  1. Life

I found out about a job with the animation studio that made the Secret of Kells. They want someone with experience both of animation and coding to work on creating an art application for them. I am immensely interested and entirely unsure of whether I fit with what they want. Obviously I still apply and leave the job of judging my application up to them, but I'm just not even sure how I can present myself well. I learned this programming language when I was 10, so I mostly know basics from that but I can catch up pretty easily. I gotta bone up on this and then apply, so I'll see how that goes...
  2. General Video Game Deals Thread

I think it's the eBay model. Where they increment your bid above the one just under yours and give you back the extra gems. So in that scenario they'd take 20 *I think*.
  3. Idle Thumbs 188: A Refined Baby

I think usually people do that if they wanna hang out and see a movie but the motivation is more in being social than in the act of seeing the film. Also I don't know if other people have this problem too but it's hard enough organising groups of people to coordinate on times as it is without also having to match with a movie's schedule.
  4. General Video Game Deals Thread

One copy is up at a time, as far as I can tell the games have a hundred copies each. So if less than a hundred people bid on a game, they all win. But I don't think that would happen because I imagine that people will start hoovering up games with card potential to farm gems to pour back into other games. (or just to sell cards).
  5. General Video Game Deals Thread

Yeah I basically skimmed through my wishlist searching things and putting 1 gem bets on anything under a thousand, cause I figure I can watch them all that way and make real bids later. It is very bizarre, and also makes me feel a bit skeevy because somewhere it's mentioned that devs donated these games? (Even if they didn't, games being further devalued etc.) EDIT: It is also exceedingly bizarre that the rounds all last 45 minutes exactly... except the first that lasts 2 1/2 more days?

I'm re-recommending this as one of my favourites, particularly because the latest is an extra long 2+ hour episode where he re-broadcasts segments taken from his books that clearly demonstrate different forms of bias. So you can listen through and obtain a good repertoire of biases. ...though admittedly that means after the main episode that lasts around 30 minutes, the rest of the show is less representative of how each episode works.
  7. I Had A Random Thought...

Some of my friends are trying to organise a group to go see the new Hobbit movie. I wish people more readily accept not affording things as a reason to not go, because then I also have to say that I'm not interested in seeing the movie they already know they'll all love.
  8. Serial - The Podcast

Oh man I actually missed that at the time, but it's pretty terrible in retrospect since she has just done an episode where people were outright profiling Adnan, she doesn't stop to think that maybe the parents had a good idea in the back of their head rather than "oh wacky, guess some parents in your area are overprotective"?
  9. Serial - The Podcast

I think this is what you're getting at, but I did find it very troubling to hear her say that she didn't think that prejudice was an element in the case. I was waiting for her to say that after investigating she realised it was a factor, but instead she just detailed out the ways the prejudice had affected things and yet she seemed to think that it wasn't quite racism? It was skirted a bit, which felt weird. I kind of read it like she didn't want to tackle the can of worms involved with trying to explain how people can be subconsciously racist but maybe I'm being optimistic about her treatment of it. In a somewhat related field, I feel like even more than Adnan, the story that has arisen is of how the justice system is a flawed mess. Partly because some of these things are really hard to do and in other ways because serious problems go unchecked. But ultimately it's horrifyingly fascinating to hear how such a serious consequence can arise from a system that really is not robust. I'm not that surprised that this can happen, but having a 10 hour discussion of one individual being put through it really does hammer the point home.
  10. Thumb Fortress 2

I agree, and there was an implication that this update was supposed to introduce new things, but I think that the new things were instead added ages back, with the few new weapons and the 2 beta maps. Plus the duck thing is a terribly transparent money printing device. :/
  11. Thumb Fortress 2

Basically, TF2 released a 15 minute short which featured a visual gag with a shipping container full of ducks that later exploded. Now when you play and people get killed, they drop some ducks. If you have a new item called the Duck Journal that you can buy from the store then you can pick up these ducks and increase your 'duckstreak' as well as level up the Duck Journal. Which are just bragging rights stats, like a killstreak.
  12. I did take specific note that the Giant says "You can think of me as a friend." To me that implies "We're not really friends or even allies, but you are a useful piece to me in this game." Exactly how much of this is mutual benefit and how much is the Giant using Cooper is up for debate though. Also when reading people talking back on this episode, I found myself thinking back on my first viewing and it really didn't read as a reveal or anything. We have previously seen that man appear in strange, unreal visions. What does this sequence tell us in a show where we're often averse to taking things we see as 'real'? And even if we take them as literally what happened, it doesn't really mean anything since we don't know who he is. At least not yet. I also do remember really loving this episode, because it was really cementing the unique weirdness that I could expect from the show. BUT this is the opinion of someone who didn't have to wait at all to get more episodes and didn't actually get put off at all by
  13. Cartoons!

Sorry people who haven't seen it (go watch it)
  14. Serial - The Podcast

The choice of pacing was definitely odd, because all the more factual seeming stuff came up front and now there's been a lot of filling gaps or other themes she's put together. I guess since the edits are real time she might not have realised that these themes had less to them. Or possibly it was a deliberate choice to hook people in very early. I've entirely enjoyed the last few though, it hasn't felt like they were unnecessary or stretched out to me. They've still expanded my knowledge of the whole situation pretty well. I think this 12 episode length makes sense, even if it's a bit longer than I would've expected when I started listening.

  17. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

I enjoyed Hearthstone quite a bit but I ditched it because I was totally uninterested in building decks and it seemed like any loss I had involved getting totally stomped. I would love a mode that's almost a puzzle game, in that decks are prescribed but unknown so you can only make plays and judgements based on your current hand, the cards that are down and your knowledge of the general tactics of the game.

  19. Plug your shit

I like it, looks good to me! Though it does look a little off perspectivewise, if you look at the waist up it seems like an angled view down on the character, but then the bottom half of them doesn't bear out that angle. If that makes sense? If not, I can go through it with a picture in a PM or something.
  20. 2015: Year of the PS3... and Back to the Future II

I entirely thought that the point was that it'd be Pikmin. My brain entirely skipped the part where Pokémon fit in there. My 2015 year of the PS3 is pretty uncertain? I'm going to be finishing a programming course and then... working? Freelancing in a much more profitable field? Games!? Whatever it is, I hope I'm financially more stable. I also may be moving to an entirely different country, so there's that too. Also if all goes to plan I'll have done the one game a week challenge to completion by the end of November. Busy year.
  21. Parable of the Polygons

This is fantastic and I absolutely agree (tried the same thing) I think this is ALSO why games/interactive media are great at demonstrating the result of a system's behaviour. You can use a procedural system to demonstrate something that you didn't intend but is an equally valid point. This is the kind of thing I'd like to see more of in games and also to put into what I make. I do wonder, would this have more success as a game where it includes this stuff as a theme/plot/message as opposed to directly communicating that you're making this point. I often think that the people who most need to be convinced of these issues are the most likely to turn away when they can see it's explicitly making a statement. But maybe they'd take more from it if they're playing a systemic game about the poor triangle and its relationships with the other shapes. (yeah obviously it still needs to be a well made point)
  22. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

Yeah I'd rather go for sports or some corporate thing, something less war-y... I did experiment by doing this on tinder. Swiped almost every female profile and only the occasional dude. I am still matching with more dudes than women.
  23. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

The DS emulator is pretty good? Though also I'm not sure if those qualify as good on those terms, cause there's still a lot of unnecessary waffle in their speech even if the plot and characters are actually good.

Bah, sorry. I figured after this many episodes it had probably come up but thought I should say anyway.
