  1. Seeing all those little tutorials I definitely wanted to create an environment I could play around with some ideas in. I think, my take away, is that I am not really ready to dedicate all that much time to being a game artist.

The first time I baked the lights it was an overnight job. The second time I left in running overnight and it was crashing out because it used all my RAM. I started looking into how to optimize the process, Unity's tutorial on baked lighting optimization is mega huge, you have to go per object, and yeah, okay, definitely not ready to spend that much time on game art :P

  2. Pretty simple, I grab the surface normal of the model, and based on how up it's pointing blend between two colours (white for up, blue for sideways). it's pretty accidental it looks as good as it does, when you play the game you'll probably see a few blemishes too.

So far, I like ASE, but i have really only scratched the surface. It's probably a 6/10 for intuitiveness, which, ain't bad. Looks to be a pretty powerful tool.

  3. I enjoyed reading your thoughts on the plug-ins.

I wonder if the problem with extensibility is a problem you with the specific plug-ins, or a problem with all plug-ins. You said you were unfamiliar with the code base, which would be true of all plug-ins. That said, does the code make it easy to get familiar with? Is it commented?

I get what they were trying to up El's "power" or whatever in episode 7 but it didn't really work for me. That whole goofy band of misfits thing was dumb...maybe if it weren't a one episode thing I would have eventually cared about any of them, but I didn't and also I was constantly distracted by that one guy's stupid mohawk.

I am curious if anyone thought that group of characters was "cool". I am not sure if they do not appeal to me because I'm too young for the nostalgia of their look, or if genuinely they're just kind of doofy.

  5. There's a few quotes in this article that suggest the show runners knew that episode would be divisive.

The seventh episode of Stranger Things 2 deviates from the rest of the season. It doesn’t take place in Hawkins; the main party of pre-teen boys don’t make an appearance; and we’re forced to spend close to an hour of viewing time with a group of people we’ll never see again. Director Shawn Levy told Collider they were aware the episode would be divisive because it moves the story out of Hawkins. Levy added that the Duffer brothers want to work toward building a bigger world.

“Whether or not people feel that episode was entirely successful ... the Duffers want to take some swings, and they know that they’re not gonna please everybody,” Levy said.

In a separate interview, the Duffer brothers added to Levy’s comments, telling Entertainment Weekly that the seventh episode was designed to not be a filler episode.

“Our test of the episode was we tried to pull it out of the show just to make sure that we needed it because I didn’t want it in there as filler — even though some critics are accusing us of doing that,” Matt said. “But Eleven’s journey kind of fell apart, like the ending didn’t work, without it. So I was like, whether this works or not, we need this building block in here or the whole show is going to collapse. It’s not going to end well. The Mind Flayer is going to take over Hawkins.”

The small town setting just has such a universality, relatable quality to it. It's something the adventure movies in the 80s had figured out.

  6. I have been telling a lot of people to watch American Vandal based on my enjoyment of it, and backing it up with the commentary and meaning expressed in this thread.

Especially considering most the stuff the creators had done before were College Humor shorts.

You're throwing a lot of shade at a group of writers who have been producing good sketch comedy for the last 15 years.

Found it really weird that "with great power comes great responsibility" wasn't a theme at all. "Being Spider-Man is just really cool, actually. All the problems come from not getting to tell people you're cool," seemed more what it was about, at no real cost to our hero. Olly Moss suggested at one point that the best way to write Tony Stark out of the MCU is to have him deliver the Uncle Ben advice to Spider-Man before he goes, and now that's all I want and know I won't get.

I feel like "with great power comes great responsibility" wouldn't have made much sense at all. In this universe, aliens invaded earth, Norse gods are real dudes, and Iron Man can blow up tanks by pointing his palms at them. The point being, relatively speaking, Spiderman's powers aren't all that great.

I like this a lot! It gives room for the character to explore what the powers mean on his own. Test his own moral compass against what is right and wrong. Find the responsibilities for himself, as they are reflected on his friends, family, and neighbourhood.

I would probably agree that Spidey comes out pretty directly unaffected by his actions, but, isn't that kind of what makes a low stakes drama work? We kind of know Spiderman will be okay at the end of the day, but his actions are reflected in where the other characters are left off and how their relationships have changed.

  8. I thought Spiderman Home Coming was pretty great. I liked that the bad guys were repurposing alien technology. I liked Michael Keaton's performance. I liked that it told a story that was low key, not the fate of the world. Pretty good Marvel movie.

  9. I think a critical look at the mechanics and game design of Zeno Clash would end in a "don't play it" result. It's definitely an imperfect game, but what I value in Zeno Clash is its "outsiderness", it's a weird imperfect piece of art.

Have you played any other ACE Team games? They kind of always have this problem, and this being their first I would imagine is the most egregious example.
