Baby Got Backstory - A trope creation thread
SuperBiasedMan replied to Bjorn's topic in Video Gaming
Despite the fact that Mystique can shapeshift into someone wearing clothes. The thing is, the point of this was not that the excuses were poorly formed, it's that people are perpetuating similar beauty ideals and oversexualisation over and over and then using plot to justify it. Like any criticism of sexism, it's not an inherent damning of the work as bad, but it's calling out a way in which the work continues the sexualisation of women but contains a backstory intended to explain the design and make it 'acceptable' as a result. -
And then, then I was going for ice cream. And there was this girl n she came over when I had my cone n stuff. I hadn't started it but she took it from me and screamed "Social justice!" and so I was just crying but everyone gave her sympathy instead.

Yeah I used the categories just to mark my interest in playing them from "need to start on this" to "maybe I'll get to these" and ending with "I regret this purchase".

Idle Thumbs 181: Rumors & Hearsay
SuperBiasedMan replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I am pretty plot focused generally, I am pretty poor at reading people's emotions both in real life and film at all. So often the layer of acting and performance fly right over my head and the real emotion of a film comes from the visual choices, the editing and the plot. That's a large part of why plot is a big part of movies for me. With the Shining in particular the tension of the plot was gone because the events were more familiar than they ought to be, since I'd seen them all before my brain just registered it as "Oh yeah, this bit where he plows the axe through a door." I still got to see the film as well crafted and I loved the cinematography in particular, but the emotions were much more muted and that felt like a second viewing thing to me, which was a shame. That is an interesting proposal. It's actually been a good half a year or so since I saw it, so it would be worth trying out to see what difference it makes. -
Twin Peaks Rewatch 2: Traces to Nowhere
SuperBiasedMan replied to Jake's topic in Twin Peaks Rewatch Episodes
I liked the conversation about Lynch cutting to shots that aren't technically connected in the sequence of events, such as the traffic light, but then found it odd that Chris talked about enjoying that, and then got caught up in the logistics of two later events. The tape of Laura with the newly added voiceover and the part where Audrey's music is turned off. I'm not sure why it matters what is the exact in universe explanation for these things is. From what I remember, Twin Peaks is generally a show that doesn't need to justify what it's showing to you all the time. It likes to break into supernatural and unsettling imagery and shots, where the viewer might not know what to make of the man crouched at the end of the bed. What's more important is that he's unsettling and creepy and causes a reaction from Mrs. Palmer. -
Idle Thumbs 181: Rumors & Hearsay
SuperBiasedMan replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
It definitely makes a difference even for not really plot based things. When I watched the Shining, it was after years of watching the Simpsons and other cultural references to the Shining, to the point that I actually knew a lot of the set pieces that were in the film and it ruined my viewing of it. It felt like I was rewatching a film I'd seen before. I knew a lot of it already and though it was clearly a good movie, a lot of the delight and enjoyment was sapped from it as a result. I'm generally spoiler averse because I'd rather just get a simple recommendation on something and discover everything for myself, then hear how others responded. If I hear other people telling me the stuff, I'm not discovering it properly and I often get to hear their response before I get to have my own. -
Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.
SuperBiasedMan replied to Tanukitsune's topic in Video Gaming
"I'm not bad, I'm just drawn that way." I think we could make a thread for this in itself, mostly because I like the idea of seeing a Baby Got Backstory thread title appearing for people who haven't been in this one. EDIT: Also how has Mass Effect come up twice without anyone mentioning the race of non gendered bisexual blue ladies that will literally mate with any species of any gender to "gather useful genes from any source." I love Mass Effect but the creativity behind the characters is the worst. -
I'm not sure if reunions are even a big thing here, but the idea of it seems weird to me because I feel like I'd turn up to see a bunch of people I knew years ago to say "Oh hey, remember me? Yeah, I'm not the person you remember any more. So how are things?" As far as I can tell, the appeal seems to be that you get to see if other people have changed or just stayed largely the same. (I say this as someone who did get on fine with people from my school but didn't retain any of them as friends since then)

Found out I kept dieing in Dragon Age: Origins because I hadn't been equipping my characters at all. So naturally I downloaded a mod to automatically win any fight so I can skip through all the combat easily. Mods fix everything.

It's animeted so it must be an anime.

I think at £2 you could give the PC port a go even. It's absolutely a mess but I was able to play for a good few hours before bugs overwhelmed me and it's a worthwhile experience while you can get it going. Then I recommend watching a let's play from the point you stopped, when the game fully craps out on you.

Where to Find Game Assets (Audio/Textures/Models/Etc)
SuperBiasedMan replied to Dinosaursssssss's topic in Game Development
They instantly want me to return to a space game I was making with someone... -
I had a quick gander and it does include stuff that Steam separates in your library from the main game like Betas or multiplayer versions of a game that are launched separately from the main game.

Idle Thumbs 181: Rumors & Hearsay
SuperBiasedMan replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Sorry, I didn't mean to disparaging about the price. I was mostly remarking on it cause it was more than I expected from a mobile game (more than I've paid for any game in a good while). I have the game on my wishlist, and I'm just waiting for a more affluent period of my life. -
Idle Thumbs 181: Rumors & Hearsay

For anyone else wondering, yes King of Dragon Pass is on Android. Unfortunately at ten dollarsish I should probably wait on buying it. -
I'm willing to accept Serial as feeling like Lost. A really interesting and fun rollercoaster ride that I'm slowly realising will end abruptly before that big exciting finish. Also I should link the Radiotopia kickstarter in here. Radiotopia is an independent podcast network, started by Roman Mars of 99% Invisible, a fantastic podcast about the thoughts behind architecture and design that affect our lives but we barely even notice. The shows on it are all interesting in their own way... to varying degrees. (I find the Truth's writing pretty meh, but it's interesting sometimes). They've already hit their target, but if they can get a total of 20,000 backers Hover will give them a sponsorship of $25,000, so they're looking for any amount donated just to increase the size. So at least try out one of the shows, and if you like it you could kick in a dollar to help the network build and expand. I particularly recommend 99% Invisible, Love + Radio and Benjamin Walker's Theory of Everything (pretty sure I already recommended all of them already).

Bad (inconsistent) art in superhero comics is certainly nothing new.

Is there a TLD for .shit? Cause if there is you ought to register variousanimals.shit pretty quick. -
"Please help us share this post" I feel for them.

If it was an action for good PR that largely masked ongoing harassment, then yes it's not. That actually makes the donation terrible because it goes towards facilitating much worse things than the donation would help to curb. And whether or not you think it masked harassment, it is absolutely true that the donation was to make GG look good. Why else would a movement do it?

It looks so incredible, I love how even with a 1bit colour system he has some smooth ass animations in it. I'm terrible though and achieved literally nothing in the demo. I had no clue where to start because wandering around hitting space on everything seemed to yield me nothing but nice hand animations.

Idle Thumbs 181: Rumors & Hearsay

Considering Pixar's currently embroiled in a big wave fixing scandal where they colluded with other studios to keep down employee wages, I wouldn't be inclined to call them an employee focused company. They work off the pedigree. People want the status of working on the biggest animated movies, and they can accept a lot to do it. -
Idle Thumbs 181: Rumors & Hearsay
SuperBiasedMan replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I think the whole hipster label works if you're not saying that the Thumbs are ironically enjoying a work but are just not of the same opinion as mainstream media. The Thumbs devoted as much time to 80 Days as they did to the Evil Within. It's definitely an angle to the Thumbs that I enjoy. A good example is actually Viscera Cleanup Detail. Another gaming podcast I listened to was repeatedly making fun of the idea while one of them explained why it was compelling. It felt half like they just didn't have any interest in something so weird but also half like they felt obligated to mock how ungamey it was, as a gaming podcast. Idle Thumbs always feel like you're just willing to engage with how you felt about something, the good, the bad and the goofy. That means you'll both laugh at the AAA stuff when it's due and then also discuss smaller, weirder or obscure things because they might give you some new experience that you found noteworthy. -
Idle Thumbs 181: Rumors & Hearsay

Every time Nick reappears on the podcast he has an amazing story. This week's DotA deduction did not disappoint. I was already eagerly awaiting an Android version of 80 Days and now I'm even more interested. Having done research, it's on the way for some unannounced date.
