  1. Pen and Paper and Roll20.net Games

I wonder why that's not a setting used more. Is it because the individual party approach is such a chaotic way to operate in a structured society? Me and my brother tried out Dungeon World last night, just the two of us. It was fun, and went smoother than I expected even though he got through stuff pretty quick. There was good shit like him calling a flock of ducks to fly him and a friend to a stop a giant arm creature, promising to pay them in 2 bread. I think I fumbled a bit with rules though, I didn't always know what 'move' his actions should be, or if I should be sticking to them always being moves. A few times I felt like something should be a roll, I'd glance over the moves list and then just ask him to roll a stat either ignoring moves or suggesting a move that seemed a bit off. Likewise I didn't pay enough attention to my DM move list, so I want to be more attentive to that for next time, because I did have to pause and think about consequences a few times and it broke up flow a bit. For next time I have to build up and populate a zombie town. I might ask if he wants to play the Quiet Year for that, cause I'm pretty bad at maps!
  2. I flank all the time and make liberal use of her rewind. I don't rush in to attack unless I have a rewind ready, and as soon as I lose at least 50 health I use it, and try to escape with the blinks I have saved too. Even if the enemy is alive I've already damaged and likely distracted them enough to disrupt what they'd otherwise be doing. All the better if I get multiple chasing me just to deal with one tracer.
  3. Yeah, I don't play him very much at all, so more than a few times I'll be dead and realise I didn't use them.

Essentially you want film trailers to learn from the Stanley Parable demo.

That's a good suggestion, as is your one about rules strictness, I added both. Though a reminder, you don't have to fill out everything. I meant to put real name as optional but woops. Just fill out what you want and what you think matters. It's just to give people ideas for if they want to ask about organising anything.
  6. I mean, I still keep forgetting that Soldier 76 has an alt fire.
  7. Organising Yourself

I get the sense that most people here, like me, are largely working by themselves or with a small amount of assistance on their games. I'm currently thinking through how to expand out a tiny prototype to flesh it out more. One thing I know I need to sort out is how I'm going to organise the list of what to do, what order of importance it should have and how to keep track of progress along with them. Do any of you guys have systems and ideas that you're already working with? A magic bullet piece of software that solves everything is a nice pipe dream, but realistically I'm just wondering what approach you all take to come at this problem, even if it's just a notebook you scribble in or something.
  8. Idle Thumbs 277: Coming Attractions

I think spoilers in trailers are particularly bad because it's the equivalent of having a conversation where someone is just trying to tell you all the best bits from the film, rather than having an interesting conversation that also involves details of the movie.

This is an interesting thought, my gut reaction was that those aren't apocalypses but of course they are.
  10. Pen and Paper and Roll20.net Games

I think they said at one point that they kept forgetting to say when they took contempt tokens. Which was a bummer, cause that's a great mechanic. And I do agree about the factions not really jostling each other much, it would've been fun to see more of that.

Oh, now I realise a thing I should add. Interested formats, like play by post, instant messenger, voice chat, video.

Was there meant to be conflict? I had thought the game was meant to be isolating in a sense, and that people just built upon what had come before.

Like yeah I'm probably ok with generics. I just don't have particular touchstones. As I said, it probably doesn't matter as much as I think. Also cool, thanks Korax! I'll probably just use the idea I had then about a post zombie infestation town. I think at this point we could have enough people for 2 games in theory. Which means in reality there's probably one game people could commit to. I made up making a google sheet, partly cause I was bored at work, for people to add info to. This is probably the easiest way to just look over who's interested, especially for lurkers and people who might have specific requirements. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1aV2-k1dcpwmZmS0HOJ9-33GNyXSQ3SQ1hYfOCWLHyTY/edit?usp=sharing If you think I left out some column that should be there, just add away.

I uh, don't know what any of that is either! I'm not well versed in cyberpunk.

I know what you call a "game" is wrapped up in all sorts of baggage, but for this thread's purpose at least, it seems like it's most useful to just think about whether you had fun with something. Was it enjoyable to 'play' at characters with friends and a loose system of rules. Speaking of loose system. One thing I meant to ask for anyone who's played Dungeon World. For a DW game are you meant to come up with a backstory about the world being post apocalyptic? I didn't see anything about that in the book, and maybe I just made false connections when listening to Friends at the Table. But I thought part of the whole Apocalypse World idea was that there was some calamity and the world has been rebuilding since then. And that as a group it's a good idea to flesh out broadly speaking what happened to the world. Is that a thing or did I misunderstand? I'll probably do it either way, but if I missed out on a part of the book that goes through this broad worldbuilding I'd want to go back over that.

I am more aware of this, having now read the Dungeon World book ahead of trying out a campaign with my brother. I still like how it opens up other options but I do entirely see what you mean about it still being adventure-y. It's probably better for him in this case, since he's a new player. That said, he's made some amazing character choices. He's playing a halfling Druid named Damask Rose. She has squirrels deliver food to her regularly, and she also has a staff that can turn into a huge sword made of roses woven together. The staff/sword is also possessed by her predecessor Moss Rose, the druid that used to protect the forest and is now her weary companion that tries to tell her how to protect the forest. We're gonna make the best magical girl game. I'm also interested in the Sprawl in practically the same capacity as thefncrow, though I have played a full DnD campaign. My concern with the Sprawl was mostly that I don't think I've read/watched etc. a lot of the anime and sci fi stuff it draws on. But that probably matters less than I think.

Are you surprised? It's always the controversial topics that blow up.
  18. Pen and Paper and Roll20.net Games

Ah, the only threads I knew of from multiplayer were (I thought) just trying to form up a group to play. Apologies if there were chat ones I missed. Also having listened to Friends at the Table, I'm very curious about Dungeon world. I'd love to see what else could be done with that system, rather than the DnD I've played where it was inevitably combat focused.
  19. I enjoy playing Mercy a lot. She's my favourite support. I think you need to focus on people being alive to feel good about what you're doing. That and watch the enemy team fall away. But also crucially, if people aren't grouping up right for a support then just switch. No point being support for an unsupportive team.
  20. Not relatedly (at least not intentionally) I did just make a post about Roleplay games (the paper kind). People could talk about running games over there.
  21. Hyper Light Drifter

There is a language, and also scanning those obelisks unlocks some costume. But I never really understood what the fill story was.
  22. Life

This is a weird week for me. Part of a production wrapped up, so a bunch of us had a goodbye dinner. Everyone's going at different days, but of this group I'm one of the two staying. And the other guy doesn't even know if he's staying for very long. People have come and gone before, but this was much more of a friend group breaking up, so it's real sad. Animation is a small enough industry that we'll hopefully see each other again, even if not here. But part of the weirdness is that I'm one of the few people in this industry who gets to be long term anywhere. I'm just integrated directly into the studio and not expected to go anywhere any time soon. Relevantly, today I got called in for an incredibly brief meeting. Basically, to say they're very happy with me and I'm getting a raise immediately. My supervisor had already hinted at both, but it's also nice to be flat out told "you're great, please don't leave". I'm already missing the people who are leaving/haven't left quite yet, but I still have other friends here and hopefully I can make new friend groups when another production rolls in soon. But right now, ambivalence is weird ass thing.
  23. I would also be super keen if we could figure out how to schedule it.
  24. I am currently trying out a bunch new Roleplaying podcasts and I concur.
