  1. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

Most of my opinions on Bowie come through the lens of my father's opinions on him (aka that he's weird but innovative.) Mostly he's told me that Bowie would come out with an album that was a good 2-3 years ahead of where music was, and by the time the rest of the industry caught up Bowie was on to something new. I don't know how accurate this is, but if it's true it makes me respect the dude even if I'm not super into his music.
  2. General Video Game Deals Thread

Hatoful Boyfriend & Dropsy are the only 2 games this year that made me cry and I recommend them both v emphatically.
  3. General Video Game Deals Thread

Dropsy is amazing and I love it and I will be Dropsy's #1 cheerleader forever.
  4. Life

I find when I start stressing about the what ifs of something, sitting down and thinking through what would actually happen if x y & z went wrong, and formulating a plan for responding to that is immensely helpful. I don't know if it helps anyone else, but it usually pulls me out of the feedback loop I get into that just destroys me otherwise.

https://www.brennancenter.org/press-release/kentucky-governor-creates-new-process-help-restore-voting-rights-170000-citizens this is fantastic, and in a country whose states are doing everything they can to strip away voting rights for people, this makes me feel a little better.
  6. Black Lives Matter

Yesterday Black Lives Matters protesters were shot at by white supremacists in front of a police department in Minneapolis. The protesters, thankfully, have had non-fatal injuries. The protesters were there because of the shooting of a young man named Jamal Clark last week by the Minneapolis police. http://www.citypages.com/news/report-white-supremacists-shoot-five-black-lives-matters-protesters-7855265

WoW has a refer a friend program, but it's 100% cosmetic items like mounts and pets & then a mutual exp buff.
  8. Life

Yeah, using your provider's website to find approved doctors is worth it.
  9. Life

I would wait until you get your insurance card from your provider as it has all the information the office will ask you for even when scheduling over the phone. Once you get that or have access to your online account which should give you the option to download & print a card I would say go for it.
  10. Social Justice

Is this a question as to what vocabulary we should use? I think it depends, both are useful in certain contexts, and I think "African American" is overused in the hopes of being welcoming to the point that it becomes an inaccurate modifier. Because Idris Elba, for example, is not African American, but he is a Black man. I think you're pretty safe as long as you use "black" as an adjective to describe a person or people rather than a noun. Avoid calling a group of humans "blacks" and instead refer to them as "Black People"
  11. Free To Play - This Topic Is Not Post To Win

I like free to play games when there is a one time charge to get rid of something annoying (a la Draw Something allowing you to pay $2 for an ad-free experience) I do not like when free to play games put their transactions behind currency. I'm okay if a way to earn that secondary money currency is "watch a 10 second ad"
  12. This forum is weird (Look a new topic!)

I got called "longtime user" on the podcast a month or so ago, and was extraordinarily flattered as I had not started posting until the 1989 conversation that Sean lead last fall/winter.
  13. This forum is weird (Look a new topic!)

What topic do you want to speak about? Often times those grab bag topics develop and flourish because individual threads can get little to no response, and people feel uncomfortable resurrecting long left alone threads. I can agree that coming in fresh, it can be daunting to see 200+ page threads. These long threads are often times large topics that benefit from not being tied to one specific topic, and rather serve to be a current event + response thread. I think you may underestimate how many people read new posts on long threads and I think it's pretty intentionally inflammatory to come into a community that exists and tell them they're doing it wrong. Especially when we do have other avenues open to members of the community, including the game jam, our slack channel, our secret santa, among others. I'm sorry you're feeling like an outsider, but have you tried participating in existing conversations? Is there a game you really like and want to talk about? Is there a book you read that you want to share with people? The users here are not one to jump down your throat if you happen to bring up something that we already discussed at length. We may direct you to the appropriate section/thread so that you can respond to our responses, but that isn't to shut down a conversation, but rather so that we remember what was written on that topic.
  14. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

I don't know if this is true in LoL, but in HoTS there is a mode that will let you try out a hero, even one not on the free rotation, against some bots and some structures so that you at least know the move sets and talents available to you before you purchase it. As a player with very shallow knowledge I kind of appreciate being funneled into one of just a handful of heroes initially. The number of heroes in Dota or LoL is pretty overwhelming for someone coming into the game, so to be guided into one of 5 rotational free heroes and given some quests you can easily complete with those heroes means I actually come back to HoTS occasionally something that did not stick with LoL or Dota.

The pettiness of the leak cuts both ways though, right? Yeah it may be small potatoes for Kotaku to report on and why would you risk your relationship with a developer/publisher for something as small as revealing that Fallout 4 would be in Boston, but why would a developer/publisher blacklist someone for reporting on a small leak? I think the development of a software product is news because enthusiast press has an audience, the same way that it's news who is suspected to be in the cast in the new Fantastic Four movie because there's an audience for it. I agree that those things are uninteresting to me, but that doesn't mean it doesn't mean something to someone.

I just dump all my socks and underwear into my drawer and never fold or pair them. I'm a loner Dottie. A rebel

I will only listen to Jordan Jesse Go when someone I really really like is on (like Linda Holmes or Glen Weldon, both of NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour podcast) I like Jordan a lot, but don't find their dynamic very entertaining. http://theadventurezone.tumblr.com/ episodes 14 -16 are the episodes where they're actually on the train with Angus. re: max fun network ads: I like the one for Judge John Hodgman where the friend does all the overly affected pronunciations of words. I also enjoy the Adventure Zone one. I think the Flophouse & Jordan Jesse Go, & Baby Genuises ones are all bad.
  18. Social Justice

So the owner you're referring to is Donald Sterling (which was one of the examples itsamoose listed.) The thing about this is that the story that got reported on was that Sterling was talking racist shit about America's favorite basketball uncle, a man whose career was cut criminally short by HIV fears, Magic Johnson. Even people who HATE the Lakers like Magic Johnson. But this was far from an isolated incidence of casual racism. The conversation came after Sterling had been accused of housing discrimination in the rental properties he owns (which is how he's rich enough to have owned a basketball team.) He then paid millions of dollars to settle out of court. (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2009/11/donald-sterling-to-pay-2725-million-to-settle-housing-discrimination-lawsuit.html ) It's well known in the league that dude is a racist. He was also super weird and did not have a good relationship with his players. I think the conversation was merely an ignition point for something that had been stacking up for a long time.

I don't mind the max fun ads actually, but see why others might not like them. I am a Max Fun donor and understand why the add still exist even if they're less than ideal.
  20. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I think that person is pretty clearly in breach of their NDA, and can likely take legal action if they know who it is who leaked it, but I don't think Kotaku, or any other reporting organization has any obligation to not print that leak. I would much rather they act independently and not let Bethesda or anyone else bully them into not covering things the way their millions of dollars PR machines want them covered. At least things come from legitimate sources as opposed to all the shit that Chris Broussard prints in sports 'journalism'
