  1. Recently completed video games

world 7 was always a problem area for me. there are a few unforgiving stages that i dont know if i've ever cleared (engage Cloud Skip!) Most of my play throughs would consist of world 1-1 -> 7-1 - engage warp whistle to world 8

  3. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

I have also been having a great time with 80 days still. My wife has also taken an interest in playing as well.
  4. Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

I have tried to double down on my Isaac progression as of late. I am picking characters with the intent to unlock their varied end-game items and have done pretty good as of late Finally opened up the negative 2 days ago and cleared the lamb tonight. I was doing so much damage that I didn't need to know a whole lot about the fight which is fine, it'll be much harder on a starved run in the future i am up to 92 hrs (although i suspect several of those are paused when in a dota match) and hit the right combo today for golden god which is nice!
  5. DOTA 2

A kind Undying told me i should go back to playing bots and informed the other team that this must be my first dota match ever. i cant wait for year beast mode to be over. The full set drop is so tempting and the super creep mechanic is really neat...but the insta-lock lords (zeus, undying, warlock, bristle mostly) & when someone has bought enough points to get the infinite zeus ult aura is such horseshit. I am 1-7 in the mode, and it accounts for 6 of my last 8 losses, and therefore my last 20 matches are 11-2 & 1-6YB Anyone who hasn't played or kept up with the mode - There is a spawned "beast" that is essentially a Super Creep (ref: -SC in wc3 mod) and you can spend allocated points to upgrade & use global and localized spells. These points are partially dolled out to everyone who plays, but additional points can be earned by winning matches & by buying CM Arcana These points can grossly overpower a team by allowing them to cast global silence, heal, thunderstrike, or some others on command. Additionally you can level up the beast to get more powerful and gain other abilities (stampede, mek, taunt, etc) The game-breaking total sucko part is the lvl3 Support beast aura gives 50% chance to reset CD on cast when within +/-500 range. So what does this do? A team member that has either won a lot...or accumulated a lot of points plays zeus, levels beast to lvl3, casts ult to potentially infinite degree of nuking. Warlock will drop 2..3...4 golems, or Lina will laguna blade every one on the team. This is really just a complain rant, the mode ends March 1, and i just shouldnt play it anymore. Hopefully the next mode wont be pay-to-win & a bit more balanced
  6. Homeworld Remastered

check out those hot alt + ctrl key strokes! Youth these days don't even know how to make their fingers make those kinds of combinations. I've actually got some young people that work for me that really struggle with the pinky-LCTRL + shift/alt. I would like to suspect it is a PC game generational thing - they can index finger controller trigger just fine...but wouldn't know how to add a unit to a control group or some other complex RTS maneuver. In turn when i tell them to ctrl-shift-R to reverse a spline their fingers look like a weird seized claw shape
  7. Homeworld Remastered

the temptation is very high. I only play campaigns, i have to imagine there are phenomenal people out there in the multiplayer portion i think i am going to wait for a hefty sale though before i pull the trigger. I have have enough other untouched product to get through, ive also got Void Destroyer that just went final release from a kick-starter that need to explore and give a fair shot
  8. Other podcasts

i am in a constant state of cull & add for podcasts. i generally get left alone for long swaths of time at work, but some weeks i'll only get through a few hours of content. and happy to report I added the latest episode of Justice Points to my queue and really enjoyed it! I thought points were articulate, intelligent, and great all around balance of content (game talk, feminist perspective, general culture, etc). Bonus points because you speak clearly and slowly it translates to great double-speed listening (which is my preferred mode) I look forward to more in the future, and if I ever clear my podcast backlog I'll certainly go through some of the back catalog as well So thanks for the suggestion and plug
  9. wonderful, thank you! i will put these on my watch list
  10. I think it is nearing the time to retire these ear buds (Klipsche S4) The left one is starting to crackle. I only wear them at work for podcasts, and usually only the right ear so I can hear the rest of the office - so I can certainly extend the life with the crackle for a long while Anyone with <$30 recommendations? I don't want an in-line microphone or controls - which seems to be more of the norm these days
  11. Super Metroid Appreciation Station

with all the excited talk about Metroid i also finished Super Metroid this weekend for the first time. I think we had rented it on the SNES many years ago, but never put any serious effort into it. Control mechanics (wall jumping especially) were a little challenging, but thoroughly enjoyed it. I'll probably end up playing it again for a better time ending, although I don't think i'd beat the end boss w/o a couple reserve tanks and most of the energy tanks I played all the Primes at their release, this talk has me thinking about getting the disks back from my brother. I have a save for Prime 1 100% on hard going that never finished - I think stuck on the Ripley fight.
  12. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

The regular sail is a good reminder to how artificially long that game became on initial release There is a lot of information to gather from the fishes in addition to filling out your map. I didnt want to use a walk through, but made a spread sheet i filled in from my phone as i got new info & whether i had cleared the mini-treasure on the tiertiary islands As a recommendation get the speed sail as soon as you can, makes the traversal system so much better. Double sailing speed & the wind is always at your back so do not need to do the tune every time or tack back and forth
  13. Life

I have switched from evacuation map hell to airport way-finding hell Some design firm did a +/-550 page document for the rebranding of some terminals of Newark Airport (EWR) - but completely blew off the airport's 200pg branding usage & guideline book So I've type-set and made grids for ~150 signs based on the design firm & got the call today to switch to the Airport Authority style which involves some-to-major tweaking of each page Deadlines dont change, just the anxiety to get them done I feel like we haven't had a respite from some sort of "crunch" in years. Pretty amazing considering the success rate of our projects, high margin, low turn over, and generally under-staffed nature of the company. Only in the last year has other departments filling their positions to a more normal quota. I don't think I'd even know what to do if there was "down" or free time Anyone in Chicago know anything about signs and/or corel draw, need to bolster my resume drawer
  14. I Had A Random Thought...

On the animated track Land Before Time & An American Tail were hot vids in our house (originals, never seen the extended universe of either brand). Other notable hits to pique everyone's nostalgia memory - Fern Gully, All Dogs go to Heaven, and Little Nemo. Of course all the Disney films were popular tapes too, but as a kid i didn't differentiate between studios - but knew there was a difference in quality of animation & movie between a Once Upon a Forest and say Lion King I also feel like there was a large amount of TV piracy in my youth. My Ma must have made a dozen or so VHS tapes of cartoons to pacify the three of us (all boys) - including (but certainly not limited to) weird Flintstones & Jetsons crossover, batman & scooby doo cross over, TMNT, yogi bear, after-school specials, etc Eventually we got a nintendo and passive cartoon watching morphed into active game playing
  15. I Had A Random Thought...

I'm with Tegan and Apple Cider here, not an ET fan at all there is a home movie VHS with my father coming in with an ET mask, long sheet & flash light in belly area doing the classic "ET" voice that freaked me out...and put my brother into a meltdown (+/-4 & 3 yrs old respectively) I don't know what the intention was, but if the goal was to have neither one of us watch that film again - huge success I've havent watched past the opening scene since, I wonder what kind of reaction my brother would have
  16. I Had A Random Thought...

My brother and i practically wore the the tape out on our copy of Dune As an adult i have a completely different fondness for the film and books - but at first glance when i saw it as a +/-8r old it is a cool sci-fi flick with (at the time) slick visuals, some action scenes, creepy - but not super scary elements (baron's face and rebban's head). There is a lot for a kid to chew on in that movie, many many questions come up - due to some bad exposition and assumed book knowledge few are answered. Maybe pique some interest in the books then too! I feel like i also watched Police Academy and Problem Child a lot as a kid. Power Rangers were pretty rad
  17. Job Hunting

That pretty well decides itself there. The corporate overlords aside there are real people on the ground who would be directly effected. Even if the turn over rate is high the immediate short-handed shift(s) and stress put on former team members sounds pretty substantial. When I was working retail through college and someone just up and quit it was an infuriating process. Mostly because our store was a single-attendant shift and the absent person meant doubles or extra unplanned working days. It still happens in my place of work now, a shop or field installation guy decides done working and vanishes - those jobs they were working on get hosed along with their former peers. I am obviously pro-fair warning quitters, i know if one of my artists decided to quit on a Friday it would wise to not put me as a reference. The same goes in reverse, if I was to hire someone who was working - and then magically able to start the following few days I'd wonder if that was omen of things to come
  18. Plug your shit

300 S Wacker - Chicago IL Design related plug! ESI is the design company that came to us (sign vendor) to figure this monstrosity out. So i didnt have the joy of tediously drawing the map over again, i had the tedious job of making sure each stroke was wide enough to cut & install. Also the pattern for the wall painters was a pretty neat grid to put together they mostly focus on the exterior, but the interior is the real interesting element. 1/2" aluminum all cut and puzzled together and back lit with color changing RGB lights So its more of an secondary/adjacent plug. but pretty neat seeing our work recognized anywhere, usually signs & sign work get over shadowed by general architecture - or like this case all the credit goes to the design firm who dreamt up the idea - spent someone else's money & used other firms to figure how to make it even possible
  19. Dota Today 16: Blitz

spectacular episode, Will is very well spoken, smart, and friendly to fans - a great example of the best of the Dota community. I hope his German endeavors work out and can further help the scene grow positively Also, the new format is great. Talking about Dota on the higher level and as a developing large-scale community is very interesting; i love examining patch notes and butterfly on an agility hard carry too - but this has been great last few eps.
  20. Life

They didn't know if it should be portrait or landscape orientation, so now its a next week project. I did start making a custom font for Newark airport so that's something useful
  21. Life

making evacuation maps is the most tedious and doubles as my least favorite part of my job. Particularly maps for hotels, they require a map behind each door with a different "You Are Here" indicator, room # identified, and if multiple routes the optimal one used This location has +/- 330 suites
  22. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

After a short hiatus I returned to SMB3DW last night and beat Champion Road. It was roughly 60 lives through all nights of trying and experimenting with best character & execution, the annoying part was going out to 3-1 every time to get a new Tanooki suit (i dont suspect i'll ever beat it without the float move, rarely make it past the football guys w/o item) I've gotta finish the marathon house next, and am probably going to go back and beat each level with each character - but this may wait for a competent partner to do 2-at-a-time
  23. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

i just bought earthbound last weekend, thats fairly aggravating but my own fault Majora's Mask on the Wii seems like an interesting...but then i'd have to load into that emulator every time & find something to control it with
  24. I Had A Random Thought...

this was spectacular use of time friday. thank you i feel much more productive and cannot wait to teach an offspring a very nuanced way to tying shoes & pissing off a kindergarten teacher in the future also, due to a change in dress policy I cannot wear "gym shoes" any more so get to pull out a slick shoe-horn inherited from my grandfather much more frequently. i feel like it should come with an AARP card...but that tech sure is simple and works great.
  25. The threat of Big Dog

I was hoping that lion during halftime was an animatronic...fairly disappointed seeing the operators underneath
