Damn it, but computers have become really complicated
SuperBiasedMan replied to Erkki's topic in Idle Banter
Really? It seemed average enough for the 4GB range, and I do need a decent amount for running graphics programs like Photoshop and such. Is the i3 that much worse? There's a €100 price jump up to the i5 so I thought that might be a bit much extra to pay. Also I know nothing, is seagate bad? I just picked a hard drive that matched the capacity and write speed. -

Ok, sorry to bother you about this again. I liked the look of the Infinity X3 but then realised with shipping and the exchange rate it was running me almost €900, so I looked into alternative sites that I could maybe build a similar computer. I think I've mostly got it, though the website has barely any NVIDIA graphics cards so I'll have to figure out what I'd want to do to replace that. If you don't mind, could you see if this still matches all the important parts of what your build had? http://www.hardwareversand.de/en/pcconfigurator.jsp?pcConfigurator.asid=1296240&pcConfigurator.gpOnly=0 Oh also glowing things aren't a big deal. I feel dumb buying it, but realistically it'd only be a problem on the odd occasion when trying to watch a film with the lights off when there's the red glow in my peripheral vision. -
You people have such nice work spaces. (I only get to use the laptop, not the desktop to the left)

Thanks! The shop stuff was surprisingly un time consuming I looove that picture you linked. Especially when I first saw it on my phone it looked so much more solid as a scaled down image. My bias is a blatant one. Also a bit but actually not as many as you'd think, a lot of the stuff was on relatively few layers because I mostly work on just one for the picture and then a couple more for certain occasional details and shading/highlights. I probably work terribly inefficiently but I enjoy it. EDIT: Just saw this posted too now.

Probably then! Don't think I'll be at state of play but next time I'm going to a Dublin based event (these days I'm in Kilkenny most of the time) I'll have to hit you up and see if you'll be there.

Cheers! I'm gonna look around and look into things today to try figure something out and hopefully settle on a solid computer that wont need to glow. -
Ok, here's the bigger non 4am post where I reference a bunch of my own stuff. (that's more because I know what I was thinking as I made them, not because I think these are great works or anything). First, this animated gif: I did make this first by sketching on paper and then tracing it into a pixel art form. The reason I think it's valuable as pixel art is that it can be so small and still clearly recognisable. The shoulder strap for his bag is rarely more than 10-20 pixels per frame but it still stands out as readable. I think the tiny little gif has real charm from the simple readable nature of it (though obviously that's also to do with the character design and the animation). I much prefer the exacting meticulous nature of tracing this and turning my rough and messy pencil sketches into a clear and direct form. The ledge that the character catches onto is not totally consistent in the pages but in these tracings it's an exact inert surface that makes it felt much more clearly. Then this picture which I spent a serious length of time working on for a commission thing. I really enjoyed that I could go through a long process of building the basic structure and then build on new details to refine and make it look nicer. If i had more time I would've added textures and roughness to the overly clean surfaces (especially on the roof) but with pixel art I can do that very easily and cleanly. Plenty of art can be iterative and build on a base, but with pixel art you can both do it in a 100% clean manner where it's never destructive while also meticulously detailing out exactly what I want point by point. In media like painting I'd need to be skilled about how I hold the brush and how I control it. Also there probably is a better program but I just use GIMP cause I really like it and it works fine even if it's not totally optimised for it.

[Release] Unmasking the Brain Burglar
SuperBiasedMan replied to gerbilsinspace's topic in Wizard Jam 1 Archive
Personally I'd recommend leaving it up and highlighting that it's a buggy release you intend to update at a later date. -
I have much to say about this when it's not 4am, and will likely be an arrogant twat who uses my own work as an example, but it's about abstraction, minimalistic representation and extreme detail. Some stuff I've worked in can take many hours of meticulous pixel placing where I can control every dot of the whole picture. The sheer control while still being able to make a surprisingly organic picture is why I'm drawn to it so much.

Alright! They're finally gonna announce a Half Life 3 hat for TF2!

I'm glad the despair was borne out too. Also cool that you're another irish person! dibs is here and also represents our fair land. Are you from Dublin? If you're from Dublin and have gone to some game making thing there is a good chance we've almost met.

SuperBiasedMan replied to Erkki's topic in Idle Banter
That is probably part of my issue whenever I look for computers, I'm unsure of what to budget around. I think around €400 - €600($450 - $700)? -
I'll straight up admit, I made it hard because the ending was underwhelming joke with bad art I want practice with fleshing stuff out and making it a full game with polish, pause, menu, etc. So I could do an actual level set that way and make it not one hard ramp up where you literally can't reach the first platform without learning how the vomit works. Also I'm so glad that the portrait hints work, cause I only realised I had the directionless problem halfway through and then decided to pile in a bunch of those portraits.

Is it presumptuous of me to ask here for advice on getting a new computer? As my laptop and dekstop inch closer to death and I have an actual job I'm thinking about possibly getting a new, reliable desktop. But I always hate googling this stuff, I feel like I end up wading through a sea of reviews on totally different machines that are hard to compare and focused on massive processor/graphical performance. When all I'm trying to do is find out what I could use reliably for making art and games (with relatively low scope). I barely even play the newest games to be honest, and much prefer lowering settings to get a smooth experience but that's not what the market optimises for. Actually if it's a bad fit to ask for help here just read this as an annoyed rant. -
Me and my girlfriend were long distance for years until we moved in together last year. Then 6 months later I got a job in another town two hours away where she hasn't moved yet because of reasons. It's weird how quickly we adjusted to living together all the time and now we've been mainly seeing each other on weekends for a few months and that's much harder to adjust to.

They sure are. Lidl feels kinda big for here though. Not that most others are smaller but Lidl feels like a big warehouse way more than Dunnes, Tesco or Supervalu.

Twin Peaks Rewatch 28: The Path to the Black Lodge
SuperBiasedMan replied to Chris's topic in Twin Peaks Rewatch Episodes
First time watcher, huh? I do agree with the Bobby sentiment. In my head, his rare moments of being a decent person stem from his father's influence because Briggs very clearly wants to foster emotional growth even if Bobby's Persona rejects that heavily. -
You mean "Kingsfield 2016 (from From)"

I can entirely believe it'd be impossible or very hard to disable until people get pissed enough that Microsoft are forced to change it. Remember Metro? -

Idle Thumbs 208: Buds are Out, Keys are In

Chris you have outdone yourself. -
I'm actually going to a doctor this morning to try and be a real adult and stuff, but I'm sure at some point they'll see through me and insist to talk to my parents.

Idle Thumbs 208: Buds are Out, Keys are In
SuperBiasedMan replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Of all the weird tangents in Idle Thumbs I never thought I'd hear a thorough Doug reference. Now the theme is playing in my head. -
That is a perfectly valid game design, though in that light I wonder if the name is a little poorly chosen.
