  1. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

I was hoping that would be the case, but I'm looking at my mission list, and the only ones open to me are repeats (one Subsistence, one Extreme mode). Kind of a disappointment. I'll keep going for now, but I don't know if I'm terribly motivated to get to the "true ending" or whatever.
  2. Frog Fractions 2: A Fractional Kickstarter Campaign

I thought maybe there'd be something in the page's code, but I didn't see anything. I suppose its up to people in Berkeley to figure out what's going on. EDIT: From reddit/r/isthisfrogfractions2: "The address given on the site for The Ashby Brewery + Indie Game Studio is actually the Berkeley Bowl which is a fine grocery store, but almost certainly not FF2."
  3. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

Of course there was a Dunkey. .
  4. This is not related to the ongoing MGS discussion at all, but I wanted to chime in to defend the Breckon family's basement pantry. My parents' house has a decent sized kitchen, but the cabinets never had enough room for everything. The solution was to have a pantry in the basement for extra stuff that didn't fit. I have lots of memories of my mom cooking dinner and realizing that she was running low on some ingredient. She'd ask me or my sister to run downstairs to get a bottle of ketchup or some flour or whatever. Maybe Jake's the weird one for not having basement ketchup...
  5. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

That would have been my first choice. I was at the concert in Milwaukee the day they shot that album cover, and out of nowhere, Tweedy just starts talking about camels...and insisting on calling them dromedaries. I was super confused at the time. It only made sense months later when the album came out. I still wonder how they got a camel into that German restaurant in the Third Ward.
  6. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

I didn't know what to write on my emblem, since the word choices were so limited. I just ended up going with 2/3 of the name of one of my favorite albums.
  7. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

Well I'll be turning miiverse posts off forever.
  8. Idle Thumbs 227: Quiet The Clown

On the topic of helicopter tunes: the Curb Your Enthusiasm theme might be the best custom soundtrack idea, but I think I'm using the best in game option. When I found the tape for "The Final Countdown," I knew that I could never change it to anything else. As a bonus, it's basically an unofficial TV theme.
  9. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

The exact same thing happened to me. I thought "Oh, it's tricky to get to an LZ? I'll just do the hot zone extraction thing that works on every other mission." Had it just kicked me back to the last part of the mission I wouldn't have cared, but having to start from scratch, particularly because I had a perfect run through the base the first time, just wrecked my enthusiasm for the game for a while. Which is weird. I seem to enjoy almost every part of the game for a while, and then hit a mission which is just about my least favorite thing. Then I get past it and return to it being my favorite game of the year so far. Then another really stupid thing happens.
  10. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

I'm super jealous of your efficiency. I was mostly doing A/B for the first few missions, then I got my first S rank on episode 4 (I think that's the one): After getting the S, I had an inflated sense of my own abilities, which was pretty quickly put in check by missions 8 & 9. I ended up getting a D on both. Now I feel like the worst mercenary soldier.
  11. Screenshots. Shots of your screen.

Some MGS V shots: Floating puppies are the best puppies. I need to photoshop this so he's popping out of a cake.
  12. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

What kind of CPU do you have? There were some AMD processors that had some kind of compatibility issue with the game (that I think they might have just patched?).
  13. HOTS... no the other HOTS. The Lords Management one damn it!

I played some HotS against real people for the first time tonight. It was pretty great! My first game was a little messy, but my Kills/Deaths was about even, and my team came out on top after being down for the first 15 minutes or so. The second game was even better. I only died once, and I got a whole bunch of kills. I was credit to team . I was surprised how nobody was saying awful things, or really much of anything. Team chat was mostly used to say, "I need help at mid" or whatever. So far, I've been playing E.T.C. a bit as he's a clone of the one hero I know how to play in League. Any other suggestions of fun but not too tricky to figure out heroes to mess with?
  14. Other podcasts

I'd be curious to hear if there are tensions between Gimlet hosts since PJ and Alex seem to be under pressure to put out an episode of Reply All pretty much every week (which probably does result in some of the weaker episodes) while Mystery Show runs pretty infrequently (probably because of the research and travel that goes into some of the episodes). And yes, I love Yes, Yes, No also. Hearing Alex Bloomberg talk about internet stuff makes me feel like I'm at least moderately in touch with things happening in the digital world.
  15. Other podcasts

I just feel like shilling a podcast I like. This week's Reply All is something special. The hosts realize that they've wasted the summer working for a podcasting company and go on a series of adventures in New York, including but not limited to, breaking into an abandoned building, bribing a harbormaster, and taking a carriage ride in the park together. It's pretty great. In a note that only applies to me, I also think it's a great model for teaching audio essays if you're into that kind of thing.
  16. Life

I'm in a similar situation in terms of nearing the end of a PhD program and staring down a grim academic job market. I think the scariest thing for me is watching the smartest people I've ever met, people who are far more talented and motivated than me with great teaching evaluations and publication records, go on the market and get absolutely nothing. It really has me considering the alternatives, like some of the educational technology positions I see posted at my university. If you have any interest in that kind of stuff I can post the next one that comes up on here (I'm a year and a half or so away from applying for one of them myself).
  17. Well, Sean's tweet said something along the lines of "we'll be announcing the release date soon," which was immediately followed by a tweet from Jake saying "soon is a relative term."
  18. Life

I'm teaching for the first time in two years today. It feels weird. I'm super excited for the class (Introduction to Pop Culture Studies!) but freaked out about the larger number of students and the fact that I made the syllabus up myself. I've taught enough in the past to know intellectually that I'm perfectly good at it, but being out of practice is getting to me. It's the first year of grad school imposter syndrome all over again. Blerg.
  19. Shadowrun Returns

Sounds good. So, there's no system in place where Kindly gets mad if you do a side mission before you go see her again, right? For some reason I have a fair amount of real-world anxiety about angering a fictional character.
  20. Recently completed video games

I think your reaction to the game can vary wildly based on your life experiences. Some of the early choices do seem a bit arbitrary, to the point of absurdity (can't you find a way to work your schedules so your wife can take art classes and spend time with your kid?). For most of the game, I was on the fence. I appreciated some parts of it while thinking others were poorly done. Once I got to the game's final choice, things just hit too close to home for me. Non-spoiler version: the game's ending had some stuff in it that made me reflect on my life and relationships. Even if there are some weak moments to the writing or some questionable design choices, I think it's worth a look.
  21. Shadowrun Returns

Here's a question for people playing Hong Kong. How does the mission structure work? Does the order you take runs matter? I wrapped up my first mission last night (the murder mystery) and returned to find a message from Kindly saying "come see me right away." I'm guessing that going to see her will advance the main story, so I can go ahead and finish the other three side missions I have available first. Then again, I could also see there being consequences for not coming when Kindly says so. My completionist tendencies are conflicting with what my character would do in the moment. Help!
  22. Cradle: Gone Home but with androids instead of ghosts

How can you skip them? I just got to the Endless Sands thing and am seemingly incapable of collecting the appropriate number of blue blocks. The game has been really cool so far, but I really don't want to play that mini-game again.
  23. That's awesome. I've really enjoyed Quick Looks with the three of them together, and if this could help me to actually learn CK2, all the better.
  24. Damn it, but computers have become really complicated

So I swapped the motherboard and CPU out. When I powered my system back on, I needed to connect to the motherboard's HDMI slot rather than my GPU's to get anything to display. Surprisingly, things from there went really smooth. It sat there on a "Windows is updating" screen for a while, but after maybe 15 minutes, it booted up and things seem to be running normally. I just need to install some drivers. Otherwise, things are looking good. EDIT: This driver CD from Asrock is trying to get my to install a Google Toolbar. What is this, 2002?
