I always skip the cookie bit because as fun as the idea is, I know I rarely get time to bake stuff I want to so it's just going to be a recurring reminder to bake. That episode was really perfect for that. I feel like there's a weird atmosphere online right now of thinking about how to tackle the problem of online behaviour that's seeping through into mainstream discussion and stories. Or maybe that's been a constant clear presence and I'm a dummy for not seeing it sooner, just like with the harassment itself.
  2. The Stanley Parable's unachievable achievement is a specific wink from a game about game nonsense. If they had achievements like that in some unassuming game it would be way more effective in a weird way. EDIT: Also I guess that means I was wrong about Tim but right that all creators are beholden to the judgement of their audience forever. I have clearly not seen said video, what does he mean about it being the wrong choice but with a good argument for it?
  3. Tim being insistent on tank controls is an odd thing to me. Not because I think they're terrible, I have yet to play any Grim Fandango version, but just because it's a pretty unanimous complaint I've heard and yet he stands by his original choice. Everything I've heard, seen and felt in general production says that it's incredibly hard to evaluate your work when you've been deep inside the project for its entire construction but you're explicitly making it for people who have the opposite experience, only seeing the surface at least at first. So it seems like a lot of people who make stuff are highly receptive to criticism and try to resolve people's issues. That all just makes it so weird that Tim has not budged on his position, I wonder if that's a conscious decision to not be easily swayed or is it just his instinctual response. Also I was thinking about how it'd be great to have a game that's just a normal game but full of achievements that are theoretically possible but ludicrous to expect to achieve any of them. But then I realised it would be a lightning rod for the worst behaviour from people who care about achievements, both for them harassing you, criticising your broken achievements system and for people destroying their lives endlessly searching for each achievement trigger.

Max Feminism is a great dumb action name for a ridiculous over the top action hero who fights the growing cult of Meninism.

If Psychology is a science you're looking for, I always recommend You Are Not So Smart. The combination of good hosting and interesting learning sells it well.
  6. The tiny moment at the start where James and Donna have a little laugh to themselves about Leland's wacky golfing is such a good reminder of how everyone responds to Leland's goofiness. He's just a quirky funny guy, almost no-one in town knows what's going on underneath so they just laugh at his antics, but this is (at least on first viewing) the first time we've seen him like this after our peek inside Leland. I also totally forgot there was a gap between the audience reveal and the investigation catching Leland. I was compressing the time in my head so that last week I thought it was all one episode, then I expected this week to almost instantly begin with Cooper seeking out the real killer. I loved the scene with Pete gleefully playing Catherine's message. That was a pretty functional scene that could've easily just been him saying "Oh buddy, you're in for it now." But Pete actually just enjoys it so much, true to his character.

I heard that story on a podcast recently and thought it was a nice anecdote that tells you about a possible view of a problem but it is not very useful or safe advice.

Stereotypes aren't, but the Irish one? Yeah that is.

New friends! I am pretty used to it because I've lived here all my life. (Also I just walk) Also you put a single programming job on your linkedIn and already I have a recruiter in Edinburgh claiming he can offer me a job. I never thought I'd be worth scamming before...
  11. I Had A Random Thought...

Already resorted to buying cheap shoes in order to not have ones with big holes in them for a new job but Noted! I will look into whether or not I can get these vegan and in my country. Also how the hell is 50-60 cheap for shoes?! My cheap shoes are the €15-20 kind. And if I REALLY wanted to be cheap I could find a €4-6 pair.

Clearly I sped too quickly through all the potato posts in an Irish haze, apologies Mangela.
  13. Life

Work feels super weird. I'm actually in a position driven by my own initiative more than a set load of the Work I Must Get Through. I'm also the only person in the office who can do what I do, which relates to a weird new ephemeral responsibility of representing what's reasonable to achieve to my boss since he doesn't really know that well. Of course that also means that if I can't/don't do something, it just doesn't get done. But also my boss is 29, I went to the pub with workmates three times last week and also I set off the office alarm yesterday when trying to get my phone charger. So luckily I'm not being made to feel too grown up about things.

I leave for a few days and suddenly people are all over potatoes. You all missed the perfect combination of mashing them to put on top of a shepherd's pie and then putting them in the oven so they can be cooked until crispy. Also anyone who doesn't like cooking needs to actually engage with making food and try making some simple tasty food. Even just cut up and (optionally) peel chips to stick in the oven with some rosemary on them, they are undoubtedly better than any chips I have ever had anywhere else.

"Not available on your device" Yeah pretty sure that means it's not for my country.
  16. "You Deserve An Orgy Today!" ought to be a presidential campaign slogan. It would win it for a third party and end the bipartisan rut. I have a genuine question/suggestion for the future Queen of England. If she was the last that could be tracked down, then once she killed every other person above her wouldn't she be the only possible Queen. And so when she inevitably commits suicide from remorse with no heirs then the Monarchy in England no longer has a bloodline and dies out?
  17. I Had A Random Thought...

I think I use too many exclamation points online!
  18. CK2 Succession Game

I'm trying it out now, since I have a free evening! In the next few hours I'll either have had a good first session or let you all know to carry on ahead. EDIT: It works! Surprisingly turning off those trees helps a lot. Expect an update about my early years a ruler soon!
  19. Self-imposed challenge modes

I did that exact same thing in New Vegas, it's surprisingly easy to punch out a robot. Also I loved that system in TWEWY but really sucked at the game, did you beat the whole actual final boss like that?
  20. Feminism

I entirely agree with this I just think she chose to argue but missed what I felt was the point. I don't think I'm totally right, just voicing an opinion on that response.
  21. Feminism

I don't really think it's as bad as the initial poster said but I do think there is a criticism there and I think is not a self critical considered response. I mean, I constantly second guess my own thoughts and readily notice all sorts of factors that I didn't think of the first time round. So maybe I'm just very open to all round criticism and expecting too much of others but I think she responded to the wrong sentiment there. To me it reads as a list of excuses and exceptions that fails to address an overall pattern within the work. You could totally say the pattern's not an issue and make that argument but to deny that pattern is disingenuous to me.

Is that coffee meat bean app very explicitly dating and not friend focused? If it existed here it'd be fun to try out. I've really not been valuing my tinder matches, and the super casualness goes both ways. I think for the first time this week someone kept coming back to talk again, which surprised* me. Though I also wonder if the good conversations that I've had and just ended were meant to have me asking them out as the full stop or was it just that I prolonged the conversation longer than it should've lasted and they humoured me out of politeness. * And by surprised I mean surprised me, then cycle between > anxiously thinking they might particularly like me and revealing I'm just in for friends might really disappoint them and > realising that they're probably just like that on tinder and I'm not magically drawing them in or anything. Oh look, a double whammy of me displaying the interplay of arrogance and insecurity, that's a good introduction to me as a person. Maybe I should put it in my tinder profile...

I unfortunately have to sidestep that whole intelligent discussion for a tangental one. Nothing immunises anyone from prejudices and biases. Allegri may do some great feminist work but that doesn't prevent her from potentially setting the cause back too with other things she does. Your personal mileage varies on the actual depictions there, and personally I do see them all as being a bit feminised, when I think it's best to provide ranges of masculinity and femininity in all genders. Sure there are plenty worse examples available but that doesn't invalidate any of the less harmful cases. I'm more critical of how Allegri respond, with a numbered list of why they're equal enough and it's not a big deal. All artistic choices deserve scrutiny, especially if someone identifies something that might be harmful in it. Especially if you didn't see that harmful thing when doing it. Sure you had other reasons in your head when deciding those things but you never really know your own though process fully. Everyone is loaded with a lifetime of baggage that pushes and pulls perception around the place, so you can't honestly say for sure "No I only made her blush because her beaker is smoking and that's embarassing", you have to acknowledge that maybe your brain figured her blushing made more sense than if a guy did and you just didn't catch the assumption that time. Also "I don't hate ____" is the worst phrase. Systemic oppression and subconscious bias are not about hating groups of people so you decide to subjugate them, It's all about how your views of those groups has been imprinted. I would very much not say I hate women, I have more female friends than male. But there's no way I could claim that as a badge to say that it's not misogynist of me to be more sceptical of women's input or dismissive of their experiences. That applies to everyone ever. A lot of people don't hate their social groups but it certainly wont stop you oppressing yourself.

Oh yeah, my implication was more That iOS is too closed a system for them to legally offer any apps for it without explicit cooperation from Apple.
