Anyone here read Fuan no Tane? Good series of short burst Japanese Horror/Weird stories; think along the lines of Junji Ito but not as Lovecraftian or grotesque. Did a little write up in it: http://the9thblog.blogspot.com/2013/12/some-rambling-thoughts-on-fuan-no-tane.html?m=1

My ex did the same thing except she moved to character designs and making comics. She would also complain about the exact same things you and Super wrote.

When my ex was part of a mass visit to Sac State the tour guide said, " That beginning female college students had a 50% or so chance of getting raped," she was fucking gobsmacked when she heard this....My friend Josh, during his big orientation was asked to look to people to his left and right and the guide said, "Chances are one of them will rape someone." Fucking bloody hell.

There are some many things that piss me off about that cover: 1. The shit anatomy 2. The shit response from Manara 3. That Marvel, in response to trying to have more positive female characters, pulls this shit. 4. That Marvel got motherfucking Milo Marana, the great erotic artist, to do a cover for something they're trying to do for #3 5. That Manara did a TERRIBLE fucking cover! I expect more from the man! He's a brilliant draftsman--though his women look the same and have almond eyes--and he knows how to fucking draw. Jesus Christ, your head spins. If you're going to get a well known Euro Erotic artists, at least fucking go all out and use his talent. Also, MM is not wholly a erotic artist, he did some great collabs with the illustrious Hugo Pratt.

Idle Thumbs 173: Ridonkulous Rift

In of his earlier novels and short stories, yes. He got better as he went on but there were times where women in his novels were cardboard or background sprinkling. That pissed me off because I knew he was a bit better than that.As much as machismo is pervasive is in his novels, he also deconstructed it and explored it's ramifications on art, men, women and hiw it shaped Latin American politics. -

I would say that Bolaño's depiction of woman in his novels, especially when violence came upon them, is something most game developers should look at. He never let it succumb in gritty/darkness nonsense without any substance. He had a understanding of the violence that women, especially Latin women, faced during his time in Chile and various Latin American countries. Bolaño never short-changed them and always explored the ramifications, both personal and societal, of the violence that was put upon them.I remember this novella I was reading by him in which he took a whole chapter to explore the life this female poet. She was an absolute genius but was in a abusive relationship. Bolaño didn't hold any punches describing how much of an asshole her husband was but he never forgot about the poet. He wrote her with such care and precision and explored the aftermath of being in such a relationship for a long time. Though it's a harrowing and heart wrenching read, you never thought that Bolaño was exploiting her just to make his story darker and gritty, no; he had love for her and explored how such a genius poet could fall in such a situation. -
Pluto is his best work, hands down.He perfectly captures, expands and does a bloody great job perspective flipping a the story arc, "The Greatest Robot on Earth", while adding various things from the Astroboy's world. Urawasa re-interprets the arc as a murder mystery that he uses to explore themes like: Memory, what it is to be a human, can robots be like humans?, War and it's horrible aftereffects. What guilt and hatred does to an individual person and the present and future consciousnesses of a group of people, and music. Urawasa is also a big user of the Tezuka Star System and it worked wonderfully in Pluto.

Idle Thumbs 173: Ridonkulous Rift

You can type how much she's been attack, driven out of her house and other fucking heinous things that have/continue to happen to her, but it seems to go out one ear (or eye) and out the other. It seems those facts are lost on them and continue their drive to cherry pick shit critiques of her. -
FUCKING THIS! I bought the re-make the day it came out and jesus h christ! Which is weird because the HD remakes of MGS and ZOE are fabulous

Reading Bird Box and while the premise is grabbing me the book weakens when it flashes back to what life was like before the "creatures". For those who don't know: Malerman is great when he's describing Malorie and her children journey from the house; it's tense and at times nerve wracking. Sadly all atmosphere and tension falls apart when he moves to talk about her past life and the survivors she was with with. The survivors feel stilled and cliched and their problems just as much. They're not as fleshed out as Malorie; hell, even Malorie's sister was fleshed out better than the survivors and she was only there for a few chapters! But, I'm going to be a bit more forgiving of it since I'm only 60 pages in and the survivors came in not that long ago. I just hope Malerman is able to keep the moment he has when he's writing about the present to the past. Other than that, I'm re-reading Seiobo There Below by László Krasznahorkai and it continues to be one of my favorite modern books; Krasznahorkai is a modern literature master! Highly recommend it to y'all: http://www.amazon.com/Seiobo-There-Below-Ndp-1280/dp/0811219674

Big fan of the SH series, well, I should say, until four. SH3 is definitely the scariest of the bunch, 2 having a great story to it and 4 for being having such a tense and suffocating atmosphere that would wear you down as you played. Actually, I'd dare say SH 4 is the best of the bunch even with all its problems: great story matched with, again, a tense and suffocating atmosphere that made it a hard game to play at night. Though SH 4 will never reach the scariness factor of 3, it's almost up there with it.

Idle Thumbs 171: The Curious Case of the Rhode Island Reader

On SH2 endings: SPOILERS Good: healing immediately or not allowing yourself to go yellow for too long with your health, staring at your wife's photo, reading her letter and not staying close to and not checking up on Maria. Delusional good ending: not read your wife's letter, not looking at your wife's photo, sticking close to Maria, checking up on Maria during the hospital level Suicide: low health throughout the game, staring at knife a lot throughout game Oh, the game nor booklet ever tell or hint about these interactions; you find them out by yourself. There are other endings but those are based in specific items and rooms. I've memorized all these little things because I've played the fuck out of SH 2 and even knowing all these things, can't get tired of them. -
