  1. Winter Wizard Jolly Jam interest thread

I'm hoping it's surging in option one. 8) then it'd be a birthday jam for me.
  2. Undertale - No need to kill things, even if they try kill you

Have you seen that ending totally? I feel like you might not have. I think it's silly to say that this undermines the idea. Presenting his idea of what happens if you do choose extreme violence supports Toby Fox's exploration of why people act violently and what it means. It lets you try acting violently and tries to respond in turn. This is one of the great strengths in game narrative, they can present you with different views of an idea depending on how you interact with the game. This may be a difference of ideas but I don't think that a creative work needs a message that is trying to teach or say a succinct thing like "Violence is bad because x". To me it's plenty if the game explores the idea of violence/empathy in a way that resonates with me even if there's no key message that it gets to me. I like that it just tries to show different reasons people can be violent and how you can still extend empathy to someone that's acting violently towards you regardless of their reason. Or you can extend violence to them and see the consequences of that. As someone who decided to become vegan on ethical grounds, I can get behind the philosophy of this game.
  3. Undertale - No need to kill things, even if they try kill you

I'm intrigued you said it has nothing to say. I think it could have said it better in parts but to me the game is pretty clearly exploring motivations behind violence and ways to circumvent the desire in yourself and others to use violence. @Gaizo Are you familiar with JRPGs. I wouldn't have considered that necessary, but the conventions of those games have apparently repelled some people.
  4. Undertale - No need to kill things, even if they try kill you

I don't know but I would love it because he has a good mix of chiptune-y and 'real' music. If you listen to the boss tracks in particular you can hear how it begins with simple chiptunes and layers in the more real sounding instruments for depth to the track. It's just one small thing I've noticed so I'm sure there's tons to talk about for anyone who knows about music.
  5. Other podcasts

This might just make it weirder but you can play podcasts at slightly slower speeds with PocketCasts
  6. Let's discuss what a video game is

Actually I would say that Sleep No More fits as a 'game' if you think of it more as a thing you get to 'play' in. Similar to roleplaying in a LARP, you're simulating an experience that is not real within certain boundaries in order to create an enjoyable interactive atmosphere.
  7. Other podcasts

Yes if there is a good SJW cast replacement I would love suggestions. I'm gonna need my podcast actually about current games stuff.
  8. Winter Wizard Jolly Jam interest thread

For the record teams are 100 percent optional. Nobody wants forced teams.
  9. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

We need a game where the explosive barrels are modelled with realistic physics that allows them to be moved around. The bad guys can pick them up and move them, you could even knock them over and make them roll down a hill.
  10. Other podcasts

    Same except with Link's Awakening.
  11. Undertale - No need to kill things, even if they try kill you

That absolutely is the core of what I care about in this game. I think even with some of the spoilered reservations we're having about the ending, it does a great job of this theme through the game.
  12. Undertale - No need to kill things, even if they try kill you

The demo is pretty accurate. It's (as far as I remember) exactly just the first level of the game. There's more actual interacting with others and story, and the fights get more interesting. But if you found it hard it will only get worse (depending on how you play), unfortunately you may want to skip it. As a more general point. it's interesting that a lot of people praise the humour. I definitely found it funny but that's one of the least important aspects of the game. I found the humour better for just the game's general charm and endearing me to the characters.
  13. Let's discuss what a video game is

Yeah Dear Esther was kind of a nice experience but I didn't feel like there was any substance to what they were trying to say so I didn't get much out of it.
  14. Yeah modern low poly styles are actually making good use of minimalist design, texture and lighting in a way that early 3D didn't in games. Look at Tomb Raider Go for a good recent example. I think in part it was because of technological limitations, though also because even now games can be a real hot mess with art direction.
  15. If we're pointing out weird things, my first Mario game was Warioland on the Gameboy, where Mario makes a brief cameo at the end but I couldn't tell who he was (it was partly the low res graphics). I don't think I've actually played any Mario game between Super Mario Brothers and Super Mario 64 (if the DS remake counts).
  16. Idle Thumbs Readers Slack & Discord

The phone app is pretty solid. The only drawback I'd call out is that the button to bring you to the last read message is very finicky. But that might not matter to you if you're not keen so see all the chat, all the time.
  17. Intriguing, I like that it could also be a trailer for an oddly high concept kid's cartoon.
  18. Play discretely, my underserved lord~
  19. Recently completed video games

Yeah I accidentally romanced the fish in ME2. I just wanted to know his backstory and suddenly I was his seesaw.
  20. Jake is entirely right about Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. I actually just set up the Dolphin emulator in part to replay Sunshine. Don't listen to Nick, he plays those nongame mobile things like "World of Warboats".
