  1. I can now confirm I can't make Monday, not going to have proper internet until Tuesday, but I'll be up for it next time.

As a resident from another country that left, good luck! Whether or not it went well for Ireland is certainly... debatable. We've had economic success and significant decline, but if I was made to simplify it and just declare what I thought, I'd say it's better to have your culture be represented in government and also be able to accept that when things go to shit it was closer to being your fault rather than a decision you only had a partial say in. Yes, this is a very vague sentiment since technically you could draw the line of 'your culture' anywhere, and the difference between a politician in London and one in Dublin making the decision is hard to gauge. But Yasawas did specifically note how the party they barely vote for is frequently in power. Also in Ireland we certainly had a history of being marginalised, though I don't know much about if Scotland has had similar treatment.
  3. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

Would you say that it's a game that's good for practicing programming or is it just supposed to be fun and accessible if you're already familiar with programming?
  4. Feminism

The worst part of this for me is that he's entrenched a nerd culture of victimisation in himself where the GGers feel like an underdog that's finally managed to strike a blow back against the massive power structure that's keeping them down... when that's literally the exact opposite of what is happening. He is a part of the power structure that keeps the others down repeatedly, and I think part of why he sees it the other way is because he has a need to identify as a victim to retain his nerd culture status.
  5. Idle Thumbs Steam group and ID exchange

I'm also SuperBiasedMan on Steam, because I have unified branding. http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198012033930/
  6. The Idle Thumbs Store

But I believe it's also a reference to Edelweiss. Roughly pronounced ay-del vice, ie. Idle Vice
  7. Other podcasts

If you don't already, try listening to How Did This Get Made. It's a bad movie podcast and they have a pretty fun chemistry between them and they also don't feel the need to also talk about every movie as a pile of crap, they sometimes just enjoy them as dumb fun. That's all I've got for comedy but I just wanna reiterate a recommendation from earlier. Dan Carlin's Hardcore History is so so good. It's basically like a series of mini history books about various topics where he takes you through the context and series of events for a given topic. It's really well written and clear as it takes you through the points. Episodes before 40 cost $2/3 each but it's free from after that up to the latest episodes, which include a 4 part dissection of World War 1.
  8. Adulthood, Age, and Modernity

I feel so aged just by the past year really, compared to how I felt in college. I've spent the past year mostly unemployed, trying to do freelance work and sort out a way to live with my girlfriend so we don't have to be long distance any more. Towards the end I was also working an internship so it was tough juggling work and moving like so many juggling balls... Two I suppose. The point is, I think life situation is the defining feature of how mature or adult you are, because you can either match up to the demands that life is throwing at you or flub things and make a mess. I've done both this past year, and it definitely feels shitty to flail instead of managing it all. I also think that liking dumb things is a totally separate issue, because the Thumbs make dumb jokes all the time, but that doesn't mean they can devote a large segment of an episode to a frank discussion of serious issues in the industry. Being silly and acting immature isn't what makes someone irresponsibly immature, it's the lack of mature response to your responsibilities that does.
  9. Getting a rev share or unpaid internship Van be fair as long you feel that you are getting significant value in return. The value could be experience, future profits, ownership of the product or company. As long as it's not stacked against the employee then it's worthwhile. Also America really needs more socialism. I was able to get unemployment benefit while in an internship that paid very poorly, if I wasn't offered that money I couldn't have taken that opportunity at all.
  10. I Had A Random Thought...

Just distort the face another way and claim it's someone else!
  11. Life

Thus may be a point against or in favor, but DuoLingo is a gamified system. So that might help your motivation? I know I have trouble retaining the learning as a continuous habit but gamified stuff helps me.
  12. I Had A Random Thought...

Maybe if you tattoo it on a stomach you could rearrange the tattoo so it looks right.
  13. Other podcasts

Those were not the parts of Mr. KP I had hoped for. Boo-urns.
  14. I don't know if they would invoke Paul McCartney as an example, but it does absolutely reinforce a strong precedent of the artistic work not having value, and the people who make budgets and hire people will remember this whether they realise it or not.
  15. Other podcasts

That almost makes me want to listen to the bombcast, but I'm being too hopeful. He can't possibly be full Pilkington, can he?
  16. This sounds sweet! I don't know if I'll have Internet for this one but if I do I'm all over it, and I'll definitely have a real connection sorted by the next time.
  17. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

After posting that I realised I'm a butt because I'm now 90% sure I asked that question months ago on these forums. This time I'm putting it on my wishlist because I clearly established that's the only way I remember any game I'm interested in.

Surely though to get any kind of loan of that size you'll need either collateral or a secure job that the bank is guaranteed to last at least a year or so? Maybe I'm too deep in the starving artist lifestyle but I thought secure jobs were rare at this age.
  19. Idle Thumbs 175: It's an Itchio

I'm already 20 holes into Desert Golf, and a weird thought I had while playing is that it reminds me just how disruptive loading times are in a game in contrast to this, where I get the next hole and it just pass across to say "Well alright, try this one out then.". Though I guess the game still has loading, it just hides it in the brief pause between levels so I forget it exists.
  20. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I think that's an optimistic view, I think it's more likely that people want the easiest possible way to discredit an argument they disagree with. A list of fallacies is a handy way to skim through, find something that matches and slap it on. Fallacies are so broad and numerous that it's hard to not touch or appear to touch any of them.

How special is Minerva's Den actually? It's obviously a classic that people have recommended time and time again, but usually without that much explanation or detail in their recommendation. Is it as expected an expansion on the existing Bioshock 1/2 story or is it more of a discrete separate thing, like Burial at Sea is to Infinite? I ask mostly cause I dropped out of Bioshock after a couple hours because I liked the world but had no interest in the plot, characters or gameplay and I'd seen enough of the world after just a little while. I've never played 2, though I do know the rough synopsis of both games, so if Minerva was related but a significant shift in tone or storytelling I could possibly still get on board.
  22. Idlethumbs changed my life forever

This seems like a good opportunity to ask if anyone else thought of Nick as the jock of the podcast? Though I might have just thought that because when I started listening he happened to talk a lot about sportsy games and his voice seemed to belong to some muscley dude.
  23. Ello.co

Tegan, you could have an account to just tweet- I mean... Ello out those messages. They may need a better word to describe elloing.
  24. The threat of Watch Dogs

I now have an amazing game in my head where you adopt adorable little gruff hackers with a dark past so you can take care of them, play with them and then start to enter them in having competitions for prizes like iconic caps.
  25. Who here likes video games?

Even consoles played computer games for me. I'd play computer games on my SNES, Playstation, Gamecube. Video games was only heard of on TV land, with other words like 'federal' and 'color'.
