My main issue with these kinds of choices is that they're rarely made with an intention to explore a complex relationship of cops against criminals, they instead just take it as a given that this is one version of X vs Y that can be used for a game. These choices seem as though they don't question their assumptions about the idea that the police and criminals are antagonistic to one another. Or that if people do question the relationship, any of their attempts to get the design to reflect this are ignored or shot down because it's 'just a game'. Whether people feel that way about games in general or the non-indie non-'art' games, it's a common reason people believe that they don't need to think about what their game actually means at its core because they're not trying to say something. But the reality is that every game says something whether the makers wanted it to or not. So any responsible creator would spend a lot of time wondering about what the ramifications of their choices are, but too many people in the industry just seem to think that if they're not trying to say anything, then surely nothing is being said. Side note: It'd be nice if you edited the volume levels of the videos a little, to avoid the peaks in gameplay volume making it harder to hear what you're saying.

The Last Metroid is NOT in Captivity; The Galaxy is NOT at Peace
SuperBiasedMan replied to tegan's topic in Video Gaming
I'm excited by this news. Then I realise I've only played 2 of the Metroid games so technically I have a lot of 'new' games I can play already. But still, -
I'm awaiting a statement saying that they can't put the generic female on sale because it's more expensive to produce.

The chorus of "I'm Nick Brekon"s at the start reminded me of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=lIpev8JXJHQ#t=86

A decent collection.
-
Oh! I missed the edit to the post. The link does work, cheers.
-
Nada, :/ thanks though. I wonder if my laptop/browser just has an aversion to Ethnic Breckons.
-
Is that link working for other people? For me it just points to https://www.idlethumbs.net/forums/topic/9436-the-f-nick-breckoncast/undefined/ which I thought was some sort of upload error.

This exact feeling was part of why I found LoL tremendously boring (the other reason was that I was terrible at it). My vague reasoning was that I probably wanted the tactile sensation of direct control, and the idea of just clicking for a destination was horribly disconnected when it is entirely possible for me to control that one character with actual buttons.

I'm kind of talking in super broad vague terms that are supposed to poke doubt at the paradox. I'm not that well read on this stuff so I was just dropping in thoughts. That said, isn't it feasible that the usage period for light technology could be relatively brief? I mean, we've moved through different communications mediums quite fast. They've been mostly electromagnetic for a while now, but cosmically that's a blip. What if we find a new system that works outright better. We've proven in the past that we don't cling to technology except for slight posterity, so couldn't the systems basically fade after a time and require that periods of technological development line up with our own?

I genuinely don't even see what the problem is for the guy here, it reads like a parody complaint.
-
Their culture/philosophy could be so different that communicating with other life would not enter their minds. Alternatively their technology is entirely incompatible with ours so the kind of signals being sent are undetectable.
-
Oof, yeah I've heard they're pretty tight on those. In good news, the guy organising the whole project told me that in previous years people were on Jobseekers during it, so I'm all good.
-
Also worth noting is that XCOM has issues with giving clear player feedback about the implications of your moves. More than a few times I got caught out because I thought I moved into a spot where I could attack an alien but it turned out I was entirely wrong and then it just moved into position to flank me instead. It's not that I needed it to tell me outright and inform me on all things, but the rules of what counted as a shootable alien seemed too arbitrary and fluctuating to accurately predict.

They've said they plan to allow 2 pads later, but at the moment neither games nor firmware support it so they haven't been selling them.

Idle Thumbs 162: Cavorting Amongst the Corpses
SuperBiasedMan replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I have to assume it's just that they're clinging to the way things used to be, when porting across multiple platforms wasn't always easy and a lot of games just had to be exclusive and it was a question of where they chose to go, which influenced the console's actual library. These days the lines are so blurred that it barely matters at all. ...except for Wii U I guess. Cause Nintendo games. -
It can't count as a jobbridge thing, it's a bunch of interns gathered together to work on projects so we're not strictly employed in a company, but it'll still be CV experience and all that. Though I don't think they care about the order you do it in as long as they can claim another person doing jobbridge, in a meeting with my case worker she handed me leaflets and said to give those to employers and maybe suggest they set up on jobbridge if they were thinking of taking me as an unpaid intern. Everything I've read says I should be still entitled to the payment cause it's a thing that will 'further my jobseeking ability' and since it's indirectly government funded I doubt they'll suspect it's a fake or anything. I'd just rather check now than later.

It is true that there's a lot of work involved in creating them, but relative to time spent creating males there isn't a real difference unless your artist have some deficiencies. I feel like they could respond a lot better if they did a similar thing to Nintendo with Tomodachi Life, basically say "Ok, sorry. We did mess up, unfortunately it would take to much time to change it at this point but we can try sort it out early in projects next time." Instead, saying "it takes too long" sounds like an excuse to fend people off and doesn't mean anything in their attitude to design will change.

I've been offered a place on a sort-of-like-an-unpaid-internship-program* where we're gonna make some short films, woop! Now I just need to check if I can still get welfare to live on while at this thing... I wish I'd known how much better not being an adult was before I became one (allegedly). * I wont bore with the details, but this is the good kind that teaches valuable knowledge. Not the cheap slavery kind.

Well the thing is, this is constantly an issue and continuing to highlight it is a way to try and counteract it. I think the only way you could say it's not an issue is if you were to take a look a wide view of various conferences and show that the average was pretty good. But if you were to do that I doubt it would be a promising result. The point isn't really that E3 is bad or that the comparison to severed heads particularly matters, it's just part of the ongoing insistence that the games industry (like many industries really) has more work to do on being truly equal. Also just cause I'm a bit pedantic and it might illustrate the point further, more severed heads than severed feet just outright makes sense because it's more of a symbolic statement and also no one is concerned with the representation of body parts in media. Feet aren't underemployed and undervalued because they are less valued than the head.

I'm pretty sure it was the older one, I forgot to say that in the last post. I could definitely see it being a cheaper replacement for giant monitors if I bought them (at the moment my monitor isn't even HD sized), but even if I did have a big monitor I think the closed off nature of it not letting me share what I'm looking with someone else would be a bit of an issue, even if it was a non gaming thing like wanting to watch a film. So I'd probably need a monitor as well as a headset.

PR responds by saying "But hey, at least some of the severed heads were women."

Grim Fandango being remastered for PS4 and Vita
SuperBiasedMan replied to Thrik's topic in Video Gaming
I have just noticed that two people on here have Christmas themed Grim Fandango avatars. I think before I just merged you into one person before. -
The actual violence wouldn't bother me per se, but if it's true that there's more of it than last year it's not a trend I'd be happy for them to continue.

Unfortunately this evil tentacle guy stole my time machine, so I'll have to settle with trying to minimise my preconceptions.
