The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS
SuperBiasedMan replied to Henroid's topic in Video Gaming
Someone correct me if I'm wrong but there are publishers that specifically mandate they want a game to achieve a certain Metacritic score, they make it a particular goal. In one way that's an unfair metric to Base assessment of a game on (you can't just be popular, you must be popular among the gaming press across the board), it also makes me wonder if it's possible that it does have that significant a sway over the market if publishers care so much. It feeds into the GamerGate idea of determine whether a game is good or not, which is highly reductionist and makes any kind of different game at risk of being overlooked for its untraditional nature. -
I think SmackJeeves is a 50 Shades Fansite.

Idle Thumbs 198: Missing Molyneux
SuperBiasedMan replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I loved manuals as a kid. Frequently me and my brother would buy games while on a shopping trip and we'd read the booklet that came with the came as an appetiser to the real game, to prepare us for what it'd be like and get a bit of a taste of it. As we got older and the manuals got thinner it bummed us out, we'd get just some controls and then the box art synopsis was all so it kinda lost its point. And these days I find steam games and just play them without bothering to properly find out what genre/tone/setting they are. -
Yeah I agree, you can't hold people responsible for assumed rationalisations you made instead of actually assessing the situation.

I personally think implicit promises are categorically worse because they're still persuasive marketing arguments but in the aftermath people don't have concrete reasons to point to how they were deceived. I also think it's not fair to say Molyneux had no intention of delivering things, he wanted to release the game and make it a success. There's no way he would devote years of his life to a project if he didn't intend to finish it. He knows he asked for too little money, but that's clearly a recurring kickstarter theme even with successful kickstarters.

I have played a lot of games in my time, but I only ever played games at my house, I never really went to friends' places to sample alternate consoles' offerings. As a result I started off playing some very lowkey mac shareware games, went to the SNES, the PS1, PS2, Gamecube, PS3 and then just hung around on the PC since then. I have missed plenty of games that are taken as the common experience of gaming, such as: Doom, Quake, Literally Every Pre "The Walking Dead" adventure game (except Broken Sword 2), All the Halos, Mario Bros. 2 and 3 and all the World games, Ocarina of Time, Half Life 2 System Shock 2,. That's just a quick sampling of games I know that (some) people consider integral gaming classics but have not broken into my life for one reason or another. I want a thread for people to make the case for games they think are unmissable. I mean literally unmissable, not just "Oh yeah it's really good". I want games that people will feel bad over me missing out on them. Fair warning, aging games will be a bit of an issue. I started Half Life 1 a while back and though it was enjoyable, the clunkiness of it did make me really appreciate the difference between control of it and modern FPS games. I didn't think the game was bad or worthless as a result but it certainly contributed to me getting distracted from the game and setting it aside.

I changed my avatar right as Patrick R did, I want the timing on record even if his is much better.
-
Did you do that?

I don't even know Urkel, so you'll always just be mildly zany kid to me.

This is why I never change profile pictures anywhere. I've seriously had this one going for years actually.

Shopping on the way home is a wonderful privilege, especially if you use a lot of fresh vegetables to make your food. The concept of car culture is maddening to me, it would put me off living in a lot of america because aside from hassle and everything else I just really like walking to places and actually being in the world instead of confined designated human living spaces. Though I totally recognise the distinction is relatively dumb since I walk in towns and cities, not on wild trails or anything. Also I'm a big baby and hope that I'll never have to learn how to drive. Related to me being an irresponsible baby, my phone is now paralysed in its bottom third. Literally the exact spot where the app launcher is to let me open my whole big list of apps, even the one that lets me use my phone as a phone (which I wanted to do today, funnily enough), I destroy phones, it's something I'm going to actually take better care with and not be so reckless. But as an added safe guard I want to ask. Does anyone know if there's any way to discern what phone brands/models are actually durable? Any time I try to google this, I get endless articles about battery life, lifespan and durability but I've never found a reliable repository of how long phones last. So if anyone has a lead on that or just anecdotal recommendations I am all ears.

If anyone is disappointed by that being gone, I had one too.

Twin Peaks Rewatch 18: Dispute Between Brothers
SuperBiasedMan replied to Jake's topic in Twin Peaks Rewatch Episodes
This would stand up better if TP's authorial voice said was critical of the statement or if the real darkness was made clear to the audience, but really that line came at the end of an episode that did its best to make Bob a boogeyman and avoid confronting the dark meaning behind everything that happened. -
Which is a series of photos depicting people's naked thumbs.

Square Enix has a new humble bundle featuring Hitman Absolution, Supreme Commander 2 and Hitman Go for whatever you want. Over the average for Thief, Murdered: Soul Suspect and Deus Ex: Human Revolution. (and more coming, apparently) $15+ for Tomb Raider and Sleeping Dogs. Hitman Go is TOTALLY worth it if you have an Android phone. You already know the Thumbs loved it so that should be enough to at least peek into that bundle. Though if anyone wants Supreme Commander or Deus Ex then my copies are up for grabs.

Today in work we were talking about me going on a trip to the other side of the country to help set up another studio to use the same system I created in this one. This feels weird and official, I'm even gonna stay in a hotel. What are these people doing trusting me like this, I suggested a nude selfie thread on a forum earlier today. I can't be trusted with this.
-
Why don't we have a nude selfie thread?

I hope the next step is a special portable Wii U carrier for airplane use.

That's interesting and I suspect you're right. It's complicated, but as much as I dislike capitalism I do feel like the investor would have more right to get annoyed because I just don't think that people who kickstarter the campaign have that much stake in it in the grand scheme of things. But maybe I'm being harsh, I've viewed every kickstarter as a risky venture with a potential small reward so it's odd for me to imagine someone getting so heavily invested in a kickstarter.
-
Do you think people would like it more in that case? I'm thinking exactly the opposite, people with no personal monetary stake in the project would just see a money obsessed asshole chewing out Molyneux because the investor isn't rolling in money. (I don't think that's a fair response but I think that's the way the winds of bias would blow)
-
I dunno that statement doesn't read like he thinks it's a mistake he made. It reads like Molyneux doesn't see the issue with how he operates.

So that was fun! I wasn't expecting my life to be cut so short but that's what a life fraught with illness gets you. It was a lot of fun. I enjoyed having such a specific focus with a character compared to my general playstyle of expanding at all costs. I look forward to possibly playing again if the loop around permits! For the next person, here's your file to play as Duchess Elisa, voted into power ahead of my own children... https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B466kqax_gDERzM5WlVRczJIR00/view?usp=sharing

I appreciate the offer Bjorn! But it would require proper repairs even with a hinge provided, it's a weird internal hinge and the plastic cover has entirely come off.
-
My laptop overheats easily, is terribly slow with playing video or any relatively taxing effort and has a gammy hinge on it. Or, had a gammy hinge. Said hinge has now just broken entirely, so one side of the laptop is just hanging, supported by the other hinge. Which I assume won't last long when it's supporting the whole monitor on its own. I'm rethinking whether it's worth actually getting a new computer given the above listed problems.... and also right when the hinge snapped I saw that the corner of the screen is just dark, like there's a shadow over it. Which I assume has to do with the monitor cable now being exposed from the area with the broken hinge. Now would be a good time to know if I have a job at the end of next month.
