  1. This is a super delayed revive, but no one brought it up. (note I'm halfway through the season/cast so use spoilers if necessary please) On the cast they talked briefly about the exchange Ani had about being suspended, where she says "This wouldn't happen if I were a man." I found that very odd, because surely a sexual harassment case against a man is way more common place? I understand that the dudes male entitlement probably encouraged him to report her, but I would have thought that the actual system would be, if not equal, skewed in her favour for once. Maybe I'm way off? It just felt odd to me, and then with the following line about her being "allowed to say that" (as a woman), it was a bad moment. I'm retaining benefit of the doubt, but taken together I don't like the implied narrative of her using gender as an excuse when it's 'clearly' irrelevant. Hopefully I'm totally wrong though.

I think too often this gets read as the exceptional assholes and makes people feel like they don't have this problem. This issue is getting people to understand they might be "nice, good people", but society has trained them to respond differently to trans patients than other patients. The doctors need to understand that this is not something they can will away, and empathy is not actually easy to do, especially when you're in the midst of a busy stressful job.
  3. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

For reference I just started playing a few days ago and have had no internet troubles. But I haven't specifically signed up, I just know that I got bonus money and the achievement rewards without problems.
  4. Now that you say that I also think that might be part of why the show can feel so chill too. Both get to take their time and just let the other person talk. (I'm also lovin it )
  5. Can Game Mechanics be Ingrained with Culture/Ideology?

Yeah from my limited Sim City play it's all about pushing capitalism first, something like environmental concern is entirely a reaction to a problem that your society has created. There's never been a sense of preserving anything natural in Sim City. The natural part of the landscape is basically either empty space, or empty space with trees etc. in the way of your city.
  6. The Witness by Jonathan Blow

I haven't even watched a trailer for this or read a review besides the above excerpts, but I do think there can be too far in the opposite direction to overrewarding. Given the sheer number of puzzles in the game, it's possible the experience feels like the game actively devalues any solution by immediately saying "Well yeah you got that, have an even harder puzzle than the one that just stumped you so bad.". In a sense it can feel like in poor faith it specifically discounts achievement, rather than just not doling out reward for every puzzle solved. Though to be fair, games can probably feel like that really easily just by being 'neutral' given how common constant reward is in games.
  7. "Cars sucks." - A Pixar Thread

Right through Pixar's films I'm not really expecting any of it to be about Social Justice or progressiveness. I'd be surprised if they made many decisions that weren't about expedience or making a more interesting/emotional story, as much as I like that read on it.
  8. Well I think a slow change is already happening. More and more popular sites are drifting from scores and direct metrics of games. It's not a hard switch but it's certainly a drift from trying to quantify a games 'objective' quality and matching sites against each other.

  11. Life

I've been in my current job for a full year now, and we basically just finished the show I started working on when I arrived. When I went to go meet everyone in the pub I wasn't prepared for my boss to describe my contribution to the show as "incalculable" (in the good way) and talk about how he and my other superior described me as such in meetings. I never feel like my work isn't appreciated here, but it's something else to hear outright that the show wouldn't be the same without you. That even if deadlines could be hit, there wouldn't be time to make the show reach the standard it did if I hadn't been there managing to do everything he asked of me. I was not expecting a night at the pub to be this gratifying.
  12. Idle Cook Club - Veggie Feeds-me: My Body Is Ready

So I made my crepes! A reminder, I used this recipe that dibs linked. First off, those savoury crepes were the best. They really work so well for basically being spiced with just turmeric. The dipping sauce was also great, pretty similar to what we use for stir frys and generic asian-ish food. I think I put too much bean sprouts in the filling. I just didn't think I'd use up beansprouts that were leftover after cooking but they ended up overpowering the mushroom, tofu and onions. All of the filling was good, just a tad sprouty. But when it was all wrapped up in the crepes and dipped it was damn delish. I didn't know to to eat/dip it right because it seemed like everything fell out. I did make the batter of the crepes too thick, which probably made them extra thick in size and density. But to be honest I liked that, though it may have inhibited eating them properly. Well worth a try, I'd be more careful with the filling next time, and maybe spice the tofu a litttle bit more. Definitely going in the recipe book though.
  13. I hope the Thumbs will play my Half Life universe game, where you get to play as the Goooordon Freeman.
  14. "Cars sucks." - A Pixar Thread

I'm not sure of the origins but it's also highly prevalent in love action adult media too, even if it's more blunt force in animated movies targeted at kids. Normal guy has thing happen, alienates people in his life as consequences build until he can redeem himself in a single sweeping gesture. It's a time honoured plot (that I agree needs to be reined in).
  15. Just Cause is a great one cause it fits the big game dichotomy well where it's simultaneously saying it's serious and you're fighting a Just Cause while also admitting that you're really doing it for no real reason aside from fun and Just 'Cause.
  16. Idle Cook Club - Veggie Feeds-me: My Body Is Ready

Ooh that looks like a real good one to cook up and have for multiple lunches. Bookmarkin it. I'm finally doing mine tomorrow evening, hoping it's good/not a disaster! Also reminder folks, you don't need to worry about the suggested dish if you wanna stray into other territory. Pancakes, regular cakes, a stew? Just make something new!
  17. Life

A bit of that. Sometimes I also feel like posting about something here but it involves someone else too personally to be fair to post publicly, so I refrain in that case too.

  19. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

I have played the opening to else Heart.Break() in Swedish, having spent some time learning basic Swedish. I was pretty pleased with how I picked up on most of it and it was fun that way. But I think when I go back to play more I'll have to take notes for the words or sentences I can't translate, rather than just having to skim over the occasional message and guess what it means.
