Wizard Jam - Idle Thumbs Game Jam Interest Gauge / Chit Chat corner
SuperBiasedMan replied to Dinosaursssssss's topic in Idle Banter
Here's a good introduction to twine for anyone wanting to dip their toes in. It's a 300 word max twine game jam: http://itch.io/jam/twiny The page has examples of other people's work as well if you want an idea of where to start it. -
I see where you're coming from, but I'm hesitant to support the idea of representing asexuals in cartoons by making people genderless. That implicitly highlights a narrative where you can be asexual but it's because you're biologically different by lacking a gender. A big issue with the representation of asexuality is the idea that if you don't want sex in any way at all there must be something wrong, whether it's psychologically, physically or whatever. I'd personally like it much more to see asexuality represented as a complement to other people with differing relationship interests. Show that asexuality is a perfectly normal way to be even if people around you are into all sorts of relationships. Don't make that person asexual because of something inherent to them or something that happened to them. Just make them that way.

Well that's an odd stance to take when the gems are very clearly based on feminine looks. I'd personally view them being called genderless as pretty poor world building at best, or an attempt to minimise controversy at worst (ie. No fundamentalist parents, don't worry. They're all just gender less, no lesbianism here). I also don't think an author can actually have a dictatorship over their work. Interpretation matters a lot, so if the fanbase at large sees it and the representation matches with an under represented LGBT group, why not draw conclusions from that?

The difficulty is when other people need to look back at something and decide what the intention was. And to some people something like a female nipple might be inherently sexual anyway.

I think part of the message is that it shouldn't even be considered pornography when it's just women who want the freedom to be able to not cover their chests. How exactly the legal system would respond is complicated. But my entirely unprofessional understanding was that the point of the laws was to prevent minors being abused by other people creating the images and distributing them?

This just is the dynamic of our family. It's not particular to now or even my dad. My family in general is just pretty amicable but impersonal. I probably coulda said that this wasn't any revelation to me, I think about it occasionally. It just happened to come up again today and made me curious about other people.
-
I'm conducting an informal survey, do you Thumbs feel close to your parents? I was talking to my dad about my job, and it was clear he did not understand what it was at all. And I just thought about how little he does know or understand about me. Being vegan, nerdy or an art hipster are not things he could relate to and I've never made any real effort to try communicate any of this to him. I don't have a desire to, the thought actually makes me vaguely uncomfortable. I just don't feel like there's a personal relationship there. As with all things, I'm curious how other people's experiences compare to mine. Also yeah Fridays are pretty nice.

I moved out for work to another place two months ago, but still keeping my old flat for the moment (because reasons). I just found out that in my absence my roommate racked up a 220 euro electricity bill. By contrast, the previous bill (which was over winter) was only 40 more when me and my girlfriend spent a full two months staying there. My girlfriend was in the flat for a month still, and I went back for a couple weekends but man... I was expecting it to be 100 at most. I literally cannot pay this and will now have to be a butt and tell her that I can pay some but most of it is not my bill. I'd be more willing to help her if not for the fact that I'm still paying my share of rent for a mostly unused room while paying for the room I'm actually living in... and that's a ridiculous bill to have made mostly by herself.

It's real, it's just reserved for official nobles and people with high intake of potentially taboo substances. -
Twin Peaks Rewatch Episode 23: Slaves and Masters

My favourite part was when they had a shot of the grieving widow walking up a stairs with an overlay shot of her own face from earlier in that scene. Powerful stuff. -

Welcome N1njaSquirrel, hope you like it here!

This is a cool idea! I'm nowhere near affording it but I'm curious what'll come of it.

I probably should have included an Internet to English translation

Twin Peaks Rewatch 22: Double Play

We've had enough of Ben/Catherine/Josie facing off, now it's time for round 2: English white dude and English white dude (now with added sunglasses). -
Stuff like this is so weird to me that I always forget it. I've never lived more than 10 minutes walk away from some size of shop. I think it's currently a legal obligation here to include some commercial outlets when planning a housing estate over a certain size. So that you don't end up plonking a bunch of people in an isolated area and nothing near them. Of course that's just inherently not as big an issue for us anyway because of how our towns and cities developed.

Just finished season 3 of House of Cards (also spoilers for the UK one I guess, though the UK one is extremely similar in the basic plot and overall didn't hit the same high as the Netflix one to me) It was good. Watch it if you haven't.

Oh don't get me started on commutes. I had a bus commute once and if was pretty awful, since then I've always walked. Infinitely better when it's possible.
-
Yeah, true. I should have said that I have the privilege of living in Dublin(-ish? I'm kinda not any more), the place all the public transport points to like a bad GG collusion diagram. For the occasional times when I have had to go to the awkward places I just accept a lift or mangle the routes and put up with it. I do think that pure ignorance makes it easier to do driving stuff when younger. That actually seems like a terrible thought to me though, makes me want to start a campaign to dissuade kids from driving.
-
What relationship do you Thumbs have with driving? I have no form of licence whatsoever (I'm 254) and frankly I'd rather not ever have to get one. Public transport can be irritating but it works for me and it's cheaper than car expenses. I have no problem walking a lot too, Also I feel uncomfortable with the idea of controlling a large metal contraption external to my body that's filled with a combustible fuel. I have trouble catching my earphone wires on things, I don't trust my ability to drive properly. This is obviously pretty influenced by being in Ireland where it's less driving focused and... relatively socialist? Or at least relatively unsocialist. But I'm guessing at least one person thinks it's odd that I'm in my mid twenties and have never had a licence, lesson or even attempt at driving.

Idle Thumbs 202: Poopwater, New Mexico

I'm on baby level of grown up stuff. Sure, I can rent an apartment and buy furniture, but I can't drive at all. So I'm in that awkward gap of needing a real adult to give my desk a lift. -

I might not have been that clear before, but I've just never bought a mattress. I always used the ones that came with the places I rented, I actually only bought furniture for the first time last year since we did need a desk and couple shelves on top of what the flat had. It didn't occur to me that a mattress costing half a grand could be normal/reasonable because that's a very significant amount of money to me for something I just thought of as being part of the bed itself. -

I presume so, but hearing it called reasonable was very odd to me. I could probably make a full list of the things I've spent that much money on that wasn't rent. -

A friend of mine loved when she found out about emulators because she was able to up the walking speed on the old Pokémon games and not deal with the arbitrary slowness. It's especially weird in RPGs like that were you can get a bike or running shoes, so they clearly recognise people want to go faster, but they only allow for it if you get the extra other thing (which also has limitations for how you can use it anyway).
