  1. Other podcasts

I've been recording a video games podcast with my two friends Simon and Lucas. We gave it the worst name we could think of, Pixel Pals. The three of us all work in the games industry, and we all live in Toronto, and we're hoping that those two facts will give us a unique voice. We're three episodes deep. Episodes 1 & 2 are pretty terrible, but we are content with how Episode 3 turned out. If anyone has valuable feedback, I'd be happy to hear it. You can check us out on iTunes, subscribe to our RSS, follow us on Tumblr, or listen to the most recent episodes on Soundcloud. If you do any of those, please make Episode 3 the first you listen to.
  2. Screenshots. Shots of your screen.

I've been playing Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, and they do not hold back when it comes to the colour grading. I super love how they use red/green and teal/rust complementary colours. Or cold colours with purple lighting: Or not shy away from entirely monotone:
  3. Intoxicated:

That sounds pretty good. There was a time when President's Choice was making a cranberry ginger ale and that was the best thing to mix with cheap whiskey. It was also bright pink.
  4. "Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic " It's crazy how quickly a subtitle turns my childhood favourite Age of Wonders series into a Game of War: Fire Age name.
  5. Photos of things

It looks like a cyberpunk monument valley.
  6. Intoxicated:

Rye and Ginger is popular around these parts, take rye whiskey and ginger ale and mix in similar portions to Rum and Coke. Definitely a much drier drink than a lot of cocktails. Use Canadian Club and Canada Dry for the authentic* experience. I try to keep cheap whiskey around for this kind of drink, also really helped me finish off a bottle of spiced whiskey I got for christmas. *believe it or not, Canadians don't associate either brand as any sort of national icon or point of pride.
  7. I often recommend Construct 2 as a game making tool for newbies, but its been years since I last used it. Would there be any interest in watching a stream of me navigating the intro tutorial and then maybe trying to add additional features that the viewers come up with, interested?
  8. I had my email read on this week's Bombcast, which is pretty cool. Seriously, what's the deal with grown people riding razor scooters in San Francisco?

A while ago I made my 7DFPS entry First Person Soar, a bird flight simulator. In addition to thinking this myself, some commenters suggested it would be a cool VR experience. I had been given a Google cardboard at GDC, and integrating that took about 10 minutes (moving to Unity 5 and compiling to Android were the bigger challenges). Then I figured I would be able to use my MOGA Pro controller with the game. No dice. Requires a custom SDK. I download and try to integrate their example with my code, but it doesn't work. I'm just giving up on that. I'm able to plug in my 360 pad and it works perfect, except for it's wired nature. Well, at least i got to play my own game in VR.
  10. IRC is definitely something I just have running at all times, because yeah, the amount of activity really ebbs and flows.
  11. Life

My friend and I went to go see Jupiter Ascending last night. We got to the theatre an hour early. Sold Out. Am I dreaming? What is real?
  12. Wizards plus diversifiers seems like a cool way to go. We could call the diversifiers "schools of magic". I agree with you about the voting thing Dino, except I thought that we could have one of the votes be for rewarding the inexperienced trying something new, it would of course be called, "Hooray for You!".
  13. Bespoke exuberant wizard puffins.
  14. Dinosaurs was talking in the IRC about maybe doing some streaming of development as a live tutorial. 2 ways I was thinking I could help would be to create a very basic photoshop tutorial focusing on the super basics of photoshop, cutting, cropping, resizing etc. The other would be to set up a skeleton project that has some very basic gameflow, say something like Start, end Round, and Restart sort of flow. What do you folks think?
  15. It's been a while since I've run it but Construct 2 has a pretty light load from what I remember. Game Maker is possibly pretty light too.
  16. Are there any major holidays / events on the horizon that would hold people back from participating? I'd imagine 2 weeks is very generous for most of life's considerations.
  17. I'm super down for this game jam. I'm willing to help out in an expert role. I'd be interested in knowing what technical barriers people are thinking they have. For example, "I don't know how to code", "I don't know how to use Unity", "I don't know how to use Photoshop". Oh, and also, I generally like themes or other points of inspiration and constraint. It kind of ensures that people are creating for the jam, but more importantly imposes a constraint on the project. Designers need constraints.

UI is the worst stuff. I'm curious if anyone knows of anyway that making UI could be made less bespoke to your game. I'm kind of hoping that I'm just ignorant to something powerful in Unity. But like seriously, the last game I made professionally was like 99% bespoke UI work.
  19. Life

Glad to hear you had friends here! Sent you a tweet, hopefully we can grab a drink. The value of being honest with people, and the value of reaching out to people are ideas that have really been underpinning my week at GDC. I signed up for these forums about a year ago, and being able to read the writing all you incredibly smart people post here is fantastic. Add to that all my buddies who hang out in the IRC channel and keep me entertained while working. I'm just kind of feeling that I need to tell everyone in the community here that their presence and contribution is a genuine positive force in my life. So, thanks <3

Solo GDC is kind of rough yeah. If you want to meet up or just have someone with common interests to talk to shoot me an email, Spencer@gamehive.com and we can try and make something happen.
  21. Life

    It sux without you ;___________;
  22. Life

I don't know if that's a good freaking out or bad freaking out. If bad, don't worry, everyone is super friendly, it's a really uplifting community of game devs enjoying being around other people like them. If good freak out, yah! GET HYPE BOYYEEEEEEE! GDC is awesome.

Yeah Dino, I thought maybe we needed a "Professional Game Making Day" thread so I can have a place to complain about my job For your odomoter, doesn't it make more sense for the tens digit to flip over as the unit digit moves from 9 to 0? Isn't that how they work?
