  2. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Jesus Christ, that fucking Grantlabd article, ugh. One of the worst and cruel things I've read; no respect for the subject's privacy. I refuse to call that writer a journalist or that a journalistic piece for truth; what a crock of shit. Some people will never understand why most stay cover, I did and still do to an extent because of the amount of abuse that can get thrown at you; it can simply overwhelm you and go into deep hiding which hurts and fucks with you even more. I wouldn't want that in anyone!

Borges was like that to an extent: more attacking the "Aryan" ethnicity and the rampant anti-Semitism that was running amok--an still is to an extent--in Argentina. Borges too wished he was of Jewish decent and praised the Jews and attacked the Nazis.

Long, but great article that explores how social media and the internet in general attack and harass women. http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2014/10/the-unsafety-net-how-social-media-turned-against-women/381261/?single_page=true

  11. Idle Thumbs 179: Shadow of Something

A few things: -I have such a weird relationship with LOTRs: having been in the Black Metal, Industrial and Neo-folk scene for so long, whenever I hear LOTRs, I correlate it to American and European--Central and Eastern too--white supremacists and fascists singing about their pagan/heathen roots and fighting against modern Western values; it's weird, those books have been spoiled for me. LOTR is a huge hit within those scenes, especially within the Black/Folk Metal and Neo-folk scene. Varg Vikerness--Burzum--wrote a lot about LOTR and his relationship to it and how he identified with the Orks--his stage name was Grishnackh--and how it all relates to paganism and nazism. During his 21 years in prison and afterwards, he's dropped LOTR and Nazi beliefs. - I completely agree with everyone about the length of Alien. Any game or anything dealing with atmosphere, tension, and fear should not let it linger for too long or keep showing the monster. This is why I read more Horror than watch or play, because most authors I read know this and they've mastered this. I'm not talking about Stephen King and the like--though they can be good-but authors like Poe, Blackwood, Langan, Baird, Vandermeer, Ballingrud, and others. A lot of these authors work in the short story or novella framework: that framework allows them the freedom to build a setting, plots, characters, atmosphere, tone and fear without letting it go for too long. I think, that the short story and novella are perfect vehicles for hitting all the points of a successful Horror story without dragging it. Let me give you of am example of a game that did this well: Among the Sleep. Arts is great at building characters, tone and atmosphere and allowing their monster to be in the background. Hell, I was more than an hour into the game before I even saw the monster and it was only for a few seconds; it scared the shit out of me and made monster more terrifying. Now that they've finally introduced the monster, they're smart not to keep showing it, and when it does show up, your vision becomes blurry and it's hard to actually see it; its distorted and always at the edge of your vision. This is something I think about a lot because I'm a big reader of and writing about horror and weird fiction.

  16. The Vanishing of Ethan Carter

I completely agree. I found it to be a filler or an unneeded antagonist to spice the game because they thought people might be bored.

Maybe. I didn't feel it was needlessly nihilistic because it matched the environment the character were in. I was able to accept that nihilism because Michôd was able to build the world and the characters in which such a way that that state of mind is the only way you're going to survive in the world; I think Michôd earned that level of nihilism in his film. Also, Pearce's performance was electrifying; it reminded me a bit of Barry Newman's performance on Vanishing Point, and Gene Hackman's performance on The Conversation: these three men dealing with a terrible existential crisis, but it's all inside and we can never know the full truth of it; they use their entire bodies to show it, but they never overdo it; they're walking a very thin line between gaining control and completely losing it. This character study--and this is a great character study movie than plot or an arc--was brought alive by Pearce. When you see Pearce and the anguish and anger he has inside, it's devastating to watch him try to keep it inside; he's like a boiling pot that you don't want to get close to because you never know when it's going to explode and hurt everyone around him. This back-and-forth comes to a point when Another thing that grabbed me about The Rover was how elemental, bare-bones the plot was: Guy get's his car stolen, he needs to get it back; I love very elemental films like that. I think because it allows more focus on the characters and it gives Michôd and us more space to explore the characters and their world. There's a shit-ton more I love about this film, but those are the few that stood out for me. The Drop was fantastic! I have a feeling that Roskam is only going to get better as he progresses with his career. I remember watching Bullhead and having it knock me on my ass: the beautiful cinematography, the on-the-edge physical performance of Matthias Schoenaerts in which you never know when he's going to lose it, the juxtaposing between the steroid driven industrial cattle farm with the lush Belgium landscape, and the feeling of being trapped and no matter what you do, you're fucked and you're going to fail.

  20. The Vanishing of Ethan Carter

Just finished it last night and I really enjoyed it. What was a pain in the ass though, was having to backtrack if you missed a puzzle or story. I had to re-do the portal house because at the time I didn't know what the fuck to do.
