This mentality always irritates me, me and most of my friends are art graduates with varying degrees of job success and economic standing but it's still seen as odd if you're at the pub and you aren't buying an expensive pint or two. Or if you don't want to eat out when everyone else is. I get that people just want these things to be social experiences but I've found that people take the excuse that you're just not drinking tonight better than the idea that you'd rather not spend the money or outright don't have much money. Though I'm guilty of the exact opposite, kinda judging friends who say they're completely broke and can't afford food but then decide to buy a pint when we're at the pub.

The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS
SuperBiasedMan replied to Henroid's topic in Video Gaming
Essentially the Penny Arcade kickstarter seemed like a parody kickstarter, except they actually took a ton of money and at no point offered more than their parody reward tiers described. -
That's what I'm saying, fun should be in it early, not something to expect when it has a full release.

I haven't played any of Spacebase myself, I came in here just because I had heard there was some story about it. In reading your answers I feel compelled to point out that a common truism of game design is that the game should start off being fun. If you're starting from an unfun point and trying to find the fun, then scrap it and start over because it's much easier to retry from the start and avoid the issues with what you had. It occurs to me now that Early Access (and the response of the audience) makes that approach pretty impossible, which is a shame.

Yeah, I would also say such women don't actually exist. Everyone's sexist, you combat it by becoming aware and trying not to let it influence you too much. -
The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS

I think encouraging them as guidelines would be great, but my issue is it seems to obligate the creators. Instead of it being encouraging to the creators it feels like it's a way to direct the ire of the backers from Kickstarter themselves to the creator, who then needs to prove their innocence. Obviously that's very much an impression thing and whether it actually goes that way remains to be seen but I'm sceptical that this is the best way to improve the situation. -

So Kickstarter have changed their terms now to obligate creators to finish their work. The specific rules are more nuanced than just "finish it", but here's an article on gamasutra about it. And here's the change This isn't as bad as it could have been, since it's trying to offer ways by which the creators can placate their backers without having to scramble together some release, but I'm still not happy about it. People are supposed to use kickstarter for the freedom of funding passion projects without big burdens of fitting certain criteria. The freedom of the platform is the huge attraction and this move is mostly because people are worried about the freedom and lack of accountability. And I suspect there's a disproportionate concern that the site is being outright abused to just garner bags of cash and run. It also plays into the sense of entitlement that backers have, treating KS like a preorder system for games that don't even have playable demos. The original foundation and intent of the site was "let's donate money to a creator/s who has/have a cool idea so they can try it." You'll also notice that the money raised is referred to as a pledge. Pledges are not investments, but the way the system has skewed they're treated as such and expected to be returned on. But mostly, this is just disappointing because it means KS has sided more with consumers and their demands than it has with the creators it could be fostering and helping. Couldn't they have offered a system of helping with budgets, gathering information from previous campaigns to help new ones? Things that are positive and could grow the site rather than trying to police people. After all, the creators have to put so much more of themselves into any project, even a failed one, than the backers do. It seems unfair to stack the system against them. -
Idle Thumbs 176: The Classic Alien Form

It's definitely a double whammy of dumb, both because the movie is being dumb and then also my thought process goes "They're going to Dublin! That's cool. Oh yeah, I recognise that place! Wait... why do I care if the Muppets have a scene that takes place in areas I vaguely recognise? I'm being dumb." -

As someone from a country that is only occasionally represented in mainstream media, I can say that for us there is a dumb bit of "Oh hey, sweet!" when you see your local area has been included even if it's dumb. And after all... you go into Transformers movies expecting dumb by now. -

I have internet so I'm in for the next one! Who else doesn't own this game? Maybe we could get a 4 pack to share out between us. -
And now my internet is here. I guess that shows how you should bitch about things so the world can fix them and make you look stupid.
-
I've been waiting 3 and a half weeks for internet. Yesterday I called them up again to ask why it's not working and after checking through things with the IT guy he discovered that the technician who installed my line plugged my line into the wrong place. He has no clue where I'm plugged in. It'll take up to five working days to fix this, so I'm going to hit the full month of waiting mark! God I hate the term 'working days'.
-
God I wanna try this again but it has the WORST port. It's really really buggy and stopped a save of mine from working. It's still good to try at $6 but be aware it might give you trouble.

Idle Thumbs 176: The Classic Alien Form
SuperBiasedMan replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
That would've been too obvious, instead he decided to hack a forum and twitter account... That is ridiculous but that's not what people are worried about happening. When you make a work, you're presenting a certain worldview to the audience, your take on how the world is and how the world works. People soak up this information if they're not conscious of it. And then it's in their head, either creating or reinforcing the various different biases and prejudices their brain contains. Biases and prejudices are inescapable, it's just how our brain operates to make it easier to figure out stuff, it's much harder to go through life if you view every person you ever meet as a blank slate and very slowly building an impression of them from their actions. And frankly you don't have the chance to opt out like that, our brains have evolved to work this way. So the real issue is that if you present the racist material as is, there will be people who just accept it to their subconscious. While it will diminish this if you trigger its existence with a preamble about how this racist material is wrong and harmful. Though how much it helps is debatable. -

People use the term pretty loosely, some people use vegetarian to basically mean vegan and others will use it to describe not eating certain meats. Pescetarian would be technically more correct here, but broadly speaking vegetarian usually indicates an intention to avoid consuming animals and at a guess I would say that the game might not readily support 'full' vegetarianism. -
I think that must be from DLC or not a definite occurence or something because I never got that when I played through.

To answer both Mington and tegan I suggest Cabin in the Woods, not sure whether that works well for tegan's purposes but it'd be a fine costume.

I reached hole 1001 of Desert Golfing, so I guess I 'completed' it. I didn't actually get a scoreboard, so either that was changed or I misunderstood how that works. I cared mostly about personally progress anyway, I managed to work my way down to less than a 3 average per hole with a total of 2896. This game is actually just something that instills a wonderful cocktail of feelings. You've presumably all heard the podcast saying the premise of just being a simply controlled ball in a series of sandy golf courses, but my personal experiences really went beyond that. It has real triumph and mastery, like most games out there. Every time I hit the ball and had to watch and wait for it to settle it actually had a really significant tension as I watched to see if it managed to stop exactly where I wanted. The ball starts slowing so much that it actually scales the tension so well when you're hoping it will stop in the exact right place. And on top of that is the unknown of what the next hole could be, an almost flat plane or a maze of catacombs you'll need 4 perfectly precise shots to navigate. It's just so good, I really don't think I'm done playing, though I think this is probably the milestone where my play slows down (especially since I can go back to PC gaming soon). It's just weird though, I don't know if I just had the right attitude going in or what but I find a lot of games really lack in making the minutae engaging and I have to consciously bear in mind the macro rewards of continued play (where the story or mechanics will develop a real pay off) but this tiny little thing has pulled me right along with it all the way.

I've heard about that from my Swedish lady, and the worst part of the anti-immigrant party is how blatant they sound and yet they don't have trouble garnering support.
