with Bfxr.
  7. Hi! I've been a reader for what, about 4 years now? In the last year or so I've made this game. Today I'm very happy to release it on Steam Early Access. It's also in beta on Google Play and itch.io. It's an arcade shmup with a twist: you only have one button which turns your ship and fires your lasers at the same time. I'd be lying if I said it wasn't influenced by Chris' musings on the granular intricacies of Spelunky and Downwell. Some other junk: Website Twitter Check it out! I'd love to know what you all think. I value the views of a Thumbsian mind highly.
  8. Aha, found the clips: http://combineoverwiki.net/index.php?title=File%3AGordead_ans17_female.ogg http://combineoverwiki.net/index.php?title=File%3AGordead_ans17_male.ogg My guess is that it was a little joke with a nudge and a wink through the forth wall, but it was perhaps later decided that it was making implications that weren't coherent with the rest of the fiction. However, I do like the idea that there was this supposed Second Coming of the Freeman who was promptly splattered by his own gravity gun mishap, revealing him to just be some guy with glasses and a goatee. I guess he was unable to tell everyone to stop calling him Gordon Freeman.
  9. Weird thing about Half-Life 2 in the context of player deaths being erased from the overarching narrative: there's a line of dialogue from the generic citizens where they say "Wait a minute... That's not Gordon Freeman!" after you die. It implies a mistaken narrator much like Price of Persia: The Sands of Time. I found it while poking around in the asset packages, but I don't recall ever actually hearing it in the game so I'm not sure whether it was unused or perhaps just has a very low chance of being triggered.
