I got a few little games called pid, Angvik and 911 First Responders. (I know little about any of them but they seemed charming enough to bid nonexistent currency on) The sniping bids were worse than I thought, so I had to abandon some others I was eyeing to pile on masses of gems to these. This was a pretty fun event but if it ever happens again I'm planning to just throw all my gems at one game and then ignore it, I spent way too long invested in this process. EDIT: Also if anyone wants a stray 514 gems, hit me up soon!

It's kind of funny we have a must see TV thread but not really a games equivalent. I was thinking about starting it but then I thought that it might be even more divisive. TV is TV, you just have to sit and watch it. But if someone says DOTA 2 is a must play game, you're implicitly obligating someone to familiarise themselves with a gameplay system they might not care for at all. And with plenty of games, the gameplay is almost all of what you can get out of it (particularly because if it's pure story or art you want, YouTube exists) so if you don't want to engage with that element the recommendation becomes pretty useless. Admittedly with TV 'must-see' is kind of... loose as a term since obviously it doesn't mean that everyone must actually see it but it definitely gets more watered down in games when a percentage of people are turned off when the first few words you use indicate a playstyle they're not into.

I'll suggest some less likely ones to crop up. Over the Garden Wall is a really great cartoon of 10 episodes lasting 10 minutes each, so you could also think of it like a heavily sectioned movie. It's got a really strong sense of its overall aesthetic and tone that oozes through the art and writing. It's also really not a dumbed down show, in the sense that they don't feel obligated to lay everything out for you at the start, they just drop you right in and let the show start. Also it's gorgeous. An entirely different tact, but if you like deconstructing TV writing, then Heroes is wonderful. It has a strong first season, then a second season marred by the writers strike of the time. The second series ended up floundering and meandering a bit, and the show only got worse and more convoluted from there. By the end of it I was fascinated with what would happen next because it was usually holding my interest for the wrong reason. It's not really a so bad it's good show as much as it's so bad it's fascinating. So I think it only counts as must watch if you're a dork like me who constantly thinks about the structure of writing and is willing to sink time on the show (not that you have to pay that much attention).

It was also basically said (albeit indirectly) in the Spelunky thread on these forums I think?

I loved the mutiny plot, it was literally the turning point of my game too so it just hit so perfectly. I do wonder a bit if they sometimes not occur, they seem like such a long route to have only the simple options of things to do. Also I am terrible for entirely missing mechanics. In 80 Days I didn't realise that the converse option was meant for gathering information from people about potential routes or extra info about towns. I thought it was always about talking to Fogg and decided to refrain from it constantly until the mutiny when I wanted to ask him what the hell he was thinking. And then in Crossy Road I took a good few games before realising that I could actually backtrack, not just hope forward and slide left and right. Does anyone else find that the left and right swipes sometimes read as hops or am I just doing it wrong?

It is also (or was, when I got it) not the first result when you search the exact name of it.

Study programming, 3D graphics, or neither?
SuperBiasedMan replied to EmperorNortonI's topic in Game Development
I agree with itsamoose, but given that you do want to do a course I would say it's important to determine which you think you'd get a lot out of in an educational setting. You could try self teaching other disciplines, but if you mostly thrive in education, maybe the thing you're weaker in and would need to be pushed with is a good thing to do the course itself in. This is kind of tenuous advice because I'm essentially saying "choose what's right for you", but in a very concrete sense. Determine which field you think you'd learn more from in an educational institute. -
Twin Peaks Rewatch 9: May the Giant Be With You

No problem, also I forgot to say! Excellent choice to include robots, they are underrepresented.

I think you could use more broad categories, personally I think having 'films' as a general one would make for a goofy mish mash of different influences. You could still just have it as well as the other ones anyway. Also it seems to be oddly slow for what seems like a simple thing to do, is that an intentional thing to give a pause for the user as if the generator is thinking?

Twin Peaks Rewatch 9: May the Giant Be With You
SuperBiasedMan replied to Jake's topic in Twin Peaks Rewatch Episodes
To me the implication of that is that Cooper is the one who has travelled to a new a place, ie. the semi magical place where the Giant resides. -
I accidentally beat 80 Days immediately. I was trying to be the Jeevesiest valet and always attend to my master, astutely plan routes and spend time frugally. Naturally when I arrogantly thought I was way ahead at the 50 day mark that's when it all went to pot, but I had such a good start I could still hold it together even when the Jeeves facade crumpled and I failed a mutiny then lost a fight with a boxer. I even got an ending where Fogg says I was a great Valet, so obviously I now need to replay where I'm a shitty valet that wants to see the world and explore more than be on time.

To extend the criticism of "people need a voice", anyone with access to an internet device has a massive voice these days. Social media is built around that premise. If all social media colluded to prevent the discussion of a specific topic/ from a group or individual, then their voice would actually be hampered in a way that matters, relative to others. EXCEPT you can still just make your own website and have it instantly more accessible than any random person some decades ago could dream of.

In other time consuming news, 80 Days is now on Android too! This is in the regular Play Store.

Trying our best to get some low popularity games for free (aside from the time investment).

My actual Christmas is coming this weekend! My immediate family is so large that half my siblings need to spend Christmas day with their spouse's family/with their own children. So we just divert to a weekend earlier. Also this year marks a year where I've visited my parents so much less than normal that the prospect of getting to go home is actual something I'm looking forward to, rather than a routine appearance to see them. ...I should probably go do my shopping soon.

I've looked it up before and heard so much conflicting information I'm suspicious that explaining it might just be an exercise in confirmation bias and superstition reinforcement because of how little sense it seems to make. EDIT: They also just added the ability for you to see what rank you are even if you're below the top 100 bidders. They added it literally as I was increasing some bids.

I did a minor version of that Bjorn's spreadsheet and just took a screenshot from auction 3 of the games I'm interested in and then keep comparing back, the prices are dropping quite a lot. I think I can spread a few thousand gems over some obscure games and clean up some of them as long as there isn't a massive movement to hoover up low bid games. But I think that probably will happen with any of the ones that spawn cards. Also speaking of cards, I have a bunch of games running just to farm them, and mostly I get one maybe two at a time. Just now I got 12 at once. I do not understand the spawning system at all. EDIT: Got another 8 while I wasn't looking.

Oh god I'm going to try and make it work again, aren't I?
-
I'm already seeing almost the ones I've marked dropping below 10,000 gems so I can probably get at least a few with the gem sack I bought for the 50 cent I earned in trading cards that I farmed from old games I never played that I bought from previous steam sales.

Idle Thumbs 188: A Refined Baby

Give im a pair of handguns and he'll be freakin unstoppable! -
Actually I don't even know for sure if the auction time is localised to a user's country. My steam says round 1 ends tomorrow at 3:45pm, is it the same for everyone? It seems like such a weird time to end.

Actually it probably is a subsidy thing. Arts Grants/loans from the EU can be given on the basis that the money is paid to EU people. Because economy. Thanks JL! Hopefully they won't mind if I'm a zombie thumb...

They say that due to employment restrictions they can only hire people from within the EU? Confused by that, I'll just have to get the job for your sake, so I can then investigate further.
