Dealing with Someone Else's Alcholism
Treasure Goblin replied to Architecture's topic in Idle Banter
I'm by no means any kind of expert but I just wanted to chime in and say that it's really great that you got him to get out of his room and to a party. I have pretty severe anxiety issues myself, well, enough that writing this post feels confronting and I've lost more than one job because of it. Quite often just the act of going to work is taxing on your mind enough that afterwards you just NEED to be alone because you feel fatigued from dealing with people all day. That paired with self-medicating through alcohol/substance abuse can be an incredibly easy cycle to fall into, but seemingly impossible to get out of. There's also the strange feedback loop that happens in your brain sometimes which is "I'm lonely and I want to be alone." - doesn't make a lot of sense necessarily but I wouldn't say that social anxiety generally tends to on any level anyway. I think all you can do is keep encouraging him to go out and have fun with you, even if it's just coaxing him out of his room to hang out and watch a movie or eat together. You might even find that the more that you manage to get him out of the house, the easier it will get each time and the less he will feel like he needs alcohol to "cope". -
Twin Peaks Rewatch 0: The Pre-Episode
Treasure Goblin replied to Chris's topic in Twin Peaks Rewatch Episodes
I'm really excited for this podcast; I consider Twin Peaks a really fantastic show but I haven't seen it since it was released here as a big gold DVD box set when I was probably 16 or 17. I've been holding off watching it again in case I go back and realise that my love for it was basically a product of having a stupid teenage brain that hadn't absorbed as much media as my (stupid) adult brain has, but this cast is giving me a great excuse to pick it up again. I really look forward to everyones insightful discussion both on the cast and in the forums. -
I don't have much to contribute but I'd just like to say this thread makes me exceptionally happy. I'm really glad that the Thumbs forums are a safe space for queer folks, it means a lot to me. So, thanks everyone <3

I heard about this story, but I decided against watching the video or reading the youtube comments because I knew what i'd find would probably gross me out more than I need to be right now. My heart goes out to the victims and their families though. I also found out one of my supervisors at work is an MRA, which is pretty weird and i've never encountered a MRA in person before (to my knowledge).

Idle Thumbs 159: Wilson's Ghoulish Countenance
Treasure Goblin replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Thanks everyone for the great cast! Jake's pig noises were fantastic. As usual I was super excited when I heard Danielle was on the cast, especially because I, too, have a soft spot for animal-themed puzzle platformers. I also appreciate the advice given by the cast in regards to the reader mail about dealing with casual sexism when playing games with friends. I've experienced a bit of this myself (albeit with a slightly younger age group since most of my friends are in their early-mid 20s). These people for the most part are intelligent people. As far as they're aware, they're just shooting the shit while playing with their buddies. Most of the time everything's fine and I have fun with them, but occasionally a term's thrown out that makes me feel gross/uncomfortable. I've struggled with not wanting to appear like i'm on my soapbox dictating what is right or wrong (/pooping on the party), but also not wanting to have to deal with people making bullshit jokes about rape. I don't really have much to add, just wanted to thank everyone for their thoughtful responses on the issue, it's given me some food for thought and some ideas on how to approach this situation in the future. -
Found this gem on the front page of one of my favourite blogs (bad Sci-Fi and Fantasy book cover art) http://www.goodshowsir.co.uk/2014/05/her-majestys-wizard/

I played Morrowind for the first time last year (it came out during a time where I wasn't playing games much, but I enjoyed Oblivion and Skyrim so I knew I would like it). I really enjoyed the world a lot more than that of Oblivion and Skyrim, I think because not only did the world feel more rich and full of things to do, but also because it was quite alien in aesthetic, which is a nice change from the typical fantasy environment. I got 90 hours in when I had a weird crash and when I reloaded the game my saves were all from about 35 hours in - crushing. I haven't touched it since, but reading this thread is inspiring me to go back and play it again, maybe with some of the more "essential" mods since the first time through was vanilla.

Hi there, I've been lurking for a while and a thumbs fan for a few years now. I have pretty severe anxiety, so I find things like posting on forums and playing games online with people I don't know personally freaks me out, but I really like this community so I'm hoping to slowly remedy that. I'm really into RPGs and rogue-like-like-like-likes (FTL, Spelunky, Binding of Isaac, etc) at the moment, but like all types of video (space) games. Oh, and I'm 23 from Melbourne, Australia if anyone cares to know. Looking forward to posting more in the future!
