  1. Didactic Thumbs (Pedantry Corner)

In my defence, these tactics are usually more blunt and noticeable to people when I do them.
  2. Didactic Thumbs (Pedantry Corner)

I edited it about an hour ago, thought it'd be obvious and then when it wasn't I thought a cheeky edited post would make it obvious. But it seems you're very easily confused by my manipulations. Also you entirely choose whether or not to add the edited by line.
  3. Didactic Thumbs (Pedantry Corner)

That's madness Ben, I don't even know how to edit a post! Honest!
  4. The Big VR Thread

It's possible the Vive has just been demonstrated with only games that are well designed to avoid nausea. Though that would still be a worthwhile selling point of Valve continued to filter for games that... Ok wait, it's Valve that's still cause for scepticism.
  5. Didactic Thumbs (Pedantry Corner)

    ? Reread the post Ben.
  6. The Individual and the Organization.

I don't feel like it was an attempt to appeal to them since there are plenty of GG critical parts. I just read it that he genuinely thinks individual representation is an ultimately fruitless endeavour compared to systemic representation.
  7. Cartoons!

  8. The Individual and the Organization.

That's a great point, it also reminds that I meant to say I was not happy with the connection drawn with systems in games as nonfiction. They may not contain explicit narrative but claiming they are closer to nonfiction rings as hollow to me as the idea of games being apolitical.
  9. I Had A Random Thought...

Just found out from Bogost's article that (original I think) Sim City has a max tax rate of 20%. That's mad, I'm paying more than that on my basic entry level salary and if I earned twice as much I'd be paying double.
  10. The Individual and the Organization.

I think he's overly dismissive of the capabilities that a nuanced game can offer to underrepresented peoples. Putting the Walking Dead as the extreme is unfair to me, Gone Home is far more appropriate and it shows why there's real value in the idea of a game that will show you one person in depth. I'm not very familiar with Bogost so forgive me if I'm quick to judge here, but is he normally a strong advocate of social justice? It seems very dismissive to suggest it's better to focus on systems when a big issue with real world systems is how they try to treat everyone as near categories without nuance and recognition of individuality. I agree that there's a lot of interesting things you can do with a system based game but I think he's overselling the idea that it has more to offer.
  11. Didactic Thumbs (Pedantry Corner)

I believe you should reread my post in context, I'm as proud of my minor head cannon as I am of my major chest cannons.
  12. Movie/TV recommendations

I enjoyed the season but it didn't feel cohesive the same way seasons 1 through 3 did. Instead of the series following the whole family, each episode tracked with a particular character. It wasn't strict so it weaved around a lot but there was always a focus on an individual or two. It made the show feel quite odd, and made it more complicated to watch since they had doubled down on the complex narrative that wasn't easy to follow at first. While the original run was always complex but in a way that meant you knew what was going on (or at least thought you did until later you discovered another layer that you'd missed before) I enjoyed the 4th series but it felt like a different show to me.
  13. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Neither of us are basing this on figures (I think that's what makes this an internet argument) but I believe that not that many people are really being harmed from a misguided perception about how much an injury will harm them, however a justification of torture making a more widespread belief in its efficacy makes it acceptable to people. Instead of questioning whether or not it works even, people start from the assumption that it works and as a result might be willing to think it's an acceptable move for people in power to take. Obviously random individuals are not making the decision to torture people, but the way democracy works is by majority opinion, so if the majority is predisposed to conceding torture as acceptable then it's not a point that needs to be argued or defended the way it would if it was widely considered to be ineffective.
  14. Life

You're absolutely right, that was exactly it.
  15. Life

Aw, I've gotta go back through the catalogue now. He wrote great books. I'm not a fan of fantasy at all but he seemed to write stories that just didn't feel like traditional fantasy even though he drew on every trope there was. He just made it feel genuine.
  16. The threat of Big Dog

    With robots/robot arms, duh.
  17. Idle Thumbs 201: Adults Only

In an entirely different direction, I didn't understand the concept of mass production as a child so when the slogan for Jenga was "There is only one Jenga", I took that literally and wondered why it took them so long to sell the copy of their game.
  18. The threat of Big Dog

This is why we need more unarmed black teenagers building robots.
  19. Is Social Media Eroding Our Humanity?

Cheese Castle sounds like the name of a dungeon where you fight a boss in a pro veganism game that I'll probably make now.
  20. I Had A Random Thought...

    I think you mean
  21. Life

"Huh, I didn't think you'd have a tattoo at all, let alone there."
  22. Life

So I found out that my 2 month contract is going to be extended, but it was also implied that might be a conversation or negotation? I really hope I'm not meant to... argue for things. I am not equipped for that.
  23. Idle Thumbs 201: Adults Only

This episode is an audio special with Cara's unusual accent and the full new intro. Also yes it's been two decades but I had been thinking I should play Full Throttle when hearing you all talk about it... I guess instead I should be getting round to Grim Fandango until I forget the stuff said here. (not that you're expected to be careful about the plot at this point, it's just funny I had the exact experience that got me interested in playing the game and then turned me off doing it any time soon)
  24. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

But I'm not talking about certain people seeing TV and taking it as fact, I'm talking about the normalising effect that media subconsciously has upon consumers, including us. Drawing a parallel to sexism again, do you think that Feminist Frequency's videos are unnecessary because they're about games and everyone knows games aren't real? Or do you, like me, think that a recurring trend of these tropes reinforces a harmful view of the real world that is worth highlighting. That's exactly why I feel authors bear the majority of the responsibility. You might feel like the torture situation is different. I certainly feel like it's more specific and less recurring but it's certainly a trope that I believe has a similar effect on how people think.
  25. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I think sexism and pro-torture issues are more prevalent than people thinking they can take a bullet and be fine. As Twig said, the bullet is a fantasy but sexism and pro torture draw parallels to life that people believe.
