  1. We had one place we went and saw where he called us up twice to make sure we were coming because he didn't want to waste his time and people just don't show up all the time. We got there and he didn't show up, so we called and he had rented out the place yesterday and never contacted us. I wanted to punch him through the phone so bad.

I don't know how these things go so fast, I was going to the first viewing of one place, and when I called the landlady to ask why she was late she was very apologetic about forgetting to message me saying it had been taken already.

  2. Apartment hunting in Dublin is not fun, particularly when you can turn up to a viewing and be told "Oh, there's people signing a lease for the place right now. You can still take a look if you want I guess."

That's gonna be weird at cross-waks with self-driving cars.  They'll probably have some sort of voice thing that tells us it's OK to cross?

"It's ok, just cross. You'll be perfectly safe..."

  3. I suppose local co-op seems extra alien to me as my desktop is in a cramped room and I don't even have a controller to use with it normally, I always go keyboard.

Local co-op on my PC will unfortunately not really happen until I retire the 360 and can really commit those controllers to the PC's wireless adapter.

Controllers are always the worst part about multiplayer. I've pretty much never owned more than two controllers per console I have, do people really pony up the extra $50 a piece for two more that barely ever get used?

I imagine people would usually ask their friends to bring over a controller or two for 4 player events.

  4. I want this to exist, just for the inevitable E3 2013 sequence where "In the Hall of the Mountain King" plays over scenes of Ouya renting a parking lot space and setting up a booth in front of the building, the ESA renting all the adjoining spaces and filling them with huge trucks so nobody could see the booth, Ouya renting the spaces adjoining those spaces to put up signs, etc etc.

I heard about them being in the parking lot, but not the rest. It actually sounds like a farce.

Maybe someone could be coaxed into making a fictionalised retrospective documentary, they have material for it.

  5. I finished a song today that started out being about robots n bullshit but ended up being a really personal way of trying to acknowledge that shitty times don't last forever. I dunno, it probably still sounds like robots n bullshit. FFO: ambient/experimental/progressive/electronic stuff: https://soundcloud.com/jnewham/transitory

Also holy crap there's a bunch of sweet stuff in these past couple pages. Particularly like tegan's new tumblr so far! Comic books, you guys.

I accidentally read the song title as Transistor-y, I'm sorry.

It sounded really cool though, it was a fitting atmospheric track to make asteroid sprites to.

  6. If I remember right, it was about the idea of a more free, more open platform. Indie games being so big was a new development, as was kickstarter. So the fact that such a community centric project could produce a working console for people was very enticing.

I wasn't really interested either, at the time I just felt like consoles as a whole weren't worth it but I guess my apartment is pretty cramped. I was relatively sold on the idea being interesting, and I foolishly thought that the pledges and support would transfer entirely to everyone wanting to play on their Ouya and buy games on it.

  7. It's a massive missed opportunity that the Ouya didn't feature a stretch goal for making a documentary, because there's something really amazing that could have been made, contrasting the kickstarter high with the descent into obscurity that happened post release. I feel really bad for the people who worked on it and revelled in the hype it built up only for the wave to dissipate entirely, and I'd love to get the inside perspective on it.

  8. Sant! Eller jag är dum. Alla språk är svårt

Min mor är svenska, och mitt första namn är Per, men jag bor i England och när jag var ung jag ville inte lära mig svenska (eller något).

The problem with trying to use what little Swedish I've learnt is that I feel very uncertain and self-conscious about whether it's right. I have to resist the urge to continually ask for validation.

The other problem is that I'm not very good. Still, I'm enjoying it.

Jag tycker att jag vara inte så god också. Ibland jag frågar min flickvän om min mening är rätt... men ofta hon skrattar när hon läser det...

I'm enjoying it too, I need to start finding more excuses to use it.

  9. I don't mean this to jump all over you or anybody else, but I'm beginning to find it a little odd that people are expecting a truly great Japanese game to break away from anime tropes, if only because a lot of those "anime tropes" are actually just Japanese cultural tropes, so to fault a game for them feels like faulting an American or French game for being too American or French. I mean, no one's faulting Sir, You Are Being Hunted for having too many Victorian and/or comedy-of-manners (that is to say, British) tropes.

I guess I might be saying that, if the presence of anime tropes in a game turns someone off from it, it might just be for them to admit that they don't like games from Japan  barring the subset of anime tropes in the Nintendo games that they've been playing their whole life, of course.

I get what you mean, I only mentioned that because the Thumbs said that was generally a barrier for them, and I'm not sure if you have played 999 but the cast seems to heavily play into tropes intentionally.

I think the writer intentionally played into tropes in order to undermine them later and surprise the player a bit, but doing so means that the tropes are still invoked early on.

I personally don't see it as a downside at all, I think in 999 it added a lot to the plot because of what I said above. But I've always been willing to accept the tropes if there's still something I like for me to latch on to. Whereas other people might find it a bit harder.

I assume it's mostly that they'd like to have certain aspects of how the Japanese industry approaches games but without other aspects that are less attractive (like the fanservice for example).

  10. Hello! I am an animator and have an addiction to podcasts accompanying me when I work. IdleThumbs being my favourite for the perfect blend of interesting deep discussion on video game topics and personalities I like talking about dumb funny things.

I am also an Irish resident and making a game, though I'm just doing the art and I'm way earlier in development... I started last week.

Are you active in the irish indie scene at all Timeslip or are you mostly focused on getting your game done?

    Welcome, all.

Veckodag, I'm learning Swedish at the moment. Does your name mean "weekday"?

    Välkomna!

Hej! Jag lär mig svenska också, så att jag kan prata med min flickvän. Det är svårt...

  11. For only two pages of stuff there's some crazy diverse work going on here. I'm pretty new but I can show you guys a quick mock up I did for a game I'm collaborating with a programmer on. It's pixel art and I was hoping to try do something simple but effective, I think this is a good start.

  12. I'm actually curious about this too. I've been wanting to play both of those games, and I feel like a Thumbs discussion would be the thing to finally push me to play them.

Side note: an amalgam of Molyneaux and Miyamoto would be either my favourite game developer of all time or never finish anything.

I really recommend 999 anyway, as an unusual and interesting narrative and situation to put characters in then watch what happens.

As a caveat though, I do not recommend trying to work out the ending too hard. It doesn't make total sense in a way you could unpack until the game has lead you through most of the plot. So when a friend of mine played through she hated the ending for the ways it was dumb, but because I was just along for ride I found it a really enjoyable experience.

I am also all for the Thumbs taking a look, but this is definitely not a game that breaks away from anime tropes.
