I've played through the first 8 puzzles or so, and I really like it so far. More than anything I'm going to be disappointed when it's over, which might be pretty soon. Now if we can get Hitman Go, Republique, and Hearthstone, my iOS envy will be almost gone.

I played through Super Mario 3D World, at least up until the credits (I realize there are like 5 more worlds after that, but I'm choosing to count it since I'm bad at finishing games lately). It is a seriously charming game, and one of the few things I've played recently that just had me smiling through nearly the whole thing. The level design was clever throughout, it often introduced novel mechanics for one stage which prevented them from getting stale, and the side things like the Captain Toad levels just made it all the better. One of the main complaints I heard about the game was that it was too easy, and I can sort of see where people are coming from. I didn't think that was the case though. It was nice to play a game that had a relatively low level of challenge with the trickier bits being reserved for finding hidden stars. Maybe this is just because I've mostly been playing games like Dark Souls too much lately, but having something relaxing to do in a game was a good change of pace. I'm glad I played it, I will go back and finish those other levels, and I don't yet regret buying a Wii U.

I've been trying not to back too many things on Kickstarter since there are still a few things I backed that are a ways out (Frog Fractions 2, Massive Chalice). Still, this is making it pretty hard to resist. $14 is a pretty low commitment, and they already made a substantial proof of concept.

I didn't mean to doubt you, or to say that games are unattainable for all but the super-rich. Mostly I mean to chastise myself for being like "there is no excuse for not playing this game I love" when in fact there are a multitude of reasons someone couldn't/wouldn't want to.

I'm sure there are pricier hobbies. For me, it is the most expensive hobby I take part in (reading, running, and biking are how I spend my free time otherwise, and all of those things are free to cheap). But I made a sweeping generalization, and therefore should be punished. So, sorry about that.
-
Any hobby requires free time, but games do take more money than most. Also, more generally the ability to have hobbies is a luxury that many people struggling to feed a family, working for less than a living wage, or generally living in the global south don't have. Mostly just random privilege guilt.
-
I know you're mostly just making a joke, but stuff like this does make me really sad about how much free time/money/general privilege is required to play video games. I generally get excited about stuff and want people to play it and also be excited about it, but then I get reminded about all the other more important things people have going on and I feel really bad about myself.

I would totally be up for playing this with some thumbs. Also, would this fit better in the Games forum/Multiplayer Networking?

I swear I'll shut up about this game one day, but The Humble Store has Kentucky Route Zero for 50% off right now. You should play it. Why aren't you playing it already?

There's also an Unfinished video of it up on Giant Bomb.

I can see where you're coming from with finding the weirdness of the episode off-putting, but I think, for me at least, the weirdness is starting to take a more coherent form. I'll try to explain with what will probably just be a giant rambling paragraph, but here goes nothing:

I think that would work for what you're looking for. I built a PC for less than $1000 a year ago and I'm still running pretty much everything on high settings with solid frame rates. If anything, I'd say you might not need the SSD. Otherwise, the rest of the parts look pretty good.

Cine, I'm curious, what was the one visually ambitious moment you were particularly struck by? I was impressed by a few scenes, but there isn't one in particular that blew me away (IGN.com). EDIT: Just so I don't post too many times in a row, I wanted to add that these articles are both pretty great. I shamelessly stole them from a reader on this RPS story. Anyway, they help break down some of the references the game makes and many thematic elements. They also help to review what happened in the first two acts.
-
There is a single player mode, but it is mostly a series of challenges. If that's all you'd be getting it for, I wouldn't recommend it, but if you might get a multiplayer match together at some point, it can be a lot of fun.

Reactions to the episode without spoilers: I think it was a really strong episode, and it really showed the growing ambitions of the project. It was a long time coming, but I think it is paying off with really interesting environment designs, new perspectives visually (like the medium close-ups early on), and a thematic layer that is really starting to solidify.

Humble Store is having a spring sale. Notable deals include Walking Dead seasons 1 & 2, Kerbal Space Program, Nidhogg, Shadowrun Returns & DLC, and Towerfall.

I'm not sure how many baseball fans are on here, but I was wondering if anyone had used the MLB.tv subscription service. I'm a Brewers fan, and now that they are having a halfway decent season, I want to watch some games. Unfortunately, they never air where I live. Is the service worth the money? Does it go on sale at all? I sort of wish there was a lower tier of the service that let you just watch one team's games rather than everything.

My wife and I have been playing Mario Kart together since we met, so with Mario Kart 8 coming out, I just ordered a Wii U. I also picked up a copy of Mario 3D World, and I'll probably get Wind Waker HD with the free game promotion thing they're doing with Mario Kart. Besides those games, what have you been enjoying on your Wii U? What's worth checking out? Have I made a huge mistake? EDIT: I suppose I could read the thread, but it is 28 pages long, and I figure people may have changed their minds about some of the games they played in the past.

I read that before I started, so I don't really hold any of the lower production values against it. Mostly it made me interested to see where they went from there.

I played through The Shivah to take a break from too much Dark Souls 2. I had never played a Wadjet Eye game before, so I wasn't sure what I was getting into (my previous adventure game experience has been limited to some Lucasarts and Telltale games). Overall, I think it was a really well-made game that suffered from a few flaws of execution. I loved the concept and the tone, and I think the writing was mostly on point, though there were a few points where it seemed like it crossed the line from adopting a noir sensibility into just repeating the kind of cliches that proper noir texts tend to avoid. I particularly cringed at a couple lines, including "you really think you can get away with this?" and "how you holding up?" which might just be because I've heard the Thumbs talk about how that particular line is terrible. Still, I think it is a totally unique idea for a game, and one that makes me want to see more of what Wadjet Eye does. I picked up a copy of Gemini Rue, and will probably give that a try soon.
