No one else is ready for today's work deadline except me. Even though I had to take time off on 3 separate days this week and didn't stay late when everyone else did a 12 hour day. I guess I'm that Work Asshole?

David Lynch's Josh Brolin's Campo Santo's Fire Watch With Me: A Motion Picture Event
SuperBiasedMan replied to TychoCelchuuu's topic in Video Gaming
Knowing the Thumbs, I suspect that Henry is intentionally invoking a male characterisation and it may be part of his character development he is confronted with later down the line. I inferred that the trailer was meant to show Henry as being quite brash and forceful when he ignores the advice of the woman on the walkie talkie and trying to push a topic of conversation he wanted but she didn't. I would really be surprised if Campo Santo weren't consciously considering this. -
Half Minute Hero is more of a puzzle game really, it just uses a JRPG skin/theme.

And 51% female. -
If we make a thread for it anyway, maybe those who don't want to use Google could post replies to the thread about events and have someone with a Google account add the event itself? A not great solution but it means a Google account isn't 100% necessary.

Today is Labor Daybor! (The Labor Movement and Video Games)
SuperBiasedMan replied to MadJackalope's topic in Video Gaming
I think this is also filled out in the actual play too though, players expect to be rewarded for their work and mastery. If that's not what happens then the game is frustrating or poorly designed to them. The whole concept of gamification is based on a capitalist sense of proportional reward. -
Does that mean you also never heard the Wizard episode? (I'm not sure I can say any more without spoiling it)

Made a little weirder by the fact that a lot of cutscenes are actually in game footage being rendered, so you still see people in the clothing you put them in. I had one guy with giant shoulder things that kept blocking out other people's faces during them.

Today is a momentus day. I have heard the birth of the phrase 'Congrats Nick'.

I am absolutely up for this, especially since an attempt to play Tf2 with people fell unfortunately to the wayside with life and organisation.

This is exactly where my thinking leads me, if I'm working on my own stuff then if nothing else I am in control of it far more and I'm a lot more invested and engaged. I doubt there will be any specific thing that comes of this internship when it ends, there are 10 of us on as interns (it's an organised program thing, the studio didn't just decide they'd like to amass interns) and I'd be surprised if they take one of us on straight after but even if they do I know who it'll be. I think it's more likely this gets added to the experience section of the CV, and I might be on a shortlist of people to contact if they need work later. Thanks for the perspectives and responses everyone. I'm not usually the kind of person who shares stuff like this publicly, but it helped a lot.

I've decided to return to twitter, after sort of falling off the internet for a while, on there I am also SuperBiasedMan. I mostly like tweeting dumb jokes, retweeting cool game/animation things and talking to people. I think my very first tweet does an adequate job of demonstrating this: "Since I decided to try out twitter properly, I should come up with a good first tweet. No idea what to put though and I dont wanna mess it u" -SuperBiasedMan - 11 Nov 2011 I've followed a bunch of people here but no doubt missed some people, so sorry if you were accidentally shunned!

Blast! I'm a game behind now. My responses are pending, I'm currently barely on a laptop because of living situation but I'm not out of the club, just incapacitated briefly.

Grim Fandango being remastered for PS4 and Vita
SuperBiasedMan replied to Thrik's topic in Video Gaming
That's what original Monkey Island looked like? (I've only looked at the Thumbnail) I've never played any of the classic adventure games apart from Broken Sword and the first two Discworld ones. I feel like I ought to go on a spree of playing them in the lead up to Grim Fandango (which I've also not played). -
Is it called '4lone in the Dark'?

@tegan And yeah, the disappointing thing about this is its not even a series for commission or anything, it's just a short this studio wanted to make, they're not answering to people and it has such a small committee kind of overhead on it, and still the cracks are showing. Probably due in large part to the fact that it's totally intern made. It is a shame though when contrasted with the hope I had for something more authorial clarity.

The taking less pay part was about being in the animation industry, where hours are longer and pay is lower. I'm on a phone so I can't be totally clear, sorry but basically wondering if it's worth taking the starving artist path to work on projects I'm not wowed by. För the record I'm not entirely sure how good or bad others would view the short but I know I'm not big on it. I'm generally a more critical person than others, I'm quick to dislike things so it's not like it's terrible but it doesn't inspire me too much,. Though there are definite ways I see corners being cut or jobs being poorly done more often than I'd like. I don't know if any decision will come of this but it's certainly been weighing on me more lately when approaching a tight deadline for something I had doubts about even if we had plenty of time.

I have another month or so at this internship I'm in, where I get below minimum wage to work on an animated short that I think is overall quite lacking. I'm a quite critical person, so now I'm wondering if this will be a recurring feeling where I often think the shows and shorts I'm working on are just subpar, and if that really is the case is it worth working in an undervalued industry where they're asking for unpaid overtime (with free pizza!) or should I try do some other work where jobs are still scarce, but less so, and the pay isn't nearly as low grade. Either way I'll want to make stuff in my off time, but maybe spending my days creating stuff that I'm less interested in is just draining more energy for less of a payout?

The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS
SuperBiasedMan replied to Henroid's topic in Video Gaming
My issue with contests like that is that you are getting Kickstarter money to make your game, budget for some damn music. A podcast is rarely run as a for profit system, and is just meant to be a community event which generally makes community participation not an issue. You have a kickstarter where you have raised money for it, and if your budget doesn't include money for all the music because it's all being spent on other stuff then you are outright making the statement that the music doesn't hold the same value. The fact that it's a competition is the worse part really, because that means only the winner gets anything at all for the work they put in. -
When you say cookie clicker isn't a game, what you really mean is it's not dressed up in a set of narratives, visuals and mechanics that are common in games and make it feel familiar to you. The literal mechanics of what you do in Cookie Clicker and WoW are extremely similar. (strategic planning of limited resources to maximise your effectiveness at a goal, whether it's cookie production or dps)

Idle Thumbs 173: Ridonkulous Rift

Yes, but people have already played through the games to get that context. Anita is bringing new context that's relevant to her points. -

I do also constantly conflate the Oculus Rift DK/DK2 with Donkey Kong and I eagerly await the OR ad that features their version of the DK rap -
"Hey, do you want to continue working here for €15 a day?" This shouldn't be a difficult question, but it is. Hooray for capitalism.

So Much Ireland (Help me plan my trip!)
SuperBiasedMan replied to syntheticgerbil's topic in Idle Banter
Awesome! Glad you enjoyed the stay, it definitely sounds like you got a wide range of the Irish experience. Also don't worry about the Irish thing, most of us don't really know how to speak it, and the pronunciations are all over the place anyway.
