  1.

I can't believe there wasn't a topic for this already, also the release date for this is the 10th of November.

Here's all the cool things about this RPG:

    • The world was conquered by an evil/authoritarian overlord and he/she now rules with an iron fist, strict laws and peace in their lands. You play as some kind of roaming judge/jury/lawyer/diplomat/executioner in the employ of the government. Also magic apocalypse

    • It's a shorter RPG, which still means around 20 hours but it's suppose to have micro and macro choices and repercussions, like Alpha Protocol, where you could basically get anyone to be your friend or enemy by the end of the game

    • The tone/vibe it has seems really similar to the book series, The Black Company

They have a development blog here: https://blog.tyrannygame.com/

It has a few design posts, mostly it seems to be short stories about characters, some world building like the overlord's laws:

Kyros’ Peace: Your life belongs to the Overlord if you vow fealty, and cannot be taken from you except by the Overlord. Legally this means that surrendering in the midst of battle should make Kyros soldiers stop killing you, as your life does not belong to them. It also grants Archons, as extensions of Kyros’ will, the right to conscript citizens into their service as soldiers, mages, or agents. As a Fatebinder you are an extension of Kyros’ Will, and have the right to order the execution of those guilty of breaking the law.

The Magician’s Folly: If a mage inadvertently causes harm or death due to the unknowable perils of magic, the mage will not be held liable if the magic was used for the glory of the Overlord. Many believe this law grants mages more rights in Kyros’ Empire, but they are wrong. Mages must belong to sanctioned guilds under the supervision and control of an Archon. Any use of magic, even a spell as simple as lighting a candle, must occur for the glory of Kyros. To do otherwise means death.

Vows Made in Kyros’ Name: Any vow or expression made using Kyros’ name is a binding legal contract. Breaking such a vow is punishable by death. A statement as simple as, “By Kyros, that man is an idiot!” places the speaker in dire peril. An enemy who hears that and can gather both witnesses to your vow, and proof that the man in question is not an idiot, can have you executed.

There's an article on Kotaku about the development history of the game/Obsidian, it being the game that nearly sank them, before the Pillars of Eternity kickstarter

    http://kotaku.com/tyranny-emerged-from-the-game-that-nearly-sank-obsidian-1767592617

It makes it look like this went

    Fury (2006) -> Defiance (2009) -> Stormlands (2011) -> Tyranny (2016)

    Also the publisher is Paradox.

  2. I don't think I've played a game that had everything that takes damage die in one hit but having it as a not 100% chance.

Tying capability to HP just seems to still include HP bars but lots of games have done it I think. Thinking about it, all the Heroes of Might&Magic games, The Banner Saga, probably some RPG games, I can't think of more right now.

  3. Startopia had some combat, but it's really basic, bad and infrequent. It's about the level of Theme Hospital/Park in how things behave so maybe not ant farm enough but I really enjoyed it. It doesn't have any direct control over characters, or well the Dungeon Keeper Imp level of control over your scuzzer droids.

  4. Funny little thing about this game that I discovered from reddit via Tom Francis' twitter account.

There's a point where you find a document that gives a hint for a safe combination as "a combination of Bromine and Bromide" in an underground drug lab run by two people.  Someone brute forced the password and discovered the actual combination for the safe is 3556.  Bromine is atomic number 35, so that's that, but Bromide is not an element on the periodic table.

However, 56 is the atomic number for Barium.  And it so happens that Bromine and Barium are the two elements that are used in the logo for Breaking Bad.  So the thought is now that whoever wrote this may have been looking at the Breaking Bad logo, decided to derive the puzzle from those two elements, and then somehow tripped over what the actual element Ba was.

It's not very likely, but could those be non english names for chemical elements?

I found this video on Deus Ex really interesting, it's the last (3rd) one of a series, there's two for DX1 and DX2:IW too.

  5. Here's a really interesting video with thoughts about NMS, exploration, how it has too much game in it, etc.

It has spoilers, I'm thinking most of the people discussing it here will find it interesting.

  6. Reyturner, Horza and me are going to play some Netrunner but the whole card pool is gigantic. So we're going to play with only core cards at first. Every month or whatever we'll add an expansion (datapack).

We're going to play on http://www.jinteki.net/

Core cards are listed here https://netrunnerdb.com/en/set/core/images, also a good site to make a deck.

If anyone else wants to join in and play some Netrunner, Slack's the place to find who is up for it.

I'll gladly teach anyone the rules/how to use the UI on jinteki/netrunnerdb. There's also some starter decks so that you don't need to build decks right from the start.

Also a cool link for 100% bespoke, artisinal netdecks on a per pack basis http://stimhack.com/tournament-decklists/

  7. Speaking of games that let 8 people play with 4 controllers, Micro Machines V3 (a PS1-era game from 1997) does exactly that and is a blast.

I really enjoy games that have this kind of split controller functionality. Push Me Pull You, which came out this year, also has it.

I loved the DOS Micromachines, we were 6 kids playing it, one on mouse, two on a gamepad and three on a keyboard. But to prevent soft locking, the cars would constantly accelerate, so you had 3 keys, left/right/brake. Hard to actually stand still so the dumb sponge in bathtub obstacle, where it floats around and you need to stay on, put the race on hold for 10 minutes as 6 people tried to get across, unsuccessfully, due to pushing and giggling.

  8. Ahhh that was nice.

I feel like this video exemplifies the best storytelling aspects of Overwatch in general. It's silent. It lets the world breathe by showing without telling. The focus is on the environmental details, and the expression comes from the animation and sound, rather than quippy dialogue and lore and superheroes doing superpower things.

It's just: here's a little story from this beautiful world we created. (Which the other videos sort of do as well, of course, but I like that this one is somehow both more and less outrageous than any of them.)

Now if you'll excuse me, I think there's something in my eye...

Yeah, it's extremely uncharacteristic of Blizzard.

  9. Latest release date is Q1 2017, they're supposedly only translating and polishing now.

I found two interviews of Brian Fargo at Gamescom, the first one starts with some german but it's in english, the second one I didn't like as much as the first one. There doesn't seem to be much new info in the 1st one but it's a recap of stuff.

The 2nd one is garbage, don't bother unless you aren't phased by someone translating every question and answer into german right after they're said.

  10. Listening to this week's Bombcast reminded me that Cheat Engine exists, and there's a cheat table that strips away some of the crafting and inventory bullshit. Might be something to look at if all you want to just explore.

Take care to not get VAC banned.
