  1. Other podcasts

I was about to ask how you find a podcast Co host and then realised how that made me sound like a sad little 10 year old boy.

Does anyone know if there's good writings about how and why people are hostile to their categorisation of the world being challenged? It seems like that's part of transphobia, people don't want to accept that there is more to gender than a binary system. Not always that it's just hard to grasp, it seems like an affront to some. I'm curious if there's been a good exploration of that.
  3. I Had A Random Thought...

I stand corrected! I knew that Beauty and the Beast was nominated and served as the impetus to make the category but I didn't know that Up and Toy Story still got nominations.
  4. Recently completed video games

    I wont begrudge you that!

ze = he/she zir = his/her This isn't really selling the particular words well. I usually use 'they' to refer to a person that I don't know and thus can't be aware of their gender. It does feel distancing though (I'd argue less so than an exotice fabricated word but that's just my gut reaction) so I usually try to avoid gendered pronouns. I'm generally pretty good at it? I learned long ago to not say people's names that much so it's less conspicuous when I don't remember and intentionally avoid saying it so I think I just adapted that practice to pronouns too. I could stand to be more conscious of it though.

Well I personally don't have a revulsion to spending towards forwarding certain ethics. I do try to look at socially progressive aspects to something I'm considering paying for or suggesting someone else checks it out. I'm a vegan and a significant part of my vegan intention is to support foods that abstain from animal products. Whether it's as an intentionally labelled vegan product or cookies that just don't contain dairy. The cynicism I'm responding with is that I don't think that's something worth doing based on the marketing of the media trying to push key progressive details. "Thor is a woman now!" doesn't read as terribly progressive to me. I am all for supporting something if I've looked into and actually gotten the impression that it's progressive but a marketing stunt doesn't feel the same to me. It should be noted I don't read comics (except webcomics) so I am not making an informed judgement on Thor or any others, but what this thread has told me leaves me unconvinced. That said, if you are going to just buy some comics anyway I do think there's value in deciding that you should try for the most progressive you can find even if they're just token efforts. I just think it's worth being mindful of how much more can be done even if you like what they've done so far.

JP isn't in danger, I still need a podcast that's actually about games.
  8. Other podcasts

I used to have masses of time for podcasting, but now that I have a job that involves lots of word typing I've been listening to music instead so I have to catch up on podcasts... or start culling them again.
  9. I Had A Random Thought...

Also if they were part of best film animated movies would never win and likely not be nominated.

Bah, yes I'm sorry. I don't think I have enough conscious awareness of the gender plethora. I probably need to do some media education to make it more inherent rather than something I correct myself with. Technically yes companies can do good work, and certainly some do and some try to. But the issue is that the primary goal of capitalism is to make money. If your main goal is to make money, you'll find ways to make the most whether it's by cutting costs or finding a market to latch onto. This can lead to unethical but totally legal behaviour that could save a lot of money. For example, advertisements are big on using stereotypes especially to undermine someone and make them feel compelled to buy a product to 'fix' themself. A company with such advertisements can also then do a PR campaign that's pro feminism. Consumers rarely seem to connect these things so essentially the company can have their cake and eat it too. This is exactly what you would do if you wanted a lot of money, and it has the appearance of being ethical to consumers that would financially support the stance while still using unethical methods to earn more money. This isn't a hypothetical by the way, if you look up articles about Dove's advertising campaign their parent company are literally doing this.

I don't know much about superhero comics so it was a more broad point, but it's a bad solution to only have the front and centre characters being diversified. You need to have a good distribution at all levels. Genuinely, most media should have a fifty fifty gender split but it's a rare occurence. That said, I had heard about the X-Men one and I do really like that, it actually feels closer to what I'm talking about. Buuut again, it's not much of a solution if the representation of the women is overly narrow like with their physical appearance and sexualisation. I'm not saying that there's no value to making the changes but it's worth thinking about what they're not doing right as well as what they are.
  13. I Had A Random Thought...

It's apparently really hard to manage all that release stuff, so Cartoon Saloon has to figure out all sorts of deals and stuff that I know nothing about. Also all the biggest awards are in mainland Europe and over there so it makes sense to push it out sooner in those areas.

Is MotivationMonday the next Sonic game?
  15. I Had A Random Thought...

Yeah, it's definitely a lot of that. Also it seems like a successful first film essentially guarantees a dependable box office return if you even make a passing effort at your next film so you'll throw some money onto a new one but you wont be as worried about it as a 'new IP'. Plus you end up having a degree of baggage with having to continue what the first film established. Hiccup's girlfriend is essentially irrelevant in the second movie. His friends could have fulfilled the same role as her and their relationship was meaningless. But if they wrote her out in some way, that would require an actual plot motivation and screentime.
  16. Feminism

Surface level good token representation is so irritating, it's essentially just for good PR these days. If you want to be optimistic, it's good that social justice is a viable market, but it's not worthwhile to see a Marvel comic gender swap a single character and make no other changes. Why not gender swap a bunch so that the gender numbers are actually more accurate to real life. Then rewrite some characters and give them interesting arcs that aren't sexist but maybe pertain to not being a dude? Oh right, for all the reasons that that's counterproductive to their entire business as well as the fact that they don't actually care to make a real effort at all.
  17. I Had A Random Thought...

That actually is something I was trying to get at in a roundabout way. When I say a mess I mean there were good pieces that didn't fit. There was worth in the film but it didn't come together to make a solid coherent story underneath it all so I think that overall the film doesn't work, like if you just haphazardly attached four quarters of different famous paintings, the corners might be nice but you probably wont make a good painting.
  18. Pay to find out what Snoggles REALLY thinks of you.
  19. I Had A Random Thought...

I don't know the exact nomination process but archaic sounds like a good term for the impression I've gotten. Also here we go, spoilers for How to Train Your Dragon 2 Its a fine entertaining adventure movie with great artistry in how it's made. But it means nothing. None of it is trying to say anything or hook into an emotional core. That doesn't make it a bad movie (depending on your outlook at least) but it makes it undeserving of Oscars attention when films like the Lego Movie did try to say something with its screen time.
  20. But Nintendo would do it way weirder, like pay 50c to have Tom Nook change his stock instantly! And it would be bizarrely insidious.
  21. I Had A Random Thought...

People were obviously hoping for Song of the Sea, I haven't even been able to see it yet so I really can't say if the film deserves it but I know the Disney ones didn't since Boxtrolls was better, even though there was still plenty of room to improve over that for the other two movies. Just that How to Train Your Dragon was a mess with not knowing what it wanted to say and Big Hero Six is a pretty bog standard movie with nothing to say except "please give me money."
  22. I Had A Random Thought...

The Oscars are a sham! Or, why a select group of old white dudes in Hollywood are limited in what they consider the best work of a medium especially when it's a field they have no interest or expertise in. Basically, Big Hero 6 shouldn't have won best animated film, though I'm not sure which film did deserve it (but definitely not Big Hero 6 or How to Train Your Dragon)

I think in addition to what you would expect, I've had good experiences with sending tweets out to strangers. I mostly try to be funny unless I'm answering a direct/implicit question in their tweet. Of all the tweets I've sent, I've had maybe one negative response due to my tweet being worded poorly. Honestly talking to people I don't know is one of the biggest draws of twitter for me. I get to read the thoughts of all sorts of people and then share my own with them. I have gotten plenty of positive reactions from tweets I send to strangers. But obviously that's not worthwhile if I'm inadvertently sending tweets that are having negative reactions just because I carelessly toss out tweets without considering their potential effect and actual worth.
  24. Feminism

Yeah I got the impression that you should default to not sending an unsolicited tweet, think about whether it's worth sending based on what the article outlines and then decide if you'll actually send it or not.
  25. I think the idea is to approximate a particular viewpoint on games, so that you can respond consistently to each score a game gets from Polygon. If you didn't make these efforts then you'd put out an inconsistent review response and erratic scores. As a way to work with the existence of metacritic I get why it's an effective system but I'd ideally just... not have the metacritic system?
