  1. wrong thread

I am quite amazed at how long this thread has grown. Perhaps time has proven it right?

Holy crap Wolf Hall is fantastic. I haven't seen a show this absorbing for so long. I don't think I've seen a show this distinctly great since In The Flesh or earlier episodes of The Borgias. Part of it might be that I typically only watch shows with my partner and we rarely binge on any. Still this show feels amazing.

Yeah I think I remember doing the same patterns so maybe it's the way they balanced hard mode + my aim in that game or something else. Wolfenstein was for me a pure pleasure to play and I think when it was hectic combat it really called back to what I liked most from the Killzone series. That said I played most of the game stealthily creeping through corridors and laughing at how the thrown knives could 1 hit all but the heaviest armoured enemies.
  4. Life

We moved into the new house. We're exhausted but the main hurdle's done. Crap that was a huge day. At least most of the inevitable moving problems got sorted with the rest getting figured out soon. Sadly for the short term we don't have any water connections for our washing machine! But hey we've got a dishwasher! Haven't had one of those since I was like 11 (~'06).

I'm finding some issues with half life 2. I haven't always been a fan of it's pacing and coming back to it I'm finding the boat sections kinda tedious in places. But the biggest problem I have with it is the shooting. I'm finding that the pistol and first smg just feel so limp against everything the game throws at you for the first hours. I get power curves but one dude easily takes most of your 18 bullet pistol clip and the smg actually seems to add more time to kill with an extra 20 bullets needed. Even the head crabs feel spongey. It feels like they went too far in making sure the player felt weak especially when you get the one shot kill magnum halfway through the boat section. They could have kept the guns powerful but severely limited the ammo count; as it is I have pea shooters with hundreds of bullets to spare for them. I just realised that I'm playing on hard so maybe that's the issue? They could have screwed up the play experience on hard? I'll come back to the game on normal and see for myself.

I started and finished Wolfenstein: The New Order yesterday because I'm horribly indulgent/wasteful with time management. I liked it a lot! it's certainly not the best singleplayer shooter I've played but it's the best I have since Half Life 2 or F.E.A.R.. It did have some problems from grindy encounters, weirdly paced checkpoints, odd hubworld fetch quests, or weirdly on for too long/too sadistic executions/torture scenes. But I felt like what the game was trying to serve ended up being more satisfying than it's pitfalls. Still I think it goes near the top of my very fun SP shooter list. I think it's about time to replay HL2, some of the F.E.A.R.'s, WH:Space marine, and E.Y.E. Divine Cybermancy.
  7. Life

Chilling outside and an Owl casually starts flying around the garden. I hear Morepork pretty frequently but I think this is the first time I've seen one. It was a really serene moment. What isn't making me feel serene is finding out that DoucheV and co. are holding meetups for their group all over the country. My entire facebook wall seems lit up with people warning each other to be really careful in town on Saturday.
  8. Far Cry PRIMAL

So when I saw the trailer (with the witch doctor and the blood-skull soup) the other day I was thinking wow this is so dumb. But after reading an RPS preview I'm actually kinda excited. Especially if they're ditching towers and introducing beastmaster style gameplay. Being a prehistoric druid sounds really fun.
  9. Finally. I've been wanting to play Go for ages but no one else did!

Yeah she's also the reason he's in Auckland, NZ for the premier of The Hateful Eight. I'm pretty sure he wrote Death Proof and her role in it in part because he enjoyed working with her so much as The Bride's stunt double in Kill Bill.
  11. Making Mr. Remo Uncomfortable

I hope Patrick gets his lock of hair. I'm pretty keen to reap the benefits of any thumbs related dark ritual.
  12. Movie/TV recommendations

I rather enjoyed The Hateful Eight. Contrary to some I feel like the film did well with it's second half. Although if it was going to be a slow character driven burner the whole time I wouldn't have objected. But then it would have been full Reservoir Dogs wouldn't it? I did feel pretty uncomfortable during certain parts of the film. Part of one section was because I was watching this in a room full of strangers as much as the other reasons. It was fun seeing a Kiwi actress in a Hollywood movie have an accent that was Full Kiwi for a change. There's only so many times you can bear Cliff Curtis, Lucy Lawless, or Karl Urban talking in American. In fact that's one thing I really liked about the Star Wars Prequels. The idea that the head of Naboo's security, Jango & Boba Fett the Mandalorians, and all of (at least the first) Clone Troopers were Maori with KIWI AS accents was really fun.

Wowzer you guys are great at this stuff. I love that latest painting Brannigan.
  14. wrong thread

Well maybe we need a right thread? How else are we supposed to know?
  15. Star Wars VII - Open spoilers

I don't know how many of you are watching the pretty decent Star Wars Rebels series. It's resuming it's run in the next week or so and the trailers suggests things are getting a lot more heated and mystical than before. Anyway a more interesting detail (from the trailer) for non watchers might be that they're doubling down on Kylo Ren's light sabre design with a predecessing iteration. Oh and it has younger versions of both Organas doing their thing. Ps will this become the general Star Wars thread or is this the Wrong Thread for that?

  17. Movie/TV recommendations

So I saw The Revenant and holy crap was that good. I think it might be fighting with Fury Road, Brazil, and Once Upon A Time In The West for my favourite movie. My partner thought it had some pacing issues but I was too absorbed in the slow drawn out shots to notice. I don't think it's a perfect movie necessarily just one that really grabbed me. I can't wait to see it on a higher resolution though. There were also a bunch of moments when I could plainly see the ripples in the theatre screen which kinda threw me out of the movie magic.
  18. How do you organize your steam library?

Eh I just browse by recent and let the 5 or so games I play frequently leapfrog each other. It's not the most efficient method but I don't think I'd have it another way.
  19. RIP David Bowie

Well there he goes. One of the greatest modern legends. The only superstar worthy of the title. I'd been idly thinking about when he'd die while waiting for the release of Blackstar. The song Dollar Days has been quietly haunting me for the past few days as well. I just feel kind of deflated about it. He did so much and he showed so many people that they could just be themselves or be their inner weirdo. I will miss him. But I guess it feels natural.
  20. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

So how is everyone feeling Blackstar? I haven't given it a dedicated listen but I'm having a lot of fun with it.
  21. DOTA 2

Hey thanks for the advice! I got back into it with a weaver game which was decent. Then a friend of mine asked for a match or two so after two games where our entire team abandoned by 7 minutes for pretty flimsy reasons we ended up with a decent long game. I had a decent run of Abbadon until the team left but the real gem was Mirana. I was pretty crap with the arrows and we were crushed by the enemy offlane but I managed to do less of a bad job as our mid so the flames didn't get too hot hah. Still had some good moments like I managed to just ward the entire jungle while we were pushed to t3s which evened the game a lot with some choice tfs. Had some clutch ability moments too while I had no clue what I was doing but the team seemed to think it was deliberate so I'll take the credit :{D
  22. Movie/TV recommendations

Werner Herzog had a fun stint as a Rick and Morty character in season 2 FYI. Anyway I'm just here waiting for the new Venture Bros season (31st Jan) while hoping that the Deadpool movie will be good.
  23. Some authors have cut down the amounts of words on a page to great effect to transmit feelings like whimsy, detachment, or hopelessness. House of Leaves or The Luminaries spring to mind. Infinite Jest did the opposite to good effect as well for things like mania. Begrudge it's overuse maye but it's just as experimental as anything else going into Twine games right now.
  24. Do you have favorite game mount?

Probably the Mako from ME 1 or The Warthogg From mmo's it'd have to be a flying carpet from wow or a hover board from wildstar.
