  1. Idle Thumbs 244: Heroes vs Villains

When Steve talked about listening to the cast being his way to keep up with the other thumbs, I imagined him recording his responses to the cast to send back to the thumbs. But since they don't leave space for him to talk really it would just be an hour of incidental reactions like "Oh sweet", "Haha" and "Holy shit!". So if this exists please start releasing it as the new podcast Idle Thumb. Also I came looking for the link to that let's play, and since I didn't see it anywhere I found it myself. for the curious but lazy.
  2. Idle Cook Club - Veggie Feeds-me: My Body Is Ready

I made a second lasagne, since I cheated a bit by doing my previous one in advance. Also I wanted another crack at the sauce. I decided to do a lasagne more like the ones I used to eat, with a tomato sauce and mince (veggie mince of course). It uh, was a bit of a hot mess (though a tasty one). I made more béchamel sauce than before and the lasagne was deeper in the dish, so I don't think it cooked quite as well, and came out goopier than last time. Hopefully it'll set better to eat as leftovers tomorrow. I sort of used a recipe but deviated heavily from it so I wont bother linking to it. I basically fried up some garlic, onions and mushrooms. Once they'd been cooked nicely I added the mince as well as a tin of chopped tomatoes and passata to a boil. Then spinach as well as basil and oregano. I cooked that a bit to thicken it and it formed a lot of the lasagne. made the same béchamel sauce, but tried to cook it for a little longer to see if that'd help and it didn't. Layer order, top to bottom: Béchamel Cheese Pasta Some Tomato/mince Pasta Most of the béchamel Pasta Most of the tomato/mince And here's the photos that don't look pretty: I hope it's more solid after a night in the fridge.
  3. Movie/TV recommendations

Doesn't Miyazaki prefer dubs? I thought someone told me once that he'd rather people not have to constantly look down and read subtitles so they can focus on the images and animation.
  4. Movie/TV recommendations

Bah! I had no idea he was in it either, me and a friend were just watching in the cinema and when he started talking we looked at each other confused, still not quite believing it was him. (he was the old german man in the hotel, if I remember the film right. He was just there for a few scenes)
  5. Movie/TV recommendations

Did you see the dub? Werner Herzog is a voice actor on that film and it's very strange. It's also funny hearing Jim from the office do a good job as the main character.
  6. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

NO. Gams cannot be multiple things. Please give the singular objective definition for gam please.
  7. Either I also missed it or there wasn't really anything deeper, except from a vague sense of the shitty overworked conditions of the industry. But it didn't really have anything specific to say there really. I loved Amstell's voice and I think the personality they gave this one was a big part of what made it so different. Instead of someone trying to push you in directions asserting it's for the best experience, you have a nervous and frazzled man pleading for you to follow instructions. He's never pushy, he's just desperate. When you break from something, he goes along with you and just tries to play along and fix it.
  8. Post your face!

Bjorn has surpassed all expectations. (I don't think I saw a picture of you before)
  9. The Idle Thumbs Super Cookbook!

This is a nice companion to the cook club! The cook club is probably gonna end up full of discussion more than just recipes so it'll be easier to find good recipes here. I'll consult my recipe vault and see if I have anything good to contribute here later.
  10. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

I think that other people felt that but usually in a way that put them off the game. Even some people who like the game seem to think the opening was a bit more bare compared to the rest. Which I agree with to an extent? I feel like it had less dialogue and jokes (partially cause of limited characters) plus it could only tease at the story really. Toriel shoulders a lot of set up mechanically and narratively, which is always less of a favourite point in game. I felt like the game opened up after that bit, and really spread its wings. I still liked the opening but I can see how it sells the rest short. Yeah, I mean the point of the game is that you can be a pacifist in spite of that.
  11. Idle Cook Club - Veggie Feeds-me: My Body Is Ready

I think I'm gonna make a second more traditional (tomato-based) lasagne tomorrow since I cheated and pre-empted the club. I shall post here with results. (also it's still weird to hear them called noodles, noodles are just stringy shapes to me. I call em lasagne sheets)
  12. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Just call them "My Right's Activists".
  13. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

Yeah even if it's not a choice part, it's the digital equivalent of turning a page.
  14. I would be very very interested in Neon Genesis Eva Thumbs Watch.
  15. "Cars sucks." - A Pixar Thread

I haven't watched yet but it is undoubtedly technological limitations that make it look much worse than you remember. This was the very first feature length 3D animation, so they had to figure a lot of stuff out. Faces actually require a LOT of detail to look right. I'm not even talking realism, I just mean if you want to animate a mouth it requires a lot of detail in that section of the model that probably just didn't exist. Realistically using textures would have done better but may not have sold the full 3D and toyness of it. I should note that part of the idea of using toys was that it fit with the 3D look, especially making things look like non plastic materials. You'll notice the humans look the worst in this, which is why they're kept to relatively rare occurrences. A lot of this really was a test/proof of what could be done to lay future groundwork. In that way it's actually fun that we're going in order so we can see the evolution.
  16. [Dev Log] Ice Break

This was a fun soothing play! It had a really nice slow sail around feel. My favourite angle was just sitting from inside the little boat looking out at the huge bergs.
  17. 2015's Games of the Year?

I believe it's more about the principle though I'll note that last I checked Steam's offline play isn't entirely smooth. It requires the game to have been launched online at least once before (this doesn't automatically happen when you download it), so if you've downloaded but never run a game you need internet access to launch it.
  18. 2015's Games of the Year?

I don't generally play all that many games but I have a top 5 I guess, just ordered approximately. I will first give a special mention to Splatoon, it was everything people say here but I only played for a few hours on my brother's Wii U so I wont claim it's a 'true' GOTY. Dr. Langeskov and the really long title I just played this recently, but it was a lot of fun and the voice casting was spot on. It was mentioned on the cast, but it was a short free game in the vein of Stanley Parable by one of its creators, who has now started a studio. I suspect it was made to demonstrate that this style of game isn't a one trick pony and there's more fertile ground to explore, and it absolutely succeeded. Nintendo Badge Arcade This game is fantastic. It's a free to play 3DS game where you play claw games to grab badges to decorate your home screen. I don't decorate the screen but I've collected over a hundred badges over the past month. The game restricts your resources heavily if you're not paying. You can get one practice go every day, which will not get you badges, just gives you the chance to win a couple free plays at real badges. Then there's the fact that the actual claw game is physically simulated. Just because you're holding a badge doesn't mean it will stay in the claw. All the badges can slip and slide around. The different levels are designed to exploit this too, like puzzles. I managed to collect 6 badges the other day just by picking up a single well placed badge. It reminds me a little of the breadth of responses I had to Desert Golf despite it being such a simple game, it tunes the interactions right to make it feel like each moment has real weight since you can only play a couple minutes a day. Box Boy I will echo the above sentiment. I grabbed Box Boy for the Christmas break and it's fantastic. Each new world throws a new mechanic at you, until it then pulls back to start combining the mechanics more heavily to make even more creative puzzles. This makes me want to go back to HAL's back catalogue since I also love Kirby so much. Crypt of the Necrodancer This was my go to game for months, it literally contributed to this list being so short. I liked Spelunky a lot, and wanted to play some more rogue-likes afterwards until I found out that often the tile based set up is actually quite unengaging at the lowest level. Spelunky's movement is incredibly satisfying and a large part of why I dove headfirst into the game, but most rogue-likes I tried had very basic, boring movement because they were essentially tile/turn based, and you're meant to go slow and careful due to the limited resources. Necrodancer is the opposite. Every single step is juicy, satisfying and a tiny challenge. If you go out of rhythm, there's consequences, but staying in rhythm creates an amazing feeling chain. The result is that every step matters, you have to keep moving and so it kept me engaged even on my 1000th replay of level 1 as the original character. It also helps that there's a wide array of difficulty, so while I can beat the game pretty easily, I have never gotten passed the first boss with one of the harder characters. Undertale Nothing is perfect, Undertale has flaws and is not for everyone. But my experience with Undertale was perfect. I could slide right through that game, never getting caught on the flaws or niggling details that make other people bounce off. It hit all the right notes for me. It is basically what I want from games, and I hope that people can learn intelligent lessons from how Undertale was written and designed. There's lots of ways the game knows what you're doing or thinking, and anticipates it so well. It's an idea that's not new, but the execution was fantastic and there's clear choices to discard traditional game design where it wasn't necessary (such as what a 'save' even is). Also I love the soundtrack and continue to listen to it months later.
  19. "Cars sucks." - A Pixar Thread

Should we try to organise viewings soon? It seemed like the consensus was that people wanted to start mid January-ish.
  20. General Video Game Deals Thread

Is that not general Telltale fare or is this one especially low on interactivity?
  21. Idle Cook Club - Veggie Feeds-me: My Body Is Ready

I have never heard of this either! So you just cooked all the food separately and then layered it in a pasta sandwich? I've not hand sloppy joes (vegan or not) but this sounds like a fun thing to try.
  22. Idle Cook Club - Veggie Feeds-me: My Body Is Ready

I use it on occasion. Mostly for tacos, shepherd's pies and the occasional bolognaise or chilli. But half the time for the latter two I'll just use kidney beans and leave out the TVP. I've never had a problem with it, it is very tasty when spiced right. I suspect that the main objection to it would come from people who basically try to eat veggie by always replacing meat with TVP or another meat substitute instead of trying all vegetable dishes. Or trying dishes expressly designed to have no meat in the first place. I know some vegetarians get stuck into just buying frozen foods labelled vegetarian but it's quite limiting to your diet.
  23. Idle Cook Club - Veggie Feeds-me: My Body Is Ready

Yes mince = TVP. I was going to say TVP but I'm not sure how familar the term is to others. (TVP = Textured Vegetable Protein for anyone confused) Also I can't help you dibs cause I dunno what calvo nero is.
  24. Idle Cook Club - Veggie Feeds-me: My Body Is Ready

Yeah, we're rolling with concepts like that. I just say "lasagne" and you can make of that what you want. I think it'll be especially fun when people talk about what they'll be doing and that might spark ideas for others. People can share recipes if they want, or people can request recipes (which is why I posted the shepherds pie one above, it was requested) but that's all optional. I'll clarify this and update the original post with the time frame too. (I also opted to assume people posting want to be involved unless they say otherwise)
  25. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

Oh yeah a few. The handheld Zeldas are still 2D even when they use 3D models I think. Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks are both 2D from what I remember, though I only played PH and enjoyed it. Link Between Worlds is 2D, though it's half a remake of Link to the Past if that matters.
